Meteorologist, surfer, skier, husband and dad x3. Forecasting for Emmy winning ABC10 Morning Blend Northern CA. 4x Emmy, Murrow, AP, 3x Golden Mike winner.
The US Census released an accuracy check today for 2020 and revealed they think they missed about 19 Million people...almost the size of New York State. I kept telling people back then that this was the biggest unreported story...something was not adding up.
By the way...this is initially about counting people...but it changes the number of reps for congress AND the electoral college. Changes for 2024

As a meteorologist, it gives me no joy to forecast this record hit in California...in fact it horrifies me. I live here, I don't want this and I know it's likely to get worse 1/
Hello from rainy California...yes it rains here...sometimes too much and that is where we are now. It's relentless and the impacts and risks keep rising. If you want to know what's going on out here...read this thread 1/
To all my Arizona friends...don't be afraid of using the term
#haboob
. It's a real weather term to describe what happened last night. Dust storm is vague. Dust storm could be blowing dust all day. Haboob is sharp wall of dust from outflow
@ninaturner
Context: This is for tipped service workers in many other states as well. If you don't make enough to get to the state's minimum wage...the employer has to make up the gap...however...if worker is getting tips and making minimum wage..or higher they pay $2.13
If you are reporting on Maui you need to understand that the siren system is for a tsunami warning not for fires. They can't decide in the moment to use it for a different purpose. In fact it could have created confusion to move away from the ocean when that could be safest place
The harsh reality is that one day some extreme is coming for you...and one that far exceeds what is expected for an area. It may be heat, fire, flood, Cold (Texas) and we have to reimagine what places look like and feel like because we are living in a time of change and extremes
For the first time in years California is 100% Drought free. Yellow is "abnormally dry" which is not a drought level. It's been years since we have seen this.
Since I have been working in California I have seen the worst drought going back 1,000 years...then another (the current one). Extreme heat, worst air quality in the world for a few days, 18/20 biggest fires in state history 2/
Days without sunshine due to smoke, record warm and dry winters...also massive storms that dropped a ton of rain, flooding events, spillways breaking at huge dams, millions of people without power to prevent fires. 3/
mudslides taking out highways, homes cutting off whole areas like Santa Barbara and Big Sur...Today yet another extreme is likely to fall. Hottest all-time temperature..happened in Livermore Monday, and probably more today. 4/
I've been on-air roughly 20 years and grew up here. I spent time in Montana, Arizona, and Mississippi along the way and those spots had all sorts of extreme weather as well...fires, heat and on an on 5/
Good morning from rainy California as we are still in the middle of a MAJOR storm cycle that is kicking back in today. Here is the latest if you want the local perspective in this thread 1/
This is what the
#CaldorFire
is doing at 8am folks. Another bad situation unfolding with stronger winds today and very dry air. This is near Grizzly Flats in the Sierra foothills
The 120 degree reading today at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is truly one of the craziest things I have EVER seen in Meteorology. It’s about 9 miles to the Pacific Ocean with 63 Degree Ocean temps.

