At House Education Committee listening to so much heartfelt testimony in opposition to HB 105, Governor Dunleavy’s ‘Don’t be trans bill.’ What an honor to meet
@Apayauq1
whose testimony was especially moving.

Traveled to Bethel yesterday to examine food transport in rural Alaska where most food is flown in. 🧵 We started off with a trip to the main grocery store. These were the typical “sale” prices (1/4):

March 31 is Transgender Day of Visibility. My colleague

The Governor’s veto of Senate Bill 140 (first substantial raise of the base student allocation in years) is depressing but not unexpected. I will vote to override; I hope 39 other legislators join me 🤞

My colleague
@AlyseGalvin
wrote this amazing op-ed. She’s right: Alaska’s teachers “are the heroes who persevere in spite of the austerity imposed upon them by the state.” We must increase education funding now.

Senate Bill 119, which I carried in the Alaska House, was signed into law today by Governor Dunleavy. This law requires Dept of Corrections to issue valid photo ID to every person upon their release from incarceration. It’s a great day.

Rep. Will Stapp did something amazing today. He amended a bill that extends Medicaid benefits to postpartum mothers for 12 months so that it applies to all moms who earn up to 225% of the poverty rate (up from 200%). An additional 450 Alaska moms per year’ll be covered.

A fellow legislator engaged in a line of questioning today that implied something terrible. Worse than you can possibly imagine. I won’t repost or retweet his words, but here was my response.

Today I moved an amendment to establish a single-payer healthcare system for Alaska. Our current healthcare system has the highest costs in the US with some of the worst outcomes. A revolutionary new approach is needed, but sadly we didn’t even vote on it.

I carried the companion legislation for SB 119, a bill that requires the Dept. Of Corrections to provide ID to all folks released from incarceration. Big thanks to Sen. Robb Myers & Dept. of Corrections for support. 40-0 in House; 20-0 in Senate.

Historically,

has overridden 43 vetoes. The last time we did was '02. We overrode 20 Knowles’ vetoes & 14 of Hammond’s! We have overridden 0 of the last 5 governors' vetoes. The legislature should reassert its authority as an equal branch. Sadly,yesterday was not that day.
Heather Flynn fought and defeated Anchorage School District’s mandatory resignation policy for pregnant teachers in 1971. Then she was president of the school board. Then she was on the Anchorage Assembly for 10 years, half of them as the only woman.

My office is tracking this disturbing news. We will be exploring all options to correct the Alaska State Commission for Human Rights’ decision to allow discrimination against LGBTQ people.

Thursday, I presented HB 198 which would expand the recertification period for

Today, I paid tribute to former Alaska Senator and delegate to the Alaska Constitutional Convention, Vic Fischer, who we lost on October 22, 2023.
Vic lived an amazing life, passionately lived his values until the very end, and did what was right, no matter what.
We must increase the supply of housing. AK housing prices are at a record high and so are rents. I attempted to secure $10m for the Housing Alaskans Public Private Partnership which provides $ directly to new housing projects. The amendment failed.🙁
#akleg
House Bill 330 which passed yesterday would institute a tablet program in Alaska prisons, but thanks to an amendment I made, it also reduces the price of inmate phone calls by over 90%. Stopping the massive overcharge on inmate phone calls rights a terrible injustice.

However, due to concerns about the fiscal note, staffing, and "unintended consequences," the amendment failed to pass on a 2-5 vote. I will continue to fight to expand protections for our youth - especially our 16 and 17-year-olds who remain vulnerable under current statute. 2/2
In House Judiciary on Friday, after 29 Alaskans testified in opposition, I attempted to stop Rep. Allard’s HB 183: a hateful, discriminatory, unconstitutional bill that marginalizes trans youth. Sadly, I failed to stop it.

Gov Dunleavy’s decision to use his line-item veto authority to cut $87 mil in one-time funding for AK’s public education system will cause irreparable harm on our already struggling school districts. I fully support an effort by the

Yesterday, I passed an amendment that outlaws social media for children under the age of 14; it allows social media for 14 to 15-year-olds with parental consent. Social media has destroyed our young people's mental health. This is a common sense way to keep them safe.
#akleg
1 more: why is this happening in 2023? 1 reason: bypass mail, which is cheapest, is lowest priority. after PFDs, folks order stuff from Amazon which takes priority. The river is freezing up: no boats/no snow machines. Food is last priority and sits in hangars for DAYS

Sad to learn that Vic Fischer has died.
He was the last surviving delegate to the 1955 convention that wrote Alaska’s Constitution.
Born in Berlin in 1924. Raised in Germany & Russia. Moved to AK at 26.
Served in the territorial legislature and state Senate.
I am excited to introduce my new staff for the second session of the 33rd Legislature - Matthew and David!
We are looking forward to a great session - please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns!

I am shocked and saddened by the passing of Gene Peltola, Jr. He was an extraordinarily kind person who improved the energy of whatever room he was in. All my condolences to the Peltola family at this terrible time.
Dan Robinson, Chief of Labor Research & Analysis: to increase migration to Alaska we need higher-paying jobs & to keep people here we need excellent schools and universities. How? I say we must increase the BSA and return to defined benefit retirements.

Although the op-ed is about homelessness, look at those numbers: in 1986 the state provided $150 million in today’s dollars to Anchorage; just $1.7 million today. The state needs to allocate more money to Anchorage’s operating budget.This is absurd.
