3,571 people followed me in 48 hours to see if I can turn a $20k investment into a $500k+ sale in 1 year. I might regret this, but let's do it. I'll be as transparent as possible every step of the way. You can follow the journey or build with me in 2 ways:

I’m convinced that with $20k, I can build a website that sells for $500,000+ in one year. Is this a challenge I should take and show everything along the way? Higher stakes: I only get to work on it two hours a day.

So are we all just hitting dismiss on Google Analytics’ constant reminders that we will be forced to use GA4, hoping it’ll just go away forever?

15 days ago, I decided to post to Twitter every day for 30 days just to see what would happen. On day 8, I didn't have much to say. So I posted a hypothetical challenge: can I build and sell a site for $500k in 1 year with a $20k investment? Today I launched that site. Wtf.

A lot of people ask me for help deciding on a niche for their site. I always tell them their primary passion is the best answer. But I like data too. So look at what's already proven outside of a website. 1. Every sizable sub-Reddit is a $10k+/mo website. 2. be continued:

$20k -> $500k in 1 Year Challenge: it’s over. By mathematical definition, I failed. But hitting $7500/mo in revenue with 85,000 newsletter subscribers, while working very part time on it, isn’t so bad. The entire formula is in place, so if I put another $20k in, a $500k

Take $100 and test email lead gen ads across 20 topics on Fb ($5 each). Take the one with the lowest cost per lead and create the best newsletter you’ve ever seen on that topic. Spend $1000 more on that winning ad campaign. You now have a business.

Steal ideas from parallel websites. What's your site's topic? Make a list of topics that have all the same traits but are not actual competition. Then go to all those sites and steal the concepts of their best articles. Simple examples:

In 2005, I noticed a site using Yahoo Publisher Network (they tried to compete with Adsense). I reached out to the owner and learned he was making $500/day. So I applied and went from $9k/mo to $30k/mo. It changed my life. You have to be curious - and also talk to people.

Every single thing about your business can be improved. Down to the word, down to the pixel. Every single thing. Focus on making a single 1% improvement every day rather than searching aimlessly for that 100% jump. Best part? You’ll find the latter by doing the former.

None of my successful sites, at their peak, were delivering the same type of content as they were on day one. If you’re not fluidly adapting with your audience’s feedback, you won’t grow. Start creating now so you can find what sticks. You won’t find it in the planning stage.

Digital marketing tools can be helpful but they're all so game-ified. I don't need a score out of 100 or a colored meter graphic to tell me if my content is good, and neither should you. Use tools but don't get lost in them. If you're creating great content, you'll know.

@NicheDown Lots of riches in boring (and physically dirty) businesses. You know what’s sexier than a “cool” job? A lot of money.

I launched @ViralNova exactly 2 years ago today. Who would've thought a random Wordpress theme and a spare bedroom would lead to this?

I'm being encouraged to write an e-book on building and selling a business with no staff and minimal investment. Considering it.

"Email is dead" is my favorite example of why you should zig when the industry zags. I quietly built a 750k subscriber list that profited $100k/mo while the hivemind insisted nobody would be using email. Now, of course, email is all the rage. But there's more...

Reached 1m fans on FB. Post reach was promptly cut in half. Running a business on FB is like opening a McDonald's on an active volcano.

Q: How much wine have you had? A: 4 glasses. Q: How did you get Likes so cheap? A: I wrote great, Like-able copy. Read my latest email. Q: Are you doing all of this to sell a course? A: No. Don't ever buy a course. Everything is freely available.

Facebook is for traffic, Twitter is for networking, Instagram is for branding, Snapchat is stupid.

On page 334 of @MJDeMarco 's new book, Unscripted, I have a quote. This kinda makes me an author... except not at all.

The site is pretty much done. Some small things left but looks pretty good. A few quick tips when you build your own: - actually read the WP theme guide - use a triadic color wheel and stick with a combo - tighten up your header, use minimalist logo - open sans or arial font
