Reminder: my reviews should not be taken as gospel. I am one person with one set of preferences, one set of ears & one set of experiences. You should ALWAYS get multiple opinions on audio gear before buying. Also, the job of gear is to make stuff. So make stuff w/ what you have.
Woah!
@pewdiepie
has joined the fight! We are glad to have you on the
#DontBuyTheYeti
team. Welcome to the fray Pewds. To make this a positive post though, if anyone has purchased the Yeti and wants to improve their sound, here's some advice.
#AudioPSA
I never talk about this stuff, but a few years ago I got sick of being overweight and unhealthy so I made the decision to monitor my diet and start exercising. Day to day I never noticed a difference but seeing an old video the difference is shocking.
I also never noticed a big
PSA: If someone is helping you out with a tech problem, perhaps you shouldn’t be a jerk to them. They could be doing anything else with their time yet they are being generous enough to spend time that they’ll never get back helping you troubleshoot.
It's amazing to see a lot of these television folks who are now broadcasting from home making the same mistake that youtubers were making 10 years ago; thinking that video is more important than audio.
Surprise. That's not true. Audio is more important than video.
This is HUGE for YouTube! Look at the timeline!!! It takes the timestamps from my description and essentially turned them into chapter markers for the video! It shows the title of the section and how much you've completed! AMAAZING!
This is HILARIOUS. Youtube deleted my personal account where I upload nothing that could even come close to violating TOS, and this just so happens to be the account I use to login into podcastage. Podcastage appears to still be up but I can't access it. See ya when I see ya.
Okay, i just got a notification and then I saw something. I commented on one of
@Jack_Septic_Eye
videos, and that comment has more likes than any of the videos I’ve made. Ever. Welp. Yeah.
Apparently TikTok may be banned in the States. Not saying whether or not this is good. What I will say is this: there’s a reason I’ve advocated for having a place online that YOU own that you direct people to. Then if you’re banned or a service shuts down, you don’t disappear.
The number of people who clip and distort their audio while live streaming is INSANE. I made a quick tutorial on how to avoid clipping using only tools available for free in OBS. Full Pod Episode Here:
Hey
@ladygaga
,
it appears you're singing into the wrong side of a Vintage Neumann U47. I have a video on this topic of ensuring you're speaking into the correct side of the mic. Hope it helps. 😭
Don’t compete with other creators, this is a recipe for disaster. Instead compete with yourself from yesterday to provide your audience with a better experience today.
Holy crap. Thank y'all so much for helping me reach 200,000 subs. You're amazing, and I appreciate every single one of you for the support over the last 5 years! Here's to another 5 years of meyelling at you about microphones.
A reason I really like reviewing audio gear is that the lifecycle of many of these products is 10+ years unlike most consumer electronics. Most audio companies make a product that’s intended to last a long time and not require an upgrade in a year or two. Cheers Audio Companies.
Today marks 6 years since my first upload to Podcastage. Thank y’all very much for sticking with me for all these years and letting me yell at you about audio stuff for so long. You’re awesome! I appreya!
I see creators posting about how they feel their hobby content is unimportant now because of what's going on in the world. In dark and depressing times if your hobbies provide an ounce of joy or a second of a distraction, then it's incredibly important.
As a gear channel I know this is insane to say, but GEAR DOESN’T REALLY MATTER. The gear only exists to assist you in conveying an idea whether it’s a video or song. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that the gear is the goal; it’s not. The IDEA is the goal. The GEAR is a tool
This is your monthly reminder that audio is incredibly important for video. Multiple times this week someone has done so much hard work on the thumbnail that I want to watch their video. Then when I click on it the audio is so bad that I leave within 15 seconds.
I got called "Toxic" and "Condescending" for criticizing the demonstration of a microphone in an incorrect setup. I responded to this complaint in this weeks episode of my podcast.
If you’re someone who thinks you’re superior to someone else just because you use a certain set of tools that others don’t like or don’t have access to (I.e. OS, Camera, Mic), shut the f*** up. Thanks. 😘
I am absolutely blown away right now. 150,000 subscribers. Thank y'all so much, you are amazing, and I appreciate your continued support more than I can ever put in to words!
I’m not an influencer 🤮, I’m an informer. I don’t aim to influence people to want x, y, or z. I aim to help people make more informed decisions. Is it a more boring approach, yes, but I find the approach to be more helpful in the long term.
Some people love the SM7b, others hate it. That’s fine.
Some people love the LCT440, others hate it. That’s fine.
Some people love the RE20, and then they talk crap about every other microphone.
Elitism in audio circles is maddening. By shaming someone because they either don’t want to or are unable to invest thousands in audio capture/playback, you come across as an ass. Understand people have different needs/budgets and can still enjoy the hobby.
@podcastage
After careful review, we've confirmed that your channel was mistakenly suspended for violations against our policies on spam. We've corrected this and reinstated your channel. Appreciate your patience!
Dear reuploaders of my videos,
I have a particular set of tools. Tools acquired from YouTube. Tools that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you delete my video now that will be the end of it. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you & I will COPYSTRIKE you.
After watching tons of youtube through a system with an audio visualizer, I've realized that almost no one uses a High Pass Filter. If you are making content and speaking into a microphone, at minimum, add a 50 - 60Hz High Pass Filter to your microphone's audio.
If you're a streamer and your mic distorts, here's a quick fix that's free and will keep you from sounding terrible. I have bonus filter settings on the youtube upload:
Life hack: you don’t need to consume coffee in order to receive it’s benefits and wake up in the morning. You can just spill the coffee all over your desk and peripherals, and that will give you that jolt you need to get going in the morning.