Update on California power situation. We NEVER had rolling blackouts during this unprecedented heat wave (likely worst ever). It was close, small local outages did happen for other reasons but the state AND people’s efforts worked.
So we are in a situation that is not totally uncommon (flooding...too much rain) but is a major event..for the whole state...Southern California has been nailed as well. We are getting water we need, at a price and with rain for the next 7-10 days or more the price is increasing
Dams are used to prevent flooding now...water storage later. With more storms and snow...they should be able to manage this very well in the future. BTW if you are dropping in with hot takes on California Water...I would skip it...we have a system, it works when there is rain 7/
Sacramento is called the City of Trees for a reason...it is an identity...and to see such amazing trees toppled is hard to watch...and lives have been lost as well 14/
First of all...this is a historic cycle of storms...straight up. We rarely see this many consistent strong Atmospheric River style storms. We are in one now...with more to come...for the next 10-15 days. 2/
Lake Oroville is up 60 feet since October....we also have LOTS of moisture coming in next 7-14 days. Some is cold and will be snowpack but this is all good for a big CA Reservoir.
So I want to talk about the upcoming fire season. I've been out here in California for years forecasting and there are a few things I need to put out there. THREAD 1/
By midnight tonight it will be 45 days in a row for Sacramento without rain in our rainy season. This is a BIG deal and has never happened before since we started keeping records since 1877 (or before!)
Hey everyone from SNOWY California...just some local perspective from what's going on out here during a massive winter so far it's been truly nuts and more is coming...THREAD 1/
@espn
While Sacramento appreciates the attention...using the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco skyline with a beam is a tad disrespectful. We actually have a bridge...and it's gold too!
#CaldorFire
in the last 12-24 hours has been following the wind and terrain with a lot of East movement. We have one more day of Red Flag Conditions in the Tahoe Basin so this is not over but yesterday the movement was the best possible outcome.
Finally the x-factor in all this is WIND...this is likely what you have seen on the national news. Wet ground, soft soil and 60-100 foot trees that are COMMON around here...have fallen down with major power outages and damage...seeing this is heartbreaking 13/
Hello from California...have you heard about our winter? Here is some local knowledge about how things are going...and what's next for us in the weather world. Hang on. 1/
I don't know quite how to say this without overhyping things but California looks VERY busy until the end of the month with rain and especially snow. Early heads up for xmas road travel.
I've been at work since midnight...every hour there has been some new development with the wind/fire event unfolding in Northern California....here's what really is going on out here. THREAD 1/
IMPORTANT: If you are trapped in Tahoe/Reno from storm and sleeping in car...if you are running car for heat make 100%sure exhaust is NOT BLOCKED People die from that. Clear it out and take shifts to keep clear. Share please.
Now we go high...after cold storms in the beginning bringing the earliest ski area openings in a decade for some we are now 80% of a normal snowpack for APRIL. We rely on snow in CA for water...and we are doing well 4/
Early heads up for Northern California next week. Real heat is coming back with a decent stretch of 100 degree days or hotter starting as early as Wednesday. Again thi s is for next week.
The ocean has been massive and angry and we have seen widespread destruction from Capitola, to Mission Beach in San Diego...piers falling apart and Pebble Beach area golf courses washed over from the ocean. The swell alone is a big story. 3/
So here is what's happening on the ground in California for the fire weather story. It's genuinely freaking everybody out. If we get ZERO fires out of this (small miracle) the power shut off will be remembered for a long time.

This storm coming in Wednesday for Northern California is a pretty big deal. It will end the fire, clean up air, have major holiday travel issues like snow over passes, and probably some burn area debris flows. Get ready! Comes in Wed.
They are both BELOW average for this time of year but Oroville is catching up fast (81% as of Monday). This is a good thing now...they have room to absorb storm water for now...but in the future they may not. 9/
Hello my California friends....I'm still looking LONG term at rain and snow and it's all busy. I think we are going to get some of these reservoirs above average (for the date) by the end of this.
One storm doesn't bust a drought but a pattern...over a season will. So far this rainy season we are WAY above average in NorCal and parts of SoCal. Next 10 days will help as well especially for big Reservoirs
The foothills...where the reservoirs are...are well above average...many places more than 30 inches of rain so far...and more on the way. Some lakes are totally full...some are in flood mode...dumping water to make room for more. This is BY DESIGN 6/
Today we think about the victims of the
#CAfires
. That’s it. Thousands lost everything. Everything. We need to help them. Fire conditions are coming back tonight to Monday. This is not over.
@MoralOutrage1
Hundreds of structures gone along with many injuries and worse. When there is active fire, and strong winds with dry air, there is nothing you can do. Many have escaped but very possible some could not especially those with mobility issues.
Which brings me to the big river flooding concerns. We have already had small and medium size river flooding (Cosumnes, Mokelumne) and LOTS of smaller ones...with more today. For the Sacramento River it's VERY high...but not at flood stage. 10/
It makes me VERY happy to see that the eyes of the weather world are focused on good old Mt. Baldy in Southern California...this could be historic...it's also one of the most unique places in California...THREAD 1/
BIG increase in area for Extreme drought in California. Now up to 73% of state...last week was 53%. One thing is clear...there is NO chance this gets better until at least Fall because of California's climate and rain pattern.
