I'm just as proud of what we created @ GV. It was a privilege to be there day one and impressive to see where

The 1st Android phone, the T Mobile G1, launched 15 yrs ago in NYC! We never imagined that Android would dominate the world wide mobile phone market & become the most popular OS of all time. I unboxed an old G1 for the occasion. Happy birthday

Meta might be trying to emulate Android w/their approach to the Metaverse but this article got so much wrong about Android, our motivation, execution & market dynamics that we should correct that before you try to draw parallels. via

All along we were working on 2 phones, Sooner, more blackberry-like & Dream, touchscreen based. After the iPhone launch we did cancel Sooner to focus on Dream (eventually the Google G1) but its design changed little from this rendering made 5 months before the iPhone launched.
Ten years ago today we were in NYC with Google executives announcing the first Android release and phone. - Android at 10: Google's mobile OS has come a long way
@Arubin
Im happy to support this tribute to Leonard Nimoy. Star Trek & Spock nurtured my interest in science & technology and inspired aspects of my startups: Wildfire, the first voice based personal assistant & Android (likely the OS for the tricorder in 2265). You can also contribute!
Breaking news! We just received confirmation that the Museum of Science in Boston, is getting a major contribution from the co-founder of Android to support the creation of the Leonard Nimoy Memorial Sculpture. Thank you for your generous donation!

Where are our elected Democrats? Your base is exhausted and anxious from 4 years of this, and now Trump's continuing sedition, and it seems other than
@PascrellforNJ
most of you are involved in internal sniping rather than speaking out of doing anything about Trump!
Amazing news today as one of the largest departments
@UMassLowell
becomes the Richard A. Miner School of Computer & Information Sciences. We are hugely grateful to
@richminer
for his support

Lesson for a metaverse: 1. Rapid growth was key - headsets wont have the trajectory phones did; 2. One company controlling the platform would be bad, Android was open source, competition was good; 3. Lots of apps w/easy distribution fuels platform adoption but rely's on point 1.
First, Google did not create Android, they acquired us in mid-2005 yrs before any hint of the iPhone. This runs counter to
@samdelouya
's thesis that Google developed Android "to compete with Apple." What happened, and perhaps relevant to building a metaverse, is that...
@RBReich
This is a naive way to look at it. Bloomberg has political experience, a public track record, and a positive brand. We know less about how Schultz or Dimon would do in public office but comparing the group to Trump just because they have resources is wrong.
We have a continued problem with Democrats inability to control & influence media cycles - conservatives are master's at it. This is our single biggest risk halting our downward spiral. The Democrats need a brilliant Chief Maketing Officer and/or a communications plan!
People criticizing

Android had two term sheets in hand for our series A at the same time Google engaged with us. We were just getting going and would have had plenty of runway.
Happy 15th Anniversary Android! On November 5th 2007 Google announced something bigger than a single phone, we announced the Android Operating System now serving over 3 billion users making it most popular OS ever.
@lockheimer
Not mentioned was the importance of 3rd party apps. Android announced our developer platform & App Market Nov 2007, Apple followed in June of 2008. The availability & growth of 3rd party apps was key to the platforms market success & eventual revenue generation, Meta gets this.
Yes, Job's was not happy about Android & being an important partner we made small changes to appease him before launch. Saying we were "duping" Apple is wrong, Android was developed at the same time w/no information flow. Similarities were based on similar tech & constraints.
Our concern in 2005 was not Apple but Microsoft who had launched Windows Mobile. Our startup pitch warned against a repeat of where msft controlled PCs. Google had responded to that with their investments in browsers (another platform) and saw Android a similar mobile bet.
Also, thinking one would chase iPhone back then is revisionist. When Android launched a year+ after the iPhone it was thought smartphones would represent maybe 30% of the market, no one imagined them replacing most other phones. Besides, by 2010 Android had leaped ahead of iOS.
Google (initially mostly Larry Page) was convinced by our pitch that mobile phones were going to become small computers in your pocket, broadening access and enriching their services w/location. We argued it would be bad for any one party to control such a pervasive platform.
@sama
Major decisions like this have huge ripple effects that require thought and planning. I watched Google under strong leadership, & w/significant expert advice plan for well over a month how to institute our WFH policy so as not to break things. You can't shoot from the hip.
You know what? Go ahead. Repeal Section 230 immunity. Please do.
Then I can watch and laugh as all these conservative advocates for it are shocked as they're banished from social media and platforms like Parler dissolve under threat of lawsuits.

This is a pretty myopic view of VC - heavily west coast focused. Matrix, Greylock, Venrock - all started on the east coast. Matrix started in 1977 had one of the biggest returning funds for many years, was early in Apple, etc.

Fav: opennes means more innovation by third parties, plus It was created by some really bright caring people 😁
LeastFav: Google's continued lack of messaging strategy leave it exposed to cannibalization by iOD; Some OEM's (not Nothing) alter the user experience in negative ways

Did you know your local convenience store puts an x% tax on everything you buy through them.. Since when is a store charging a margin a new thing? And stores often charge more if something is easy to find (like end-cap placement, etc.)
I don't know what's more impressive,

While driving with my kids @ that age we made up the "internet game". Two of us each say a random word at the same time. Then each person does an infomercial for the hypothetical start-up word1 + word2 .com

The guy gets death threats for being a hardworking public servant. It does not matter if you agree with all of his decisions or not, this is not OK. In some ways Elon has been radicalized and that is not OK.
Funny thing is that a primary reason I co-founded Android was my worry over Windows Mobile, which I helped launch at Orange. I was concerned Microsoft would control the mobile phone platform just like they controlled the desktop.

SpaceX has executed better w/more innovation than NASA & legacy contractors. I have good friends who are astronauts who validate this. Also, not a good idea to say billionaire == bad, that attitude in part got us into this situation imho.
Wilbur Ross failed to mention that his own Department of Commerce federal credit union is charging upwards of 9% interest on emergency loans to furloughed workers. These people are vile.

Someone who states they are willing to talk to others with opposing views does not seem as suspectable to confirmation bias as say.. YOU.
How do you interpret those words written at that point in time in the constitution given what you know of the framers goals?
@ZacksJerryRig
All good points.. though on the
@MKBHD
video - while 28.7M seems high, it is less than 1% of the current active Android users - probably a better metric than the much smaller US population ;)

Thanks you Dave for all of your years of contribution to Android, you had so much impact on the platform over all those years. Android is so much more powerful for your efforts.

I believe this technology will also help great thinkers who are not great writers. I'm not saying I'm a great thinker, but I know im a poor writer (likely orthographic dyslexia). I've been iterating some blog post ideas with

It's like Disney designed a country, top attractions all a short drive from one another: glacial caves, geysers, bubbling hot lagoons, hot springs hikes, modern city with a good art & restaurant culture
Back on topic, that video is so spot on!
Nothing about MLK's name makes it a common mistake to insert a racial slur in the middle. This only happens if you are used to saying it that way or hanging with people who do - St. Louis newscaster apologizes for inserting slur into MLK's name on air
