Years ago, I watched interrogation videos that I couldn't shake. Alleged victims of sex assault were being treated like suspects, and later, criminally charged. Five years later, my investigation into this troubling police practice is out to read.
In a groundbreaking investigation, Reveal uncovers an alarming pattern: people who report a sexual assault to police end up facing criminal charges when the police don’t believe them.
Our first-of-its-kind investigation unveils the shocking findings. 🧵
I have received so many messages of solidarity and sadness. I am so deeply sorry to all of those impacted by sexual violence. I turned off my message requests for a bit simply because the heartbreak was overwhelming. There is so much work to do.
Thank you to everyone who has watched and sent uplifting messages. Can’t tell you how nice it is to see after going offline for a couple of days. I am flooded with messages and I will try to read each one. I appreciate you all so much ❤️
Finding out this news took my breath away, and I'm still catching it. I am honored and grateful that this investigation will premiere at
@sundancefest
. But there is still so much work to be done. Follow

Seeing these 404 pages is quite moving. What used to be here were stories that included a young woman's name and her mugshot after she reported a sexual assault and was arrested after police didn't believe her.
I've gotten this question in a few screenings and in my DMs: Would female detectives fix everything? Sorry, but no. This is not that simple. I have interrogation audio/video of 12-year-olds being interviewed by a female detective. They were also charged with false reporting.
I'm so grateful to
@EVAWintl
for the Media Excellence award this year. They've helped me navigate this hard and painful space of reporting with their unmatched knowledge and outsized hearts.
I’ve been researching cases just like this for years - someone starts off as an alleged victim reporting a sexual assault. And then somewhere along the way, they become the suspect and are charged with a crime. Nicole Chase is one of those people. Please listen.
What happens when police don’t believe a sexual assault?
New on Reveal, we bring you the story of Nicole Chase, whose pursuit for justice led to a yearslong legal battle that went all the way to the Supreme Court.

I emailed the news desk to let them know she was acquitted and that police left glaring holes in their investigation. Now she is suing them for violating her civil rights.
While the harm can never be undone after these stories were published and undoubtedly contributed to her online harassment, this is symbolic. From the young woman herself: "I feel as though it’s a huge step towards my healing."
I've written and deleted this tweet a few times, but given my reporting on reporting victims turned suspects and what's in the news lately, I implore reporters to scrutinize police investigations. Remain skeptical, patient, and most of all, compassionate.
I work in TV and film land, so I don't fancy myself a writer. Frankly, this process was agonizing. Editors and reporters were my coaches and teammates, and they deserve a standing ovation.

Does your news organization have a takedown committee or a process to review old crime stories? Share it here! This could really make a difference for someone.
Many news organizations have formed “takedown committees” for exactly this reason: Online stories about arrests live forever, even if the person is quietly exonerated. For newsrooms that want to explore options on old crime stories, some resources:

As
@raeoflion
investigated cases where police criminally charged sexual assault victims w/ false reporting, she found a second problem: Media coverage splashing victims’ names and mugshots all over their community, parroting police statements that they lied about being raped. 🧵
That project that has taken up your heart IS important. If you care, so will others. Surround yourself with supporters. This work is brutal and it's important. Thank you to the many people in my life who believed in this story.
This is so powerful.

I'm so grateful Tuscaloosa News and

reexamined this. It's a lesson in ethics. Journalists have to understand the harm we can cause when we run a story without independently verifying police statements. The grace and insight from Emma continues to amaze me.
This is really cool to see.

Companies are legally required to provide safe workplaces. But until recently, safety officials haven’t used their authority to enforce that general requirement to take on Amazon’s high injury rates.
Now, officials are taking action.
And finally and most importantly, thank you to victim-survivors who trusted me. Thank you for your patience and courage in speaking out. Some of you could't talk to me, and I'm grateful you listened to yourselves.
Rape is already vastly underreported. A victim should never fear that they will be taken into custody for having been raped or assaulted while undocumented. This is such an important conversation.

I'll never forget a roommate who said she didn't feel safe with my brother visiting for a few hours. Just because of his schizophrenia diagnosis. It's fucked.
