America First was used to support the explicitly eugenicist anti-immigration bills of the early 1920s, designed to keep people of "lower stock" out of America and protect its supposed "Anglo-Saxon" identity. This speech from 1923 by no coincidence includes "the negro problem."

The phrase America First was popularized in 1915, when Woodrow Wilson used it in a speech to the nativist DAR, urging that Americans subject "hyphenate" Americans (German-American, Italian-American, Irish-American) to loyalty tests.

In 1938, Professor Harold Luccock at Yale said: “When and if fascism comes to America it will not be labeled ‘made in Germany’; it will not be marked with a swastika; it will not even be called fascism; it will be called, of course, ‘Americanism.’” This, too, circulated widely.

This aged well: on 10 Nov 2016, two days after the election, I said Putin would run rings around Trump, and that Trump's weakness before Putin was not unrelated to the rise of ethno-nationalism both at home and abroad. I was scoffed at, of course.

She did this years before she knew Frank. For the record. Marilyn was always an ally, and outspoken about it. Also outspokenly in defense of gay love, in 1962. And let’s not forget her defiance of McCarthy in 1956, which Frank never did. Credit Marilyn for Marilyn, not Frank.
