If you're interested in listening to a highly-tactical podcast on delegation, making use of Virtual Assistants, and other ways to manage your time, I think you're going to like this one 🙂
NEW podcast episode is up!
Sam Corcos (
@SamCorcos
), Co-Founder of Levels (
@levels
) — The Ultimate Guide to Virtual Assistants, 10x Delegation, and Winning Freedom by Letting Go (Plus: Creating Leverage with Tools, Systems, and Processes)
Please enjoy! 🙌
I have no respect for companies that let you sign up for a subscription digitally, then require a phone call to cancel.
This is a shameful dark pattern.
I'm in the middle of writing an article on how we've made use of our investor network, and I discovered that our team has had meaningful interactions with 94 people on the
@a16z
team 🤯
VC with services model = 👌
If you want an inside look into how I manage my time ⏰ and what’s it’s like to be a startup CEO, you should check out this piece I wrote over at
@firstround
✍️
New on the Review:
@SamCorcos
is maniacal about tracking his time as a startup founder & CEO. He shares how he *actually* spent the first 2 years building
@levels
for a rare in-depth (and un-glamorized) analysis of a founder in the trenches.
📰:
👏 Super proud to share that
@levels
Co-founder
@CaseyMeansMD
and her brother
@calleymeans
sat down with Joe Rogan to discuss the importance of metabolic health. Amazing to see their impact bringing this pressing issue into the national conversation! 📣
I was talking with
@david_perell
and we think the term "homeschooling" needs a rebrand.
There are too many negative connotations with the term... but the core values of self-paced, part-virtual education are clearly the future. h/t
@nealstephenson
Any ideas? 👇
Now that
@Levels
is at 50+ employees, we're running into new organizational challenges, including performance management, focus, and cross-functional team dynamics.
Since we're remote-first at
@Levels
, we decided to run an experiment where we gave a content creator full creative control to interview our team in order to uncover our company culture. Here are the results 👇
I just heard a great
@paulg
quote on a podcast with
@brian_armstrong
and
@tferriss
:
“Action produces information.”
When you’re pre-product-market-fit, you just have to keep trying things.
We hear this a lot 😊 Which is why, starting in May, we’re going to begin publishing all our investor updates and recordings of our team all-hands that are 12+ months old to give folks more visibility into internals of early stage company building. 🎉
Standby for more details...
"Ideas are cheap and execution is hard, so we are not afraid to share our company strategy and do not spend time worrying about competition."
@DrCaseysKitchen
on the transparency principle behind
@Levels
growth.
More startups should be this transparent.
At
@Levels
, our aim is to solve the metabolic health crisis—but we’re also building a remote-first, async company.
This means our calendars are largely open for deep work.
Here’s more about how we do (or don’t do) meetings at Levels 👇
Hey I just moved back to San Francisco (in Noe Valley) and I’m looking for a weightlifting buddy. If you’re in the Noe Valley area and want to get into it, send me a DM :)
It almost goes without saying at this point, but every remote team should be using
@loom
Looking through my history, I record ~5 looms per day to share context with the team.
It's a huge enabler of how we do meetings at
@Levels
We get asked all the time how we manage knowledge internally at
@Levels
, so we recorded a
@loom
on how we use
@notion
to keep everyone on the same page 📑
We've come a long way in the last year
@Levels
! 🎉
Here's a short snippet from our latest internal team all hands looking back over the last 12 months 🎬
Time to start leveling up my sleep 🕺 Excited to see what thermoregulation does to my sleep quality. I'm *very* sensitive to temperature when I'm sleeping — anything over 72 degrees and I'm going to have a rough night.
@eightsleep
@m_franceschetti
@a_zatarain
My numbers have been so good this week that I was starting to worry my sensor might be broken... So I had 3 oranges as an experiment. Oy! Turns out, it's definitely not broken 😆 Won't be doing that again anytime soon
@m_franceschetti
@unlocklevels
For those of you looking to supercharge how you delegate, I wrote a tactical piece in First Round Review that goes into detail on how we work with EAs (Executive Assistants) at Levels 🎉
If you're looking for an agency to work with, I recommend
@athenago
. They're great.
New on the Review:
By optimizing how he teams up with executive assistants,
@levels
CEO
@samcorcos
is able to delegate 400 tasks a month🤯
He shares his ultra-tactical advice for other founders on working with EAs & becoming a much stronger delegator.
I’m excited to announce that Sonja Manning will be joining
@Levels
as our first Chief of Staff! 🎉
She’ll be working with
@DrCaseysKitchen
, and she joins us from
@deloitte
. We are happy to have you on our team! Welcome, Sonja! :)
For those interested in how we operate
@Levels
,
@mariogabriele
did a deep-dive ✍️ into our company docs and spoke to most of our leadership team to surface the culture we're building to solve the metabolic health crisis.
Thanks for the writeup, Mario :) 🎉
.
@Levels
has the most distinct culture of any company I've analyzed.
• All remote
• Async by default
• Virtually no meetings
• Shares almost everything publicly
It's working. They're executing at a speed that investors say they've never seen.
Happy to announce Dan Summers has joined
@levels
as Technical Operations Manager. Dan comes to us from
@spacex
where he spent seven years as Lead Engineer and Manager on the Raptor Rocket Engine Development. Welcome to the team, Dan!
We ran an internal experiment
@Levels
to start to quantify the effect of a walk on glucose response 🧪
The results are interesting, and I'm excited for the future research that can be done as access to more biological data becomes available.
At
@Levels
, our members are the owners of their personal information and health data, not us.
We want to raise the bar for tech for clarity surrounding privacy policies. Our new policy has easier-to-read, non-legal language to help with clarity.
Let me know what you think👇
Well, I tried going on a 2 hour walk🚶♂️(listening to an audiobook) before having pizza 🍕 to see if it helped with the response. Looks like pizza is still off limits... I'll try going on a walk after next time to see if the response is different.
I have to say, the battery life on the new 💻 M1 MacBook is disorienting (in a good way) 😆 I just got a "low battery" warning at 10% battery remaining, with an estimate that I still have 2 hours of juice left... which is about how long a full battery lasted on my last computer.
Really interesting piece on breathwork and metabolic health 🧘♂️
I haven't made a regular practice of it myself... but I'm open to it. Anyone tried it? What do you think?
@robbiebent1
@m_franceschetti
@Austen
We put together some video onboarding material for new hires to help people acclimate to our way of working
@Levels
Using
@NotionHQ

