I've just been cheated out of a massive career high - a midweek chart placement next to Paul Weller & Elton John. I'm unspeakably upset and furious. Everyone involved knows the numbers were reported wrong (not by us) and refused to change the chart to be accurate. I have no words
Kind people are asking what they can do to help? Simply: buy the albums by the bands you love. Ignore the billboards. Ignore the big media. People are paying to play all the time and you don't see it. Think for yourself. Question everything.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again - if you’ve bothered to show up for the support act, why not consider shutting your cakehole and seeing if you actually like the sounds they’re making? Especially if they’ve travelled hundreds of miles? If you don’t like it then - cool.
I did it!! 3 miles, nice and slow, lots of walking, but I did ittttttt. I ran. After work, too, when I'm very much a "if I haven't run first thing in the morning, it's not happening" person.
Last time I got a completely independent DIY album into the UK Top 40 (
#24
), the PR company I was working with told me it wasn't a story, and they still weren't able to get me any coverage.
It's happening again minus PR - if you want to write about fan power in 2023 msg me!
MUSIC FANS DID THIS.
This is the sort of dream I never thought could come true. As a completely independent artist, producing music in my home studio and shooting videos in village halls with homemade robot costumes,
Good morning! I want to say thank you for all the lovely album release week support I've experienced on here. I've been hanging around on this platform for nearly 16 years and, though it's changed a lot recently, I'm grateful for my circle of pals. Thanks for being one of them x
Yes, it's being dealt with so that the end of the week chart is accurate, but this was the big moment when I could show what fan power can achieve. I'm so angry that my supporters' generous contributions aren't reflected in this midweek,
@officialcharts
It only took 6 hours for someone to write and tell me they prefer my old music. Guess what, it's still there, and I'll continue making whatever the fuck music I like. I don't need/want/expect everyone to love what I make, but there are plenty of other songs to listen to! BYE
What the fuck else am I expected to do - I wrote an album I'm so proud of and wonderful music fans backed me. I jumped through every hoop required of an indie label to play this chart game, to show what we're all made of. And then this. A disgrace.
What a debut! 🤖
Obey Robots (
@rat_ned
and
@penfriendrocks
) celebrate their first-ever Official Albums Chart entry as a duo with One in a Thousand 💿
Your brand-new chart is here:
12 years ago today I found out Q Magazine had wasted half a page of their print publication criticising my second solo album.
I'm still standing, and am recording my 8th album.
Keep going x
This happened yesterday and I'm still processing it!
NUMBER ONE independent album "One In A Thousand" by OBEY ROBOTS is available directly from my shop on snow white vinyl, gatefold CD and cassette, with beautiful hardback lyric/photo/story books and more ❤️❤️

Waking up to the new reality of my album being in the charts has been bloody lovely, I have to say.
Just got told "Exotic Monsters" is
#10
in the sales chart (that's minus streaming) which is a testament to people investing in music. Thank you!
It was a bit of a faff to put together, but my towering pile of synths now have a lovely home on this Jasper's stand. Hooray! (I have an extra pair of holders on order for my tape recorder, pictured bottom right.)
Legacy Blue Tick person here.
I know some people think very little of those who have signed up for Twitter Blue. I get it. But I use this platform to try and share the things I make, and I noticed my reach etc had completely bombed in recent months.
It felt like I was wasting
I know basically no-one sees my tweets any more, but if by some magic you do see this, please click on my links on my Twitter bio to explore the music, writing and videos I share.
More coming soon xo

WOW! Thank you! xxx
Got told in a live review today that I shouldn’t introduce my left wing political song as such b/c “both the left and the right like music”. My song is about hating the right wing press and the Tory government. Fuck both those things & fuck people telling me what to say on stage.
If any music journalists out there want a story - HIYAAAAAA. I even make good music too! Let's get this story out - it's so fucked up that we can work this hard and make this much of an impact and still get shafted at the last hurdle.
Gotta say I am feeling the difference between legacy blue tick and no blue tick. It's quite a lot quieter round here. Or I'm suddenly more scroll-past-able 😂
Whatever. If you do see this, HELLO, I am wishing you well!
This is when the big label machine starts kicking in and our DIY release has to contend with all sorts of tactics, from price-drops to "buy-again" pleas.
I'm so thankful for all your support so far. If you want to cast a vote for indie music you know what to do.

5 years of wedded happiness and nearly 9 years since we got together - wow.
I'd honestly given up on the idea of "the one" / soul mates etc, deciding that the Hollywood / poetic notions of love were overblown and I was destined to be a solitary character for the rest of my life.
My careers advisor at school said I could "probably" be a secretary. I did work experience at the local bus station as an "information assistant", basically telling people what time the buses were due (pre-smartphones but not pre-eyes).
Now I make my own music full-time :)
The Government have left many musicians completely high and dry through the pandemic (I have, thankfully, received nominal SEISS but not enough to survive on); now they're stealing hope for future EU touring. MAKE SOME NOISE

