RETURNING SANGITA KALANIDHI AWARD from ACADEMY: I’ve taken this step after careful consideration as principles much larger than all of us are at stake. However I’ll always remain deeply grateful to the org for its role in my career from childhood 🙏

Music is supposed to Unite, not Divide. Here is a video of 45 Christian/Jewish artists in USA playing songs in prasie of Hindu dieties, enthralling over 45,000 people of diverse religions. Does it make them betrayers of their own religion or culture?

that I composed a few hours back. The opening of the piece, in highly accessible Tamil, says it all: "I have learnt very little, the rest of my creativity is only due to divine grace but what I am not even aware of equals the entire universe!" Seek all your wishes 🙏
Swati Tirunal Navaratri Krtis are extremely beautiful and quite distinctive from the Mantric-Tantric centred Navavaranams of OVK & Dikshitar. Look forward to sharing these in the Master Class for Acharyanet with Dr NJ Nandini in the next couple of weekends.

CLARINET ARANGETRAM: Inviting one and all to my student Pooja Krishnan’s maiden recital today at Indira Nagar Youth Hostel with Shri K V Prasad, Shri Sivaramakrishnan & Sanjay Suresh. Great to have Shri P Unnikrishnan & Shri Balu of Brahma Gana Sabha as Guests of Honour.
CHITRAVINA VINAYAKA! Thrilled to receive this auspicious Navaratri gift today from a distinguished artist in Karnataka! There are 1000s of Ganesha sculptures & paintings in diverse manifestations but surely this is a first!
Shri Umayalpuram Sivaraman was in stupendous form in my recent concert for Kalasagaram, Hyderabad with Akkarai Subhalakshmi and Ghatam Karthick. Available at:
A Seamless Korvai for Adi in Khanda Gati (80 Units) with the outstanding Shri Trichy Sankaran Sir in the Kalakshetra concert yesterday. With excellent accompaniment by Shri Bangalore Amrit, Kum Gayatri Sivani and Anahita & Apoorva.

Happy 92 Birthday to an unparalleled bowman in World Music, Shri T N KRISHNAN. His endearing & enduring excellence spanning a performing career over 80 years at the top are no accidents. His seemingly carefree style camouflages his technical mastery & incisive analytical skills🙏
Apparently it was a most peaceful end and only fitting for one whose mind was a rare combination of being among the most astute yet uncluttered in the field.
Performing in my birthplace, Mysore is always special and when it’s associated with two of the greatest musicians India has ever produced - Shri Bidaram Krishnappa’s own Rama Mandira (25th evening ) and Shri Mysore Vasudevachar’s house (26th morning), it’s a huge blessing 🙏🏼
Mandolin Shrinivas and I used to greet each other precisely at midnight three times annually - on Jan 1, Feb 12 and Feb 28 - tradition that he had initiated since our teens. Though our planet is the poorer since Sept 2014, there is no doubt that...
Violin maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman presenting the Musicians Benevolent Fund Award of Rs 100,000 (at that time, the highest in the country) to renowned composer Tanjavur Shankara Iyer in 1997. I had instituted this in 1994 through my IFCM inspired by the Cricketers Benevolent Fund.
Gamakas/Ornamentation is the life blood of any system. Excited to start this 10-Part Master Class Series on this fantastic topic (live & online) in a few hours for SciArts Services.

GURU SHRI KARAIKKUDI MANI’s demise - a colossal loss. A true giant of Mrdangam, he was rated quite highly by icons incl Shri Palghat Mani Iyer & his own idol Shri Palghat Ramachandra Iyer. Personally Shri Mani Sir was one of the first legends to play with me since I was 12.
Unbelievable - even for me - but true that 11-year old Arjun will be my first formal Chitravina arangetram tomorrow (Saturday). Please bless him as he has been inspired to take on this highly challenging instrument, his brother Sanjay (on violin) and the talented percussionists.
Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi’s Ranganatha Panchakam Sanskrit shloka in a Tamil TV serial is nice. Even nicer is this (to me unknown) vocalist’s competent delivery of it, capturing the essential spirit of my Ragamalika tune. More on this later....
Ace percussionists like Shri

