I was 19 when I graduated high school. I was 26 (turning 27) when I earned my PhD. 10 years later, now at 37, I am a Full Professor.

21 years ago today, I was diagnosed with HIV, when I was 21 years young. Then, living to 42 was unimaginable. And yet, here I stand with thousands of days of more blessings from God.
Alas, it’s true, the diagnosis changed my life. But, the diagnosis did not curtail my life.❣️
I study Black mayors. DC needs a mayor who understands that a majority-Black school district where students aren’t reading at grade-level is unacceptable & has a plan to fix it that includes restructuring unilateral mayoral control. Join me in voting

on June 21st!
Dear Friends,
I hope this note reaches you in good health and spirits. I wish to share with you that I will step down as Chair of the Department of Political Science at Howard University, effective October 3rd.
I arrived at HU as Professor and Department Chair in July 2019.
Why say “defund” when we could say redistribute, reimagine, restructure?
Messaging can make or break a movement by galvanizing ppl together or splintering fragile coalitions.
The fact is “defund” is unclear and most of America isn’t going to read an oped to learn the definition
There are 2 Black women running in the Democratic primary for Governor of Virginia. Both are Jennifer. But only one has the record of demonstrable progress for the marginalized. My delegate and senator for 4 years. I know first hand the hard work of

THREAD: Today is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
Despite the steady increase in federal HIV funding over the last several decades, the increased attention on HIV/AIDS among Black Americans and improved social attitudes, the persistent inequality of Blacks with HIV remains
I study Black mayors. I know that mayoral control of DC schools doesn’t serve our interests. The mayor shouldn’t have an outsized role in the selection of school leaders. Families, teachers, & students must have a voice that is counted; not a footnote in the meeting minutes.
This is excellent analysis in my view that sums up the high stakes many Americans, and not only Democrats, feel in this election. “Progressivism or Moderation, we will have to have that conversation another day. We are in dangerous times.”
At some point folks will wake up and recognize that
#Trump
is a dangerous tyrant that must be stopped I don’t give a damn about much outside of that.

On Monday May 17, 1982 I was born in Toledo, Ohio at 8:16pm about 10 weeks premature and weighing 1 pound 15 ounces. In NICU for six months, I survived despite the doctor’s prognosis because of my family’s unconditional love and God’s plan. To God be the glory!
This is so exciting! This man here is everything. My PhD dissertation adviser, friend, colleague and just a great guy!
Tonight I get to co-present him with this award named for our shared mentor,...
June is Alzheimer’s and Dementia Awareness month. My mother, Dr. D. LaRouth Perry, continues to fight this devastating disease while residing in memory care assisted living in Tampa under the daily care of a wonderful team along with my Dad and older brother.

One thing Governor Ralph Northam can do to begin to make positive inroads on race is mandate the name change of Jefferson Davis highway that runs throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. A basic starting point is MLK.
This week NPHC fraternity leadership met in DC. Sadly, although it is Pride Month, and they hosted their meeting in the city with the highest concentration of LGBTQ persons, the men had no dialogue about LGBTQ issues on the agenda.
Mom is back home in her assisted living facility.
Thank you!!! Thank you so!!!
We dropped everything after thanksgiving.
As Mom turned 77 and Dad turned 88, doctors told us to count the hours Mom would have left. That was December 4th. 1/5
Trump was endorsed by the KKK in 2016 and y’all are just now signing petitions for the US to declare the group a terrorist organization. Blacks don’t need a piece of paper to know the KKK has murdered us and burned our homes. We need to get their friend out of the White House.
Today is Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Did you know that more than 70% of women with HIV are Black? Did you know that Black men that have sex with men account for over 50% of new diagnoses? These numbers are as sobering as they were 20 years ago when I was first diagnosed.

This rate is actually among the highest in the DMV for PhD stipends. Doesn’t make it right, but for perspective. Many PhD funded students in the DMV are living on $20k or less.
Good financial news for D.C.: Per the city's CFO, the city closed out the 2022 fiscal year (that ended on Sept. 30) with a $440 million budget surplus. That money is divided evenly between the Housing Production Trust Fund (build affordable housing) and to pay for infrastructure.
Greta Thunberg isn’t the only trailblazing young climate leader. Activists from the Amazon to Nigeria share their ideas for battling the climate crisis.

The COVID pneumonia in Mom’s lungs is decreasing. She is yet positive for COVID, but is breathing on her own.

. The delay in justice for the unarmed Black kid is beyond a travesty. If the mayor were white, this simply wouldn’t be tolerated. We need answers - and fast.

I’m supporting

for AG. I met Bruce on the stage fighting for DC statehood. He is committed to fair treatment, accountable justice, & second chances, just as he has done for years in his civil rights litigation practice. Let’s vote, DC!
It’s so tragic that in America you can work your entire life, retire and not have enough social security, Medicare, and/or Medicaid to take care on yourself with dementia in a basic assisted living facility with little to no substantive care.
Touch matters and is the cornerstone of my relationship with Mom. I was born premature in 82, 1 pound, 15 ounces, over 10 weeks early. Mom’s touch saved my life. With dementia, I can’t heal her mind with touch, but I can warm her heart. But, COVID-19 won’t let me.

Between the Black women in Georgia and Michigan that saved the country to the Black women newly elected to public office in DC, we can all rest assured trusting their lead. Thank a Black woman today.

I will tell you this. If Fairfax is forced to resign (and he should) BUT the white men - admitted blackfacers stay, Richmond’s Broad Street might soon look like Detroit’s 12th street in 1967.
Y’all better wake up.
I’m so thrilled for my friend

and her win in the Dem Primary for VA-04. When she wins in February, not only will she be the first Black woman Congress member from Virginia, she will also be your champion. Many congrats!
For my entire life, I've stood up against bullying, spoken out for inclusion. As a Black gay boy in school, I never got the chance to learn much about Black, Ethnic or LGBTQ history. I want every DC student to see themselves reflected in what they are learning.

At the Mecca, I have also had the honor of serving as the youngest chair ever in POLS and the first openly-gay chair. This October is LGBTQ History Month and I’m proud our department has adopted new curriculum, that when implemented, will include more LGBTQ politics courses.

For only a short and precarious 4 years, I’ve had the right to marry whomever I love.
Don’t tell me civil rights are a thing of the past.
We must vote to protect rights, old and new.
I am absolutely heartbroken about Rodney’s death. I first met Rodney almost immediately after arriving in Richmond in 2015 and we became fast friends. We would meet up all the time, usually just to "shoot the breeze." 1/4
I am looking forward to focusing on my book projects and being more present with family and friends. I am equally excited about being more engaged in community, my faith, and working toward completion of my MDiv degree.
Not shockingly, it‘s surprising for DeSantis that Black history is queer history in AP curriculum. He’s welcome to sign up for my Black Queer Politics class. Yes, Ron, Black people are queer too. It’s not indoctrination, it’s mine and others’ lived experience.
DeSantis is asked during a news conference about the state's rejection of an AP African American history class. He says "this course on Black history, what's one of the lessons about? Queer theory ... that's the wrong side of the line for Florida standards."
I study Black mayors & much of that includes what they say publicly. Don’t think I’ve ever heard such an uninformed statement regarding labor & class from a Black big city mayor registered as a Dem. (Perhaps Adams being a former Republican is what makes him a research anomaly?)
