If a client tells you they’re guilty but doesn’t plead so, I can’t mislead the court. So, I could test the prosecution’s case, but not suggest the client is innocent

His job was to provide representation whenever instructed. Further, barristers are subject to a rule whereby they can’t refuse a brief because they disagree with it.