SHOCKING TWIN TRAGEDY: Shane Warne and Rodney Marsh gave their lives to Cricket. And gave life to Cricket. I was among the millions that admired their phenomenal quality. While Marsh at 74 was not exactly old, Warne at 52 is even harder to swallow.
Semmangudi 112 🙏 Some of my most educative hours were spent with the doyen and I will forever cherish that he granted me the privilege of playing at his 73rd Birthday Celebrations at Shastri Hall, Chennai when I was 14.
Shastri - Schubert Twin Composer Festival in Dec saluting Shyama Shastri (1762-1827) and Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828) who composed an incredible 1000-1500 works in a short span of 31 years. Legendary artists participate & the organisers will share the schedule soon.
A small Sanskrit composition in Bhairavi remembering my dear immortal friend, Mandolin U Srinivas ji - “Srinivasamanu chintayeham” composed on 26 Feb 2018, a couple of days before my concert in his honour in Chennai...
SHRI SHYAMA SHASTRI UTKRISHT SANGEETHA RATNA: A divine blessing to receive this Award yesterday from Dr Kamakoti, H’ble Director of IIT Madras and others. All credit to Shri Paravastur Srinivas Gopalan and his dedicated team.

RANDOM MEMOIRS: I was always interested in rhythm thanks to my guru Shri Chitravina Narasimhan & learnt Khanjira briefly under the iconic V Nagarajan. Though I scarcely indulge my passion for it, I have been privileged to play with legends incl Shri T N Krishnan in short recitals
Krpa joochutaku in Chayatarangini by TYAGARAJA, though poignant in meaning, is pretty upbeat melodically. Vittal Rangan, Anantha R Krishnan, Ghatam Karthick and I had a lovely time playing this and other songs in our recent rec for Vijaya Fest 2022.
108 DIVYA DESHA GEETA MALAARTAM: Feeling most grateful to God & the great people that inspired me to undertake this pioneering initiative around June 4th & empowering me to complete it in 45 days. Dedicating this to the nation, my gurus and to the world of arts and culture 🙏
SCHEMATIC SWARAKSHARA: Compos with an in-built scheme to the Swaraksharas (where lyric syllables match with the names of the notes). I introduced this concept in Aug 1997 and this piece in Shankarabharanam, presented by K Gayathri is my first such krti.
Blessings for one of my 108 Divya Desha Gaanaamrtam compositions from the inspiring Sri Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swami Ji, visionary behind the Statue of Equality in Hyderabad 🙏🏼
Composed this piece today as a humble birth anniversary tribute to one of the greatest philosophers of recent times, Swami Vivekananda. The composition only mentions his name suggestively...
Welcoming everyone to the concert of my student Arjun Suresh on 19th June @ Dakshinamurty Audi with stalwarts Embar Kannan, Srimushnam Raja Rao & Chandrashekara Sharma. Huge blessing for him to have legends Dr Umayalpuram Sivaraman, Dr M Chandrashekaran & others grace the event!
THE MOST POTENT MENACE TO SOCIETY: A lot of discussion related to my return of Academy Award are centred on people, orgs/castes. To me it has always been about issues. This short clip (in English) brings a glaring but unmentioned one to social discourse.
Very happy to perform for CAMAGA Atlanta's OVK Aradhana tomorrow. Participants from several cities will be rendering his Saptaratna krtis which are easily among the best creations in Indian musicc. Remarkably, they are easy to learn for even those at the varnams stage.
KVN CENTENARY CONCERT: A great honour to play tmr @ BVB for the inaugural

