I am happy to share our latest pre-print, in which we model grieving as a natural solution to the reinforcement learning problem of adapting to loss. Given the amount of grief in the world these days - we thought it was important to better understand it.

Do you ever feel pulled in different directions, as if there is a tug of war going on inside your head? Our new PNAS suggests one reason why: When we have to balance many needs, having a dedicated sub-agent for each need has practical benefits.

@keithfrankish Distortionism - our mind filters and distorts information about itself, and ends up with what seems like qualia. Key here is that distortions can still contain veridal structure, and also exist on a continuum (mild to severe distortion).

@davidfrum The far right feels safe inside rigid structures, which, like a locked house, exclude some things adaptively (child sexuality) and other things harmfully (strangers/Jews). Structural rigidity that keeps out perceived danger in general is the 3rd variable causing both positions.

@KordingLab I think there is only a partial gap - representations in the brain can be high or low dimensional (i.e. ). Therefore, low-d perturbations should be able to interrogate low-d representations. We lack high-d perturbation techniques other than natural stimuli