Dudes and dudettes.
@rodemics
is donating $2M worth of gear to NSW schools affected by
#COVID19
so that teachers can teach online classes and sound good while doing it! I just have to give them a round of applause. This is amazing. Let’s highlight the positive stuff.
Today marks 5 years since I uploaded my first review to my channel, which was of a bag. I never would have thought I'd still be making videos 5 years later, so thank you for the support, I wouldn't be here without you. And I'll be yelling at you about audio until the day I die!
This is your quarterly reminder: do not go into debt to buy audio gear. Buy the gear that you can afford and save up for the stuff you want/need. You’ll appreciate it much more, and it’ll feel great not having that monthly bill hanging over your head.
Update: they were quick to uphold the ban. So, I guess this means no more Podcastage because I have no access to it. I just wish I had known that reading public domain stories was a scam.
@TeamYouTube
When I leave my little audio & youtube bubble on twitter and venture out into “twitter proper”, it only takes a minute to realize that there are a lot of people in this world who fell right out of the moron tree and hit every branch on the way down.
Final update: Thanks to my eris from my discord, I was able to sneak in to the brand management section and add a new owner to podcastage! We're back baby!
This may tick off some creators, but I think YOU have an obligation to stop advertising companies that are not reputable. By advertising them you're not only putting your audience's security at risk, but you're putting your OWN security at risk:
FYI: If you’re getting ”free” gear to make a video on, it is not “free” gear. If it takes you 50 hours to make a video in an area that you’re an expert in, that can easily translate to $5,000 of value. Do not underestimate the value of your time.
Dear TV network execs,
This is a picture of what we call “a microphone”. You may benefit from ensuring your employees broadcasting from home know what this is, know how to use it, and have one at home so their broadcasts actually sound good.
#MicMonday
I bought a bunch of cables in 2016 to determine if XLR Cables really made a difference in your recording. It only took me 4 years to make the video. Hope it helps address the topic. This one was a lot of fun to work on!
If you make a prerecorded podcast, and you’re eating on mic within the first 10 minutes of your show, what the hell is going on? Can you not eat before the show? Is the show so uninteresting that you’d rather eat than speak? STOP EATING ON MIC!
I don't think folks will like this, but I went on a 20 minute rant about YouTube's new monetization policy that allows them to monetize channels not in YPP and not pass any revenue to the creator:
Introducing the new SM7dB Dynamic Vocal Microphone. The SM7dB is the same iconic SM7B mic you know and love, now with a custom built-in preamp.
Explore the SM7dB:
This is your quarterly reminder that if you make podcasts or YouTube videos, you do not need to say “You Know?”, “Right?”, or “Listen.” before or after every sentence. This makes you sound unprofessional and as though you don’t really believe what you’re saying.
As an SM7b fan boy, I agree with this tweet. People should do proper research into gear before buying it. The SM7b is not going to be the right choice for everyone. Before investing $400-$1000, spend a few hours researching what you’re buying please. Popular ≠ Correct.
Amazon is cutting commission fees in half for a lot of affiliates. This is why you need to diversify your income streams, and why it's dangerous to rely solely on income streams that you don't control. Also, this will not affect my ability to bring you reviews.
Everyone who’s pissed off about the Mac Pro being $50,000 maxed out. Yeah. That’s expensive. But remember its not for us. Are you pissed off that the Red MONSTRO costs $55,000? Probably not because you know it’s not for us. Do you also yell at planes for being expensive?
I understand that my reviews are essentially free marketing for companies. I also understand that me buying the gear means I’m paying to make videos that market someone’s device. However, me buying it also means I have 100% autonomy on when and how I review it, and what I say.
This should go without saying but when you receive an e-mail about sponsorships, before downloading anything or clicking any links, verify the e-mail address and verify through official communication channels that the e-mail is legitimate.
I was lucky enough to review one of my new favorite mics today, the
@Austrian_Audio
OC818. In my opinion this thing is an instant classic. A perfect mic for a "serious professional" like me. What do y'all think of it?
Oh for Pete's sake. You do not have to trust my opinion. That's why every single one of my videos is filmed using the audio gear I'm reviewing. If you think I'm sleazy salesman then do not trust me. Trust your ears and develop your own opinion with the audio samples provided.
Due to the amount of people who have been thrust into a position where they have to learn to speak into a mic in order to teach remotely or telework, I made a video with 10 tips to get better sound out of your microphone. I hope it helps y’all out:
Please for the love of god, if your spoken word audio comes out of just the Left or Right speaker/headphone, FIX IT before publishing that audio. Put in the slightest amount of effort to get good audio. Golly.
The reason I love reviewing audio gear is because I’m able to help folks decide how they’ll capture their creative outlet. Audio gear doesn’t capture the real world with 100% accuracy, so when picking gear you’re deciding how you want a specific moment in time to be captured.
Hey
@IGN
please do a bit more research before making a video about audio gear. The SM7B should not be used with an XLR to USB cable unless you want to waste $400. Also, it will gain absolutely ZERO benefit from phantom power.
I’m seeing an increase of creators talking about how the gear doesn’t matter, and I’m all about it.
As I’ve said for ages, as long as your audio isn’t distracting or painful to listen to, no one cares.
Learn what you have. Get it to sound as good as you can and make stuff.
I bought one of the first 1,000 SM7’s manufactured by
@shure
in 1973 and compared it to the Modern SM7b. Spoiler alert, they sound SHOCKINGLY differerent.