@loom
for onboarding content is powerful 💪
I’m thinking about making a Latam engineering recruiting trip in December ✈️ Maybe Brazil? Colombia? Argentina? Anyone have recommendations on how I can meet lots of great engineers down there?

@Jeff_Jordan
and I are excited to announce that
@a16z
is leading
@Levels
$12M Seed Round to bring biowearables into the mainstream and improve metabolic health.
At a startup, you have to approach every headcount doubling as if you're working at a new company. Comms, decision-making, processes, & goal-setting often break at each phase and they need to be re-thought from the ground up in order to scale
BREAKING NEWS
We are proud to announce that
@eightsleep
has raised a $86M Series C.
Sleep hasn't changed for 1000s of years, until the Pod. This funding will unlock development of cutting-edge tech that tracks more bio signals & maximizes recovery & rest
I had a great chat with
@vhmth
from
@loom
talking about communication and the use of video at remote, async teams.
Fun fact:
@vhmth
was my roommate when I lived in SF 😆
Interesting. I went on a 30 minute walk before a mango and my response was way better. Mangos usually scores a 3.
@DrCaseysKitchen
is that expected?
@m_franceschetti
These 10 principles of effective decision-making at
@Levels
help us make good decisions organization-wide.
We don’t take these lightly. 👇

Thanks for the shoutout
@RobertLustigMD
:) Your books are required reading at
@Levels
.
I was first made aware of the metabolic health crisis by your books and the work of
@garytaubes
and
@PeterAttiaMD
. And for that, I'll be forever grateful 🙏
“My prediction to you is that within five years, we're going to be talking about metabolic health in the same way that we currently talk about the opioid crisis,” says

Health.
@Forbes
Books I read in June 📚
If you're into science fiction, I highly recommend Project Hail Mary by
@andyweirauthor
. It's the best work of science fiction I've read since The Three Body Problem.
I'm excited to announce that Stephen Bush has joined our team
@Levels
as a Software Engineer!
Stephen spent the past few years working at Plaid and Airbnb and we're happy to have you on the team 🎉 Welcome, Stephen!
Books I read in July 📚
I re-read High Growth Handbook by
@eladgil
this month, which I highly recommend to every entrepreneur.
@dhh
's book was though provoking — though I think we might have a few philosophical disagreements 😉
I decided to give
@nuPastaCanada
a try, which is a low calorie / low carb pasta 🍝 Pasta has historically been a disaster for me... so I was surprised to see that it scored a 10 on
@Levels
🎉 Might be worth a shot if you want your pasta fix.
We're now using
@loom
for all of our pull requests, which has been awesome! But...
It doesn't look like there's a native integration
@github
(it only works with the Chrome extension)
@github
@loom
any chance that's on the roadmap? That'd be super helpful.
New on the Review:
To raise brand awareness, plenty turn to podcast ads to spread the word. But

As a remote-first company, onboarding plays a huge role in how we operate
@levels
.
@bgrynol

@miz
recorded a video walking through our documentation and the processes we have in place for new hires. Feel free to watch the video 👉
I'm excited to announce Caitlin Shure (
@shuroscience
) joined our team
@Levels
as Senior Editor.
Her background as a freelance science writer focusing on wearables and neurotech is an amazing fit; we're thrilled to have her on the team. Welcome, Caitlin 🙌
We're creating a series of "how to" videos for the team internally at
@Levels
on how we operate as a remote company, and I think they might be useful for other startups as well.
If you want to help decide what we make, could you fill out this <1m survey?
Our Head of Design,
@alanmclean
just put together an awesome video on how we think about judgment and scoring
@Levels

This is an important concept for any product focused on behavior change.
@Austen
I think a better choice is to let early employees sell enough secondary to allow them to early exercise :) That's what we're planning to do through CartaX
@cartainc
I did a podcast on this with
@henrysward
recently, which should be out soon.
Folks have asked me what our customer success team tracks
@Levels
, so I'm sharing the recording of our most recent Ops Metrics Monthly Deck for visibility 📺

I had a call with Jackie from our growth team last week to go over some quick wins for how to maximize productivity on a Mac 💻 Sharing the call recording here for those interested in that sort of thing:
I have a confession to make... Am I the only person who puts their