A glittering event yesterday with top celebrities getting together to honour the 97 year old percussion icon, Dr T K Murthy with the title of Mrdanga Pitaamaha.
After hearing literally thousands of complaints about average age of listeners being rather high in classical concerts, I have come to what must have been an obvious conclusion long ago - listening to classical...
Law of Elasticity of Gentlemanliness: Batsmen stealing a few steps millions of times before a bowler delivers the ball is ‘not ungentlemanly’. But bowlers calling such chronic thieves out (of their creases) on rare occasions is.
Congratulations to all Carnatic KALAIMAMANI Awardees from this year. I will never forget Jan 1, 1985 when Shri T N Seshagopalan called me exactly at 12 AM to wish me for New Year and inform me that both of us were getting Kalaimamani that year! A most memorable 17th year for me!
I was inspired to compose this krti based on Mrtyunjaya Mantra, widely considered to be one of the two most powerful invocations in Indian Culture (other being Gayatri Mantra).
A rare privilege to have none other than the legendary cartoonist, R K Lakshman do the cover of my very first book (based on a poor sketch of the idea I shared with him). No less a privilege to have his illustrious brother R K Narayan proofread it.
His music stopped the clock for millions. Now the clock has stopped his music. But the memories are forever etched in our minds (as well as in a zillion other places, thanks to technology). Respects to the legend.
Grammar and aesthetics are neither mutually exclusive nor mutually contradictory. Awareness, a passion for correctness and hard work are the keys which only the best educators will be able to impart. I was so fortunate to have precisely such inspiring gurus in my formative years.

: Shortly after initiating Musicians’ Benevolent Fund in 1994, it was a privilege to present the Lifetime Achievement Award Function to iconic Tanjavur Shankara Iyer with violin maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman as the Chief Guest. We honoured many others over the years.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Shashi! Your selfless generosity to share your knowledge, promote talents across world and your ability to innovate to project and protect our values are absolutely amazing. Here’s wishing everything positive & peaceful for you over the next few decades.
Always an elevating experience for me to perform with legends like Shri Umayalpuram Sivaraman. Akkarai S Swamynathan Subhalakshmi and Shree Sundarkumar join us tomorrow (23rd Dec) in Parthasarathy Swami Sabha's opening day concert.
One of the most fun challenges I have ever faced were my jugalbandis with Dr Balamuralikrishna ji. He could stun his co-artists with super fast passages with unexpected twists and turns, all with a smile!! Here’s an example from our San Diego concert
A very Happy Birthday to master percussionist Trichy Sankaran whose music is as exuberant and energetic as ever at 78. Sharing a small tillana in raga Kapi as a tribute to him, subconsciously inspired by his own tillana in the same raga.

Always a learning curve for me to collaborate with legends like Dr Balamuralikrishna and a pleasure to perform with the fantastic constellation of artists in this concert.
The ever increasing appreciation for Shri Ramnad Krishnan’s music in recent years is clear testimony to the fact that he was a rare artist who was way ahead of his times. Truly honoured to play the concluding concert...

A pleasure to play my first concert of 2022 today with Shri Thiruvarur Bakthavathsalam and Shri Delhi Sunder Rajan - both of who have been accompanying me since my teens - with Shri B S Purushotham joining us.
WISHING EVERYONE A TUNEFUL & SAFE MUSIC SEASON! Strongly recommend high quality masks and social distancing norms to enjoy the concerts worry-free! Do sit further away from vocalists to avoid greater risks of aerosol particles. Inviting you all to my concert today at 6 30 pm.
Experts say that Covid 19 will peak over the next 2 months before subsiding after more vaccinations and natural recoveries. This is the ONLY way the cycle can play out before herd immunity is achieved. Fake or negative fwds won't help anymore than callousness towards the virus.
Wonderful to initiate the Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi Aradhana with goshti ganam of his brilliant Saptaratna krtis at Veda Temple in Seattle tomorrow at 10.30 am...
Beethoven's influence on the West is unquestionable. But I thought of sharing this short 3 minute video as it will reveal how he has inspired an Indian Classical musician like me to create a new raga in his honour... and present one of his pieces:
