Iβve coached 25 years; Iβve seen over 100 Michigan games from the sidelines... but TOMORROW - I get to watch my SON call defense for the first time, from the field!

I think some of these offensive gurus may want to consult with a DC when drawing up plays..like...no way in hell would my D ever align like that. No wonder you think all your plays will work.
My wife says the only place I can look for a HS teaching/coaching job out of state is in the state of Texas. She is one heck of a coach's wife!

I havenβt posted in a while... Iβve just been working on me. I needed to get my mind and body right; spiritually and physically. God is good All The Time. Oh... and Iβm down almost 70 pounds. βπ»ππ»
My advice to new/young coaches on here - follow guys like
@slade248
who will follow you back and engage with you vs following college guys with 22K followers who rarely post and won't follow back. There are quite a number of great coaches who will be glad to engage.
In case you OC's have never coached defense...we actually have RULES...so, you want to go 32 personnel and then go empty the next play without subbing...awesome...again, we have RULES.
#guruswhodontknow
Been coaching football since 1995; I think itβs time to take a break and just be a dad while my son has a couple years of college ball left. Canβt retire though... made a promise to coach so that the grandkids could grow up on the field π

@morgan_bobb
Most coaches can talk scheme and draw up a defense; it's those that can TEACH the A.S.K.A. and improve football IQ that get the most out of their teams/athletes. Plays are won/lost before the ball is ever snapped.
Iβm not sure you ever know the impact you may have on a studentβ¦ until they ask you to walk them down the isle π°πΌ

My dad missed my HS graduation, watching me play legion baseball and college football; missed my wedding... because he chose to.
Iβm not a bitter person because of it, Iβm a better person because of it. βοΈ
25 years in coaching... itβs not the wins. Itβs all those great players and relationships Iβve made along the way. Long after I forget the scores, Iβll remember the names.
0-2 sucks. However, having a sheriff tell your son he has no idea how he is alive after avoiding a collision with a truck....that record isn't so bad...
One month ago today, I had a "warning" stroke. After 30 hours in the hospital, I was released. 4 hours later, a wonderful family lost their father. He was only a few years older than me. Don't ignore warning signs - take care of yourselves.
Next Tuesday's
#swarmfbchat
will focus on the Defensive Staff. DCs who want to delegate more responsibility and what that looks like; young guys who are looking for more and eager to get involved. It can be scary on both ends - letting go and asking for more!
2017 - you were a tough one; new job, new team, had a stroke, lost friends - but, as 2018 nears...Still teaching/coaching; healthier than before, new friends, awesome wife, great kids. Lots to be thankful for.
Iβm not super smart...not good-looking or in great shape...and I donβt have much money. What I DO have are kids who rely on me every day that I love, adore, and cherish. It makes me the most popular, flawless, richest person out there, and I could not want for more.
#dadfeelings
Can a DC out there DM me or share their gameday call sheet/template? I've had a heck of a time with putting those together and actually never really use one. I think if I had something more organized, I'd rely on it more often.
Tonight's

A couple years back I used to run the
#swarmfbchat
on Tuesday nights.
Any interest out there for bringing it back? Used to get 20+ coaches a night. Not sure how many more defensive chats have come out since then.
I read an interesting quote: it said the biggest thing you can control is How you talk to yourself. I never thought of that, but to me, thatβs pretty powerful. Inside your head can be a dangerous place to stay for too long!
I may never win a state title or fill up a trophy case, but this sport has given me so much more over the last 25 years. Relationships/Friendships that will outlast any game/trophy.
Itβs during the recruiting process for my son
@ColinMcCartney4
where his 3.51 is doing more than his film! Proud of his academics as they are opening more doors!

This off-season I have learned: You can't be stagnant - staying complacent is a losing mentality. I've decided to take more challenges and change the way I coach/prepare/adjust. If you don't change, neither will your outcomes.
You want to know about the coaching community? I asked for a sample call sheet....got 11 coaches that responded in about 2 minutes!

If there is an interest, I will host a

tonight at 9pm EST - got a 2-hour delay tomorrow, so I might as well put one together. Next one will be on 1/16 due to AFCA. Enough likes, we will roll at 9.
Does it mean I'm near the end of my coaching career when I enjoy speaking to staffs/at clinics as much as I do coaching on a Friday Night? Probably not. But, sharing knowledge and experience is rewarding. Many of us would be quite lost without this sport, I assume.
Stealing the "Chalk War" idea from

and using the format for our

tomorrow night at 9pm EST. I will give you scenarios - you share your scheme/philosophy/strategy.
Tuesday night 9pm EST is the return of

We will discuss self and team assessment and off-season procedures we should be taking advantage of in Nov/Dec. The ONLY full-time Defensive online/live football chat. Tell your coaching brethren!
38 more school wake-ups before summer break; it's not about "getting through", it's about "getting the most" of these days. 4th quarter is never about laying back.

Teacher; former HS/college football coach. Spoiled UM football guy⦠truth be told: Bill McCartney is my uncle; Lloyd Carr is my stepdad.
Tomorrow night at 9pm EST will be the return of

I believe it may be starting itβs 4th year π€·πΌββοΈ We will chat about off-season planning/film self-evaluations. Pass it along and letβs get a good number of defensive coaches in attendance!
#swarmfbchat
coaches - anyone interested in chatting about DB install for a topic on Tuesday? Want to talk about where you start and finish when it comes to the secondary.
Any interest in a DL-themed
#swarmfbchat
tonight at 9pm EST? I will have 4-5 questions to ask over a 30-40 minute span. Anything over that and we lose interest and participation.
Before you guys log out - want to take this opportunity to thank you for making this the best Defensive-Themed Twitter Chat of the week! Lots of great info floating around - can't wait to go back through and steal ideas - thanks for always helping each other!

Q1. In any 2x1, 3x1 set do you allow your backside DB to play man vs
#1
or is it pre-determined? Do you have a base rule that you follow in that situation?
#swarmfbchat
Said this to a young player today: it does not take any special skills, speed, or strength to have good eyes, ears, and communication with/for your teammates on defense.

Q1: How many of you at the HS level package defensive personnel? I've never been one to do it, but why not? Is there an easy way to make sure you have a 1st down run package vs a 3rd down pass package? I've got to do a better job utilizing skill sets of my players.
