I bought a ProCush whip to hit myself!
As a racing fan for over a decade I never had an actual whip in my hands. Time for a little self-experiment to find out how it feels to be hit by the ProCush.
Wonderful documentary on Nijinski... beautifully narrated and stunning footage of the great horse. Whetting the appetite for the start of the 2023 flat season.
"Racing Twitter toxicity" gets to me. People chasing cheap likes. Been critical of the Curragh in the past myself but they've done great lately. €30 early bird for Derby day! Excellent food offerings, new spaces to sit etc... was a lovely, racing focused atmosphere.
Well done.
€30 for Irish Derby Day
@curraghrace
. Superb value. Access to the entire stand & parade ring etc. Excellent viewing from everywhere for a Classic race day.
I paid £26 for the cheapest ticket at Windsor for a trip over later this summer. They don't run the Derby there, I believe.
@_JoMarney
Nobody will take you serious on horse welfare if the one picture you chose to share to prove your point shows a clearly agitated, stressed animal. Which proves a different point: it's leisure horses (and millions of pets btw.) that suffer badly. Not race horses.
"Racing, who cares?"
A few thoughts on the current state and future of racing. + A few ideas how to halt the downward trajectory.
Only my opinion. Take it with a pinch of salt (or sugar).
All-Weather Eyecatchers
#1
: winter is coming and I'm starting a new list of eyecatchers for this new winter season. This is a fortnightly updated list of horses that caught my eye during the recent weeks of racing on the All-Weather.
Final day of my racing road trip, today
@EpsomRacecourse
. Incredible. What a day. What a view. So much greatness in such a rather small, confined space for a race track. Didn't expect it but Epsom close to be my fav. Absolutely loved it.
@RacingPost
Nearly ever weekend a big, meaningful race to look forward to. Competition. The best have to race (each other). Global sport with top-class racing to enjoy all over the world. The visual impression of a horse cantering all over rivals and then changing gear, sprinting away.

It's such hypocrisy. I can't punt with those bookies because they restrict anyone who wins 10 cents and I'm supposed to sign it so they can continue this way? Nope. Racing doesn't really care about punters nor fans of the sport and it's its downfall, unless fundamental changes.
4 days racing road trip over. Plenty of miles in the car; all worth it. Loved every minute. British racing retains a unique aura. For how much longer? Who knows. Time will tell. I certainly enjoyed some incredibly special days over here purely as a fan of the sport. 🏇👌💕

This is so beautiful. The type of content "we" as a the sport need to create and then promote to show the wider public what a beautiful sport this is. This is the way how you may have a slight chance of getting new people interested. Not by reducing # of airwhip strokes.
Bumper edition: five weeks of racing and about 50 eyecatchers - a list of horses that caught my eye during the recent weeks of racing on the All-Weather and also turf (finally).
Royal Ascot 2023 saw many memorable performances, in victory as in defeat. Here's a list of horses that caught my eye during the last week at Royal Ascot.
Dual Derby winner Harzand yesterday morning at Gilltown Stud. Such a beautiful and classy individual. Can't wait to his offspring on the racetrack.

Glorious day at
@Goodwood_Races
. What a brilliant place to enjoy a day of racing. Loved the different views you get from the parade ring to check on the horses. And what splendid scenic views from all the stands. Sensational. 👌
Big Bard - Wins by about 4 lengths! Was so well handicapped today with the 7lb claim of excellent Alec Voikhansky in the saddle. 🙌
This one feels really good. Was deliberating back and forth last night bc of the big field. Good decision in the end. 5th winner in April.
Ryan Moore and Colin Keane fighting it out as Money Dancer thunders home for an upset win, getting the better of well fancied Mayfair in the 7f Fillies & Mares Maiden

Outstanding value €50 for the weekend pass. Eight Grade 1 races!
@LeopardstownRC
is also a lovely track you get around easily, viewing excellent from the stands. Roll on the Dublin Racing Festival.
May 2023: 8 winners for 170pts profit.
Third green month in a row. 470pts up for the year.
Was a touch too aggressive, 53 selections, the most ever in a single month. One big winner saved the day...

