Sherman's memoirs are among the most stomach turning reading material one can find. He enjoyed the slaughter, probably pent up frustration at his prior losses, but his wife was *sexually aroused* by the thought of a full Southern genocide, down to the last child.

Then comes Sherman. Despite what you're taught in school, he had nothing to do with the South surrendering. His only contribution was taking Atlanta, which may be all that saved Lincoln's 1864 bid. Prior to that, he was an abject failure who nearly cost Grant the West.

...to the point of regretting military moves he made because of how many men died on both sides. The general tenor of the soldiers fighting was reconciliation and camaraderie. Punitive measures were, for the most part, imposed by civilians who knew nothing of bloodshed.

Lincoln was told reinforcing a fort promised to SC would start a war. It's what he wanted, to the point of having ships with invasion orders already in transit before the first shot was fired. Fearing being conquered and all that comes with that, the CSA raised an army.
