September marks my one-year anniversary of striking out as an independent dance music journalist🪩
The past year was full of pinch me moments, from covering Zedd’s 10-year ‘Clarity’ anniversary event in San Francisco for Billboard, to reporting live on the ground at IMS Ibiza
This might be a hot take (you guys lmk): Shazamming should *not* be as embarrassing as it sometimes feels because if you want to know the name of a dope song, you obviously have good taste! (even if you’re late to the party on it)
The buzz you’ve been feeling in + around dance music isn’t a coincidence. According to the IMS Business Report, the global dance music industry grew by 34% in 2022, reaching a valuation of $11.3 billion—that’s 16% higher than in the pre-pandemic period. What it means: the
Dance music to close out the Coachella main stage for the second year in a row feels like a big moment for dance music (even though it wasn’t originally planned) 👀
@Zedd
We had no idea! You killed it, as always❤️ being able to play a set that seamlessly to the audience (even though we now know it was a different experience for you on the backend) is the mark of a true master
Had to do a little signature updating this morning...✒️
With my five-year DA-nniversary less than a month away, I am excited to announce that I have been promoted to Co-Editor-in-Chief of Dancing Astronaut!
Ultra Day 1 thoughts:
▫️Zedd bringing out Ice Spice at Ultra was definitely not on my 2023 bingo card??
▫️Give Martin Garrix a lifetime booking at this festival
▫️Vibes were on 1000000, the energy at this festival is still 🙌🏻
▫️The Main Stage design is unreal
Rutgers beating
#1
ranked Purdue two years in a row is so important because these types of wins change outdated negative and stereotypical perspectives on Rutgers. It’s hard to not respect Rutgers when these landmark triumphs repeatedly happen☝🏼
Working full-time not in music and doing music-related things on the side is comical in some ways because it feels like a double life. I’ll be saying things like “deliverables” in one breath and “wonky bass” in another
Today is my five-year anniversary at Dancing Astronaut 💫In honor of it, I’m sharing 5 insights that I’ve taken from my time as a writer, editor, content strategist, and interviewer, in the hopes that they’ll reach someone finding their footing in music journalism (a 🧵, 1/6)
The mau5 is out of the bag, or whatever they say.
Speaking with Kaskade and deadmau5 about Kx5 was the most surreal part of my music journalism career to date. Check out DA’s exclusive interview on Kx5 for a fuller portrait of the new project, painted by our Editor-in-Chief!
“When we [made 'I Remember'], I mean, that moment in time wouldn’t have allowed us to do something like this."
14 years later,

I’ve worked in dance music journalism for 5+ years now + the one thing that still feels awkward is how to handle the initial address during an interview. Do I call them by their biological name (feels too personal) or by their stage name (feels too fan-like)? Neither it is lol
Artists who go out of their way to acknowledge posts written about them, perhaps not realizing that these posts are often written after a full day of work at the main job that pays the bills, on lunch breaks, in transit, etc., are industry treasures

@fredagainagain1
takes the title of DA’s 2022 Artist of the Year 👑
Entering 2022 as one of our artists to watch, he went lightyears beyond that, rising to household name status at a pace that dance music hasn’t seen in a long time.

One of my longest-term goals came to fruition today.
I’ve wanted to contribute to Billboard since I began writing about music; it’s always been one of my biggest dreams. Today, I had the chance to do just that:
This past week felt like a really unifying one for NY area dance music fans. I can’t remember the last time the NY scene as a whole felt so excited, moved, sometimes exasperated (the ticket drops were stressful!), but altogether invested in an event/series of events. Feels good
The host at the takeout place asked me, “what political campaign is this?”
State of Rutgers, baby 😎
(I’ve been waiting for someone to ask me this since I got this shirt last year and it finally happened 😂)
After writing DA’s Album of the Year and Breakout Artist of the Year features, six Artists to Watch in 2022 mini-features, and co-writing our Label of the Year feature, on top of 350+ articles this year, I’m officially out of words in 2021! Time for a very big glass of 🍷☺️
Three years ago, I was working with my Managing Editor at DA to develop my press plan for my first Coachella. It felt so surreal; I was starry-eyed.
It hit me today that *I’m* now the Managing Editor doing that for our writers. Full-circle moment that has me all sentimental 🥲
@dancingastro
@coachella
The fact that two dance acts will have closed out the main stage in the two years that Coachella has operated after the pandemic speaks volumes. We are in the midst of another golden age and no one can change my mind about it lol
Have been re-evaluating my relationship with casual/social drinking because I had the thought, “when did I last *actually* enjoy doing this?” And honestly, I couldn’t remember. I feel I’ve outgrown drinking + am more interested in doing other things that don’t involve it 🤷🏻♀️
All three of the artists I’m covering for Dancing Astro’s list of Artists to Watch in 2023 are women. Can’t wait to share their names with you and for you to see the full list 👀
The best thing about rave culture has got to be your friends hyping you up when your favorite DJ is playing/about to play as if *you* yourself were playing the set
In 2022, the top 4 genres on Beatport were:
1. Tech house (which led for the entirety of 2021 and 2022)
2. Techno
3. House
4. Melodic House and Techno
Drum and Bass, Dance/Electropop, Progressive House, Indie Dance, Minimal/Deep Techno, and Trance followed (in this order).
Ultra day 2 thoughts:
▫️This weather could not be more perfect
▫️ISOxo was a perfect fit for Worldwide
▫️HARDWELL my GOD
▫️Having come back this year, 7 years since I last went, I can really appreciate the detail Ultra puts into every aspect even more
▫️Subtronics is him
Flying cross-country to attend Zedd’s ‘Clarity’ anniversary set on October 7 and getting to cover it (and its orchestral counterpart) for Billboard feels a lot like a dream ☁️
With gratitude and elation, here are my insights on this special weekend:
every outlet wanted to publish it... but no one knew it was me.... im not gonna put peoples name out there... BUT EVERY... fucking outlet... wanted this article.... this article is about to change music journalism forever.....
Those who make fun of others for being a superfan of an artist have never made sense to me. The way I see it, connecting and identifying with another human being’s art to such a degree is a rare and distinctive phenomenon. It’s *so* special.
What they say about creative people needing time to do nothing and just *be* is so true. It seems like nothing stifles my sense of creativity/desire to create quite like a lack of free time. Anyone else?
