The government is happy to trade on stuff like kimono or anime or whatever, to bring tourists, but actually supporting those businesses is a step too far. It's ridiculous. Same thing with encouraging Japanese studies abroad. They'll pay lip service, but no actual promotion.

It’s not just Kyoto either. Many of my friends in Osaka running kimono businesses have struggled horribly, and it’s not just rental shops either. Kimono stylists and dressers are definitely in trouble and the government is doing little to help
