2024 has been INSANE so far, and I need to brag about it... So let's start with pubs. My lab has put together 8 papers: 3 accepted on PR journals, 5 on
@biorxivpreprint
on their way. 5 on structural studies of ATTR fibrils (16 cryoEM structures!), 3 on diagnostic development 🔥
It’s official! In the middle of this crazy crisis, I’m starting my lab at the Center for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases at UTSW!! this June! So I’m officially looking for a postdoc 😊

I’m immensely proud and happy to share our first paper, an outstanding team effort of a junior lab, in the middle of a pandemic, and starting with limited

core course "writing and reading scientific papers"? I need ideas! The students will come up with improvements that we will share (if you are interested). Highly recommended!
Today is my 1year anniversary as a professor, so it is time for reflecting on my struggles and wins. I will start with the struggles (to finish on a high note).
Past month has been a roller coaster! The celebration of many preprints & pubs. Farewell party for 4 lab members who will move on to grow personally&professionally. 🟢 light to write thesis for my first GS

Hey friends & colleagues! My student
@_ahmed_yasmin
needs help! His little brother was recently diagnosed with a rare brain tumor that required emergency surgery. Her family had to stay in LA for surgery and rehab, & costs are insane. Please RT & donate 🙏
As a parent without a proper children care strategy, I second this. I feel that I’m underachieving at all fronts. I see colleagues that are thrilling at home or even at the office/lab already, working full time... it just can’t happen for me. I need 30h days...
Researchers who are keeping up with their productivity right now are NOT necessarily 'more skilled', 'more disciplined', or 'more motivated' than researchers who are struggling.
Often times, it comes down to differences in unearned privilege.

Will just say "Among the large number of highly meritorious applications, only ~18% were selected to move forward to the second/final stage of review. It is my pleasure to inform you that your New Innovator Award (DP2) application has been selected for the second stage of review"
Pretty fun to chair this session! Just a bit of a critique for the organization committee of

Well… I had a faculty dinner today that I wasn’t able to go to because an R01 submission and having kids at home are not compatible. But I already paid for the nanny. How low is to spend 2.5h inside your car at a chick fil’a parking lot scrolling your IG?
Now I’m following this routine of dropping off my girls at daycare at 9, come back home & work 7h straight, pick them up, & go to the park for a looong walk. At night, I’m exhausted. But I feel whole, collected, connected. I really like this new rhythm

Things that made my toddler cry this week:
- Her bed cover didn't stay "up" (in the air)
- I didn't sing a song that she had in her mind
- Wrong shoes, changed to the ones she screamed about, wrong too
- She wanted to go to school naked
- I came back from work & she got emotional

. She has been with us for a year in the BioLab
@FulbrightPrgrm
. Now we will miss her and her drama very much. Thank you for all those moments, Ania! It has been a great pleasure & I wish u the very best! Come back soon! 🥰❤️😭
Today, our youngest lab member and STAR student Sid finished his summer program with us with the promise of coming back! We had a great time with you kid! It was awesome to have u! & I see a brilliant future ahead of you!

Today I reviewed a paper & I couldn’t find a flaw. It was very well written & organized. The conclusions were solid. The experiments well designed. I accepted as it was. I didn’t even have constructive critiques! I feel like I have evolved to a better me. Congrats to the authors

During my PhD we used to party IN the lab (long ago, not so many restrictions), beers and chips mostly, paid by the PI (probably from his own pocket) and it was GREAT. I plan to do the same in my lab, although we will probably find a place outside instead of the actual lab...
My lab is the best! they got me lunch and a chai cause I was attending an orientation session for the admissions program and I did not have time to get me anything. This is one more reason to love them forever...

Grad Students: It’s Sunday. Your “friends” are going to tempt you with gardening, hiking, slow-cooking, etc. Keep your eye on your goals though. Keep your eye on the glory. Imagine yourself winning that book award. Imagine yourself serving as a mentor. Make choices accordingly.
1) Gathering a fantastic lab. I won’t ever get tired of emphasizing how great they are.
2) Taking care of my health (by keeping anxiety under control)
3) Listening to my brain, heart, and soul to finally divorce
Bonus) Doing all of this by myself while raising my wonderful 👯♀️
After a couple of weeks of sleep deprivation, and brain and browser burnout, I did it. With the support of my lab (thanks for your patience! and assistance!) and the special guest Cake, who witness the last minutes of the submission!

Nothing like being home. With jet lag and two jet lagged toddlers, and I slept almost 13h (they slept almost 15h!). We were exhausted, sure, but there’s nothing like the power of being home.
I have been an Assistant Professor for 6 months and it feels like 2 years... I really hope this feeling has something to do with

It’s my PhD graduation anniversary. I was 7 month pregnant at my defence. H and I got my PhD together. My scientific goals are influenced from motherhood experiences. Work hard and don’t compromise who you are. Science needs mothers and mothers need science.

Biggest congratulations to my dear

for passing her qualifying exams! I heard

When I had my twins, I had “help” from both families for 5 months! They overlapped so we were not left by ourselves. I wanted to be by myself SO badly.

I can’t begin to express what these guys mean to me & how extremely lucky I am to have them. The depth of this gift goes beyond science & I will never forget it. I’ve had nice gestures before but this is just unbeatable. Rose, Shumaila, Mari, Binh, Yasmin & Farzeen. THANK YOU ❤️
last 48h: my nanny left us, post nanny ad, interviewed 3, accepted 1, got rejected by her, saw 2daycares, chose 1, got health &vaccines statements for 👩🏼🤝👩🏻, started enrollment, got new👩🏼🤝👩🏻clothes, prepared a class (read paper, restudy enzymology, Q&As) + daily👩🏼🤝👩🏻&💻

Great talk by Ashani Weeraratna (

I’ve had a very good number of lows last few months. Big lows… I still enjoy my job, & my team of fantastic scientists keeps me afloat. But I need some wins! Last week we got a small grant & today we got encouraging news! we all need to celebrate. So… Friday… lab pool party!!
