To newly minted Product Managers: Several years ago, I left school early to accept a job as a PM. I barely knew what the job entailed, failed a bunch, & learned a ton. With that, I tend to get a constant stream of new PMs reach out for advice. Here's what I tell them —

*Facilitate don't dictate* — You have responsibility, not authority. Your job isn't to make decisions, it's to give a group of very smart people the context they need to make a decision. Do this well & you're golden. The "CEO of the product" line has derailed many PM careers.

*What is a win?* — It's simple: 1/ Help build something people want. 2/ Ship it on (or before) schedule. 3/ Once you're done, make sure the team doesn't hate you. Many PMs struggle with doing 2 of the 3 consistently, let alone all 3.

We read/preach a lot about startups being hard, stressful, etc. That's all true... but they're also so much fun. Many of us founded/joined a startup because few things brought more joy than seeing an idea come to life. It's easy to lose sight of this.

*Be a catalyst* — The best PMs I know view themselves as catalysts. Without the PM, the team would still move forward. With the PM, they should move significantly faster. This isn't a diss. In a world of compounding wins, helping things move faster can be extremely impactful.

One of the best parts of starting a company is getting to interact with other founders. It's unlike anything I've experienced before. Grateful & helpful. Doesn't even matter if you're in the same market. There's this vibe of "It's hard enough, I hope one us makes it."

0/ WHAT’S ONE THING YOU WISH YOU WOULD HAVE DONE SOONER? - I often get asked by new founders, product managers, tech leads, etc “If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself?”. I always say - prioritize learning how to #recruit . Here's why:

*Don't control the flow of information* — You might feel insecure because you don't bring a tangible skill-set to the team. Many PMs try to control the flow of external information as a way to feel valued. Do yourself a favor & skip this step. You'll grow 10x faster when you do.

I'll never forget my first meeting as a product manager (intern). The meeting went well, and I wanted to end it with something positive like "I'm excited!" or "This is awesome!" Unfortunately, what came out was.. "Great job, everyone. I'm awesome!" Years later, still mortified.

*Get your first win* — Sure, the praise is nice. However, the most important reason to get your first win is so you build a barometer for what it feels like. When you have this barometer, you can tell if you're on/off track before it's too late. Great PM's have this sixth sense.

Early in your career, the goal is to MAX(opportunity). Take every chance at bat to prove you can hit. Once people see you can hit, the goal *quickly* changes to MIN(opportunity_cost). Always at bat, w/ many pitches at once, and you need to decide what's a single vs. a home run.

I’m always shocked by smart, young, driven people who choose a company because of “mentorship”. Yes, it is good to have some guidance, but most driven folks succeed through figuring sh*t out on their own. Being around smart young people >>> mentors, even for energy alone.

In a recent 1:1, someone asked how I got over my imposter syndrome. I haven't, still feel it. Though, not as much. Counterintuitively, what helped came less from me feeling like I figured it all out, and more from realizing that people I look up to haven't either.

After catching up on sleep over the past couple of days, it's been nice spending time today reflecting on what's happened and what's to come @threads . 2022 was our biggest year yet. A lot of hard work really came together in Q4 with the release of our latest iteration.

Hobbies Include: Flipping straight to the 2x2 grid in a startup's deck to see which labels they chose to position themselves in the top right corner. It's an art form worth appreciating.

The most impressive people I know don't just think deeply, but they can express with that same depth. They accurately articulate their feelings, what they need, what they're bad at, their goals, etc. Their growth & feedback loops are on a whole other level.

2/ ADVICE. Compared to people from underrepresented backgrounds, I realized that I've been playing work on "easy mode.” These investors have become successful under harsher constraints which means their advice tends to be more focused, efficient, and effective (by necessity).

7/ IT’S SO MUCH MORE FUN - When you do this right, you find yourself lucky and humbled to come into work every day. You realize that everyone is better than you at most things, and you push yourself to grow to be the leader they deserve.

If you're leading a team, take a moment to give them some time & space back today. I was so distracted by what's going on, it didn't even register that I should say something until a teammate brought up how intense the day feels.