Love this interview in
@TheIrishField
- shows there's so much more to racing than just betting, no matter how much the likes of Tony Calvin and Co would want to push that narrative. Racing is many different things to many different people.
You may excuse me a small "Boom" today! 😍🥳😎Soul Sister romped home to land the Musidora. Backed her at about 21/1 (18/1 SP). And that pays for all the misery of the last two weeks.
(as some sometimes ask: I backed on the exchanges, got plenty on across different platforms!)
@McDonnellDan
There's clear appetite for more authentic football experience. People who'd never had an interest in LOI now want to chat about it. It's a shame facilities lack so far behind and will do so for some time. The game can't grow beyond current state without substantial investment.
Great day at
@curraghrace
- free entrance was super for a G1 day, excellent crowd seemed to be present despite the weather being quite moody. Brought some friends who enjoyed and said they'll be back.
First time I've got the chance to watch the opening show this week: good analysis, good banter - enjoyable to watch. There'll always people who moan, but I have to say
@itvracing
is doing a fabulous job overall

Great day for racing: 🇩🇪 Derby first, and later on the 🇮🇪 Derby
@curraghrace

Soon on my way down the N7 to the Curragh. Hoping for an upset in the big one....
Royal Champion - a 33/1 winner needed to break this most annoying losing run. 31 straight losers it was. One more would have been the longest ever for me. Funny game.
Bucanero Fuerte great run for 3rd in the Coventry. The rest... not so good. Never mind. Today is a good day.
Been away for the long weekend; welcome opportunity to recharge one more time.
Uneventful end to an eventful April: 7 winners/23 selections, 235pts profit.
1/3 of 2023 over: Jan+Feb losing month, March+April green = 300pts up.
Details here as always:
2022 Betting Review: 376 points profit, 35 winners and 19% ROI.
An eventful year, with plenty of lessons learned. Here's a look back as I share my 3 key lessons and favourite moments of 2022.
Don't think the test today will suit but it's simply wonderful to see such a buzz about a German horse. Won't be my selection but from a pure fan perspective I would love to see him do the "Danedream double".
Arc winner ✅
King George winner? We'll find out soon...
We went to visit TORQUATOR TASSO and those closest to him ahead of his bid for a famous double on Saturday 🎬 ⬇️

I'm overwhelmed by the incredible amount of reactions to my self-experiment with the ProCush. Glad so many find it a valuable read.
Shows there's a huge vacuum for real information + appetite to learn about the modern whip.

Says it like it is. PETA and the likes don't care about whip rules, number of strokes or amended fences. They'll want to get the sport banned outright. Don't bend to them. Racing is wonderful as it is. It's also dangerous. Life is dangerous.
The first bunch of eyecatchers did pretty well.
Here's
#2
of flat eyecatchers - this is a list of horses that caught my eye during the recent weeks of racing.
Love this footage. How amazing it would ne to have jockey cam footage for all horses at least in the best races. Available as replay; even better if you could choose yourself as a pov to watch the race live. Great opportunities to make racing visually more exciting.
Kevin was excellent: clear, rational communication, stating real facts.
Alex, in contrast, was rattled, had no answers beyond platitudes.
What's also obvious: these people want to end horse racing full stop. You can't make it right for them no matter how much you change racing.

Good start to June: Flying Secret gets there just before the line! Had no issue with the trip. Confident, patient ride by Charlie Bishop. Drifted out to 8/1 SP, surprisingly.
Could have been a super day. Victors Dream beaten in a photo, sadly.
@LydiaHislop
Great thread Lydia. What stands out in the aftermath of DRF reactions the amount of people mentioning they enjoyed most that the vibe was all about the racing. Perhaps a nod to the BHA to think about putting some horses into their marketing material and market the actual sport?
Remarkable week on betting front: 4/12 for 230pts profit. Not sustainable, but neither were the horrible first two weeks in June a realistic measure. Variance is an intriguing thing, keep in mind in good/bad times. All winners beat BSP this week. Firmly on the right track again.
Qitaal did that quite nicely! Was way too well-handicapped, as hoped, if healthy and fit. 🤩🥳🙏
Surprised he went off 14/1 SP in the end. I'm stuck with 7/1, but no complaints. A nice winner to get the new season under way, for real.
5 German entries for this year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe headed by Peter Schiergen trained G1 winners TUENNES and SAMMARCO. The others are Germanys leading 3yr old colt MR HOLLYWOOD, Derby 21 winner SISFAHAN and 3yr old SIRJAN.
How great it would be if it would be declared how tall horses are? You could gauge how they have grown from two to three and whether your eye glued to a screen is right or wrong in guestimating "this looks like a small filly".
