Freelance workers need to cover their own income taxes, holiday costs, sick pay, and ma/paternity leave, on top of other business-related expenses (e.g., insurance, office staples, ...). That means rates cannot be lower than or similar to the hourly wage of a conventional salary.

You don’t have to accept every single #xl8 job that you're offered: saying no is respecting yourself and the work. One of the best decisions I've made is to stop translating outside the field I specialise in. This has allowed me to spend more time doing work I actually enjoy.

Lowering translation fees for repetitions and for 100% matches - does it make sense? To me, the answer is no because I will still need to read and revise the repetitions and matches as I translate (within my CAT-tool and outside, after saving a clean file with the translation).

Si no se avanza con la regulación, el uso de la IA en traducción se va a extender. Las editoriales, por lo general justas de plata, van a poseditar (y barato), si es que ya algunas no lo hacen. Y será el comienzo del fin de "lo literario". Adiós a la singularidad humana.

Translation is never neutral, particularly in some subject matters; whenever I translate about migration I purposefully choose certain words (among many others that would also be correct from a linguistic point of view). E.g., migrant person vs. migrant. We need to be conscious.

This translator's translation strategy (en>es) was to ask their 2-year-old nephew to reproduce the name of animals (periwinkles, whelks, and mussels) in 'toddler's speech'. The result is just wonderful. Kudos to them! #xl8

Voy a romper una lanza a favor de la máquina y a decir que esto es lo que pasa cuando no se entiende que la traducción automática es una herramienta de los traductores y se utiliza con frivolidad. Saber usar la traducción automática y postedición es una competencia profesional.

Something that never ceases to amaze me: some clients will spend weeks doing the 'last' edits of huge reports (hundreds of pages done by multiple people) but, for some reason, they expect 1 translator alone to implement such edits in a couple of days. Just like that, magically.

On average, a translator does not provide simple translation services. We also can (and will!) flag areas of improvement in source texts (e.g., mistakes in manual type-setting, readability issues, confusing/inconsistent terminology, broken links, etc.). #LoveYourTranslator
