Probably why it’s illegal in many countries. I can’t fire anyone without probably cause and going through court first. Literally need to obtain a “firing permit”.
The below is a remote US-only position. Some people replying “What if I work US hours from <elsewhere>?”
⛔️ Not going to work. We’ve hired people in far-away time zones who said they’d work EU hours, and it created a terrible work/life balance for them and wears people out.
We have another programmer opening at 37signals. Fully remote, pay between $170,000 - $201,980, eligible for profit share after 2 years, and the chance to work with some amazing people on Basecamp, HEY, ONCE, Rails, Kamal. Oh, and Linux 😄
I'm excited to announce that

It's an anniversary! 🥳 Nineteen years ago, we started running
#RubyOnRails
in production, which is crazy long in internet years. From a CMS
@thijsc
and I built on Rails 0.12 to a multi-million business serving thousands of developers. What a ride! See you at
#RailsWorld
.
@rails
Number of Ruby and Rails conferences we’re sponsoring in 2024: 13 confirmed, so far. I expect at least 3 more. ✨
Stroopwafels everywhere. 🍪

Docker, like any other software, only exists because it stands on the shoulders of giants (they, too, rely on OSS). It would be nice to recognize that and help broaden those shoulders.
@josevalim
I know this doesn’t fix the issue at its core, but let me know if the money is the issue (in the short term). We can take care of some bills; Elixir and other OSS is important to us.
The cat's out of the bag: AppSignal will be the main sponsor for the
#RailsWorld
conference in Amsterdam (Oct 5 & 6)!
Let me know if you're attending because I'd love to meet as many
#RubyOnRails
developers as possible (I'll bring
#stroopwafels
) :)
More good news:
@AppSignal
is the
#RailsWorld
Platinum sponsor. With a long history of bringing fun and stroopwafels to Rails events, they are the perfect partner to help create this first edition. Full blog here:
TIL: In 2024,
@AppSignal
will ship over half a metric ton (500kg) of stroopwafels across five continents. 🤯
My kids honestly thought I was a stroopwafel wholesaler until recently.
Programmers tend to engage selectively with an event organizer's content on Twitter. They're quick to like or retweet intriguing topics slated for a conference, yet show less interest when organizers discuss sponsorships.
Remember, sponsorships are crucial for the success of
Someone forgot to put a limit on my corporate credit card, and now I accidentally ordered 3,600 stroopwafels (140+ kilograms), to be delivered tomorrow 🫣
@nateberkopec
Hi Nate! Not a good thing to wake up to, and I’m going to get to the bottom of this today get back to you asap about how we can make this right.
Just returned from my 16th trip to the US, for the first time with my wife and kids. Some random observations from traveling the US 🇺🇸 for 22 days, compared to the Netherlands 🇳🇱
🚗 Keep your lane: 100x better and faster than "keep right" (also: little to no tailgating)

AppSignal is going canal cruising on Thursday night (first day of

In the first 72 hours after publishing and announcing our Product Developer job opening, we received on average 1 application every 4.5 minutes. Thirteen per hour, for 72 hours straight. We’re always in high demand, but this was a first 🤯
Yesterday I learned – once again – that people are hardly ever upset about a mistake you made, but rather about how you (not) reacted when they told you about it.
People who say this wasn’t visionary in 1999 seem to have forgotten this was 8 years before the iPhone, and don’t remember what mobiles for the masses were like back then...
End of an era. My first
#RailsConf
– and my first time visiting the US – was Las Vegas in 2009. Overwhelming. After that first one, I got to present at three (!!) RailsConfs and was on the program committee, chairing two tracks, for another. What a ride. ❤️
Our final — yes, final — RailsConf in 2025 will be a special one focused on celebrating the Rails community. Read more about this, other big changes happening at Ruby Central and how you can get involved here:

Then they’re generally fooling themselves. We’ve hired on that premise in the past, and people will eventually wear themselves out starting really early or finishing up really late. Worst outcome for everyone involved.
A

So far, I received a dozen congratulations, some on my 58th birthday.

Many of the reactions to this are terrifying. As if people have no idea how literally 99% (rough estimate) of businesses work.
Your local supermarket, pub, shoe store. Even your friendly APM provider.
Unlike companies that reinvest all or most of the money back into the company every year, we take all the money (profit) out every year in the form of distributions (we’re an LLC).
This means every year we take risk out of the company. Companies that keep reinvesting keep adding

Starting work at 4:00 or quitting at 23:00 five days a week is terrible for anyone. Never being able to do anything relaxing on a weeknight, for instance.
So, about Covid-19. I can’t remember when I last was this sick. Either the vaccine (three doses) doesn’t work against omikron, or I would have been in the ICU without it.
