Once we landed, the other doctor was recognized and given a thank you gift and I wasn’t despite being the one that made medical decisions, and losing 4+ hrs of sleep (overnight flight). This is what being a female in medicine looks like.

On my flight back home to see family briefly after working such a hard trauma call shift, @AmericanAir asked for a doctor or nurse on board. I stood up after <1 min of nobody else standing up, flight attendant assumed I was a nurse. Few minutes later after stabilizing the patron

A guy sitting directly behind the patron said he also was a doctor (PMR) and could help. He asked what kind of doctor I was and I told him emergency medicine.

To make sure she was safe, I ended up sitting with the patron for the rest of the flight (she was anxious over what happened). The seat was covered in vomit and I had no problem cleaning it myself

As a first-gen in medicine, it breaks my heart that my dad can't have the honor to hood me during my med school graduation. My success is very much his and I know how much this would mean to him. I'm not sure what kind of message it sends that this honor only goes to doctorates.

I went to visit my grandpa for 2 days on a rotation since I haven’t been able to see him after his stroke 2 years ago, and in retaliation, the surgical specialty is trying to give me 2 weeks of credit instead of the 4 I’m working. I’m tired y’all.

My car was broken into yesterday & 4 mos worth of clothing stolen. When I called my dad to walk through what happened, he ended our call with: “My mom always said a man who steals is a man who’s more in need. You’re here to help people. Take this as you’ve helped someone today”

I have a meeting with the Dean of my school to address the hooding ceremony. I hope this becomes a step in the right direction for all my DEI friends. Graduation is a day to celebrate with loved ones, and exclusion is not the way to do it. Hopefully outdated traditions go 🙏🏼

Wow, over a month in rotations of 3rd year and every time I get asked what I want to do and respond with emergency medicine, I get a lot of sh*t for it… job market, “triage docs”, “referral docs”, not real medicine… I could use some inspiration from the best field out there

@stringfellow_md Being on a rotation where I followed the residents + attending as they got themselves lunch (resident offered to pay for attendings meal, not mine), and having to sit on the table as they ate — I can’t wait to be as considerate as you were in the above tweet. 💕🥺

Research your programs before ranking! Make sure you're supported as a human. This program reminded me of a surgical intern who quit residency after consistently being ridiculed for pumping breastmilk during her lunch breaks in the locker room😢: 👏Kuddos to the program below!

What I’ll never get behind is when one Med student bashes another. It really breaks my heart to see how malignant the culture in medicine can be, and for what? Making fun of your classmates Step 1 journey is just awful 😕 I fear how that’ll translate onto patient care

Thank God I’m not a medical student anymore. Seeing people studying for step 1/2 is so triggering because the volume you have to know is so high. Whiplash thinking about how much you have to sacrifice to go through medical school.

So much respect for Gen Surg residents. One of the amazing PGY2’s that I work with said he often stays after his shifts for the chance to scrub into a case. They’re willing to put in overtime because of their passion. It’s not an easy field and I’m glad someone’s doing it.

Brb crying inside because the neurosurgery attending complimented me by saying I have the “demeanor for EM” but was actively trying to recruit me into neurosurgery because I was “the most helpful medical student ever” That’s just the #EMBound difference baby, we stay helpful🥹💕

Had dinner with my family. Sat down and we reviewed my finalized rank list. My mom loves my #1 program just as much as I do and drew out a bunch of hearts and wrote “InshAllah ya Rab” which translates to “if God wills, oh God”. Signed, sealed, delivered. #Match2023 #EMBound

I urge physicians and other healthcare workers to spend a little time getting familiar with non-profits, local, and federal organizations. Ask your colleagues, do some digging. It was the most useful I felt on this rotation, and the most meaningful way to end family medicine.

January 27, 2021 I found out I was selected to serve as Midwest Coordinator for @emresidents . Being part of the MSC has changed my career path for the better. It made being a minority in medicine less isolating. Thank you for 2 years 💙 My excitement will always remain the same.

@DocAlpinist I definitely see your perspective. If I were married maybe I’d be on board 😂. However me becoming a doctor is life changing to my parents and this would be ripping them out of the ability to watch their life’s hard work come into fruition. It’s symbolic to immigrant parents

Need to ultrasound the hand or foot? Using a water basin helps reveal better anatomy. Use the linear probe, submerged just a bit in the water. Doesn’t need to touch skin. No gel needed! #FOAMed

@fortybam @FlatPatty @AmericanAir You’re probably not familiar with the structure of medicine, but it starts when you declare yourself as a premed. Even as medical student, I would walk in and when asked what I’m going to school for and respond “medical school”.. usual reaction is “oh so nurse?”

I was able to direct her to these services because my family has used them in the past. I felt really fortunate to be at the right place in the right time. There are some things prescription medications cannot treat.

Really grateful this is the example I have as a parent. 4 months worth of clothing is replaceable and insurance will be a pain in the *** while I jump into my next sub-I, but life goes on. I’m grateful to be here and doing what I love to do, in a state that I absolutely love.

Have some sutures to do but the patient has lots of dried up blood? I’ve learned that rubbing lubricating jelly all over dry blood areas and then wiping it >1 min later helps makes this less painful for patients. You also help the team by cleaning them before discharge #FOAMed

Advice to #Match2024 , find the place that feels like home. I get to remember “why medicine” every single day I show up to work. I love my team, I look up to my seniors, and I’m inspired to show up the next day being a little bit better. Can’t believe I get to live this life.

Truth of the matter is an EM doc (+ the incredible team that works alongside the physicians) saved my dads life. I love the field, especially more so after having >5 years of personal experience. So no… I’m not naive and I have reasons for selecting it

Can’t believe it’s been nearly 1 year since match day. Find your circle of friends and check in on them gently Monday. SOAPing ≠ lack of accomplishment. Medicine is an oddball. It’s not you. Reach out early is the most important advice I have. #match2024

...as (future) physicians, doing something beyond our scope can be life changing to patients. I was able to connect her to government services and a handful of local non-profits that can provide the assistance she's looking for (eg, day care)...

I’m a black woman from rural KY. I’m a survivor of childhood #abuse and #trauma . I’ve lived in 10 different houses by the age of 16. I’ve worked 2-3 jobs since 16 until med school. But, I’m also a #firstgen college grad and a #firstgen med student. Trust, 2024 will run me my MD👩🏽‍⚕️