I've been feeling very tired, sad and overwhelmed lately, unable to go outside much, unable to exercise or eat healthily. Today I'm proud of the small steps I've taken to turn the corner, and I made this video to talk about the future
I haven't felt this sad in such a long time.
Hugs to everyone else feeling it.
Just so sad and can't think what to do about it. Just have to sit with it, I suppose. Try not to let it define everything. But it does, doesn't it, when you feel this way.
Bla.
Love xo
I log on here every day around this time to have a quick look and see if I feel like saying anything. Most days I type something into the little box then delete it.
Today I thought I should at least say hi.
Hi!
It's freelance job hunting time!
I'm a very experienced audio producer/podcaster / videographer/editor / comms/social video person. Based in Bristol UK, fully kitted out with my own equipment plus a car and clean licence, and very happy to work ad hoc and remotely.
Let's talk!
If you’re someone who chats incessantly the entire time someone is on stage, I hope you realise you’re not even giving yourself a chance of discovering something new. Meditating through my set has become a handy skill. Thanks to the many respectful and appreciative people x
My album is
#47
in the midweek charts!
I need YOU! My totally fan powered album is powering up the UK charts - unthinkable for an indie artist with no manager/label/agent. If you haven't bought it yet, please do - and if you have, please share this post!
PEOPLE - if you've ever wanted to help a 100% indie artist do something unthinkable PLEASE buy my album - there's a very real chance of it climbing up from
#47
and charting but only if you get behind it. It's really good I promise!! Here's how to help:
Well. You amazed me again last night with your outpouring of support. Thank you.
The numbers still aren't quite accurate but news just in is that "Exotic Monsters" is now at
#16
in the pop charts! I'll never get my
#12
midweek back, but onwards is the only way (continued...)

Third run of the week done kapowwww! Nice reason to drag myself out of bed early to miss the megaheat, and now I have the whole day to enjoy with a smile on my face 😔 * waves to fellow

Album release day is here. It's peculiar to know this piece of work has flown into so many peoples' lives already, that our songs are finally being listened to (perhaps right now!).
Here's "One In A Thousand"
So many feelings around this. Relief. Hope. Excitement. Gratitude. Also sleepiness - what a week it's been. Album stuff aside, I'm just looking forward to being able to see my family soon for the first time in 15 months. Thank you thank you NHS ❤️❤️ ❤️
We got played on
@BBC6Music
on album release day! THANK YOU
@steve_lamacq
- passionate music lovers championing outsider art are my favourite people.
PS reading
@tracey_thorn
's books a few years ago gave me the nudge to keep making albums. Appearing next to
@ebtg
means A LOT.
Hi, I'm Laura!
My latest indie rock album is here:
I have deep conversations with fellow artists here
I share videos here
And you can support my work here - thank you! 🖤
I remember being played "Ghost Town" in my GCSE music class and talking through why it was so brilliant. It was a life changing lesson for a young person who didn't yet know what she could become.
What a band, what an artist, what a legacy.
RIP Terry Hall x
Ageing is a gift. I'm 42 in June. In my 30s I never said my age online or in interviews; I thought I'd be harshly judged for not "making it" earlier. When I turned 40 I realised I didn't care any more, so I talk about it. But *every time* someone argues and says it can't be true.
She's back! I've been at the bottom bit of a mental big dipper lately, but I finally found my running mojo down the back of the sofa and now I feel FRESH. My sweet new tee from
@runningpunks
helped a lot! Happy
#virtualrunclub
to all my fellow punks xo
Update to yesterday, I'm just going to turn comments off on the song pages of my website because some people don't understand it's not a reviews website. Again, you don't have to like the songs I make but I have zero interest in you telling me so ON MY OWN WEBSITE DAGNABBIT.
Big day: I am finally unsubscribing from Zoopla property alert emails. Me and my new house are now going steady. Fingers, toes and paws crossed this works out...
In the 12 years between these two photos being taken I moved city (London to Bristol), recorded and released six albums and shared a lot of photos and words on the internet!
As I prepare to move from Bristol to Nottingham in a few weeks, I'm holding a house clearance sale of
UNBELIEVABLE. Solidarity with

I had an accident while running this morning and would like to just ask that if you ever see someone taking a tumble crossing a road, you maybe think about stopping to see if that person lying in a bleeding, crumpled heap is OK before walking/driving away. Cheers.
Today is the last day of the week where my album "Exotic Monsters" was
#24
in the Official Charts, and I'm still blown away by the support of the music fans who made that happen.
So, I just wanted to say thank you! Thank you.
If you haven't heard it yet:
This very lovely thing happened earlier. Much love to
@Tim_Burgess
- I hope you can join us tomorrow to listen to "Exotic Monsters". Because the music is what matters xx
This whole thing was meant to demonstrate our personal power - mine and everyone who supports my work. I feel so fucking powerless right now and it's dreadful.
One year ago today me &
@rat_ned
put an album out called "One In A Thousand" under the name Obey Robots.
Music fans put it in the Official UK Album Chart at
#14
, and we were
#1
in the Indies!
Numbers like those are very nice, but I'd love to hear what the album means to you.
Drumroll.....I spoke to
@julianahatfield
about finding creative freedom in limitations and sensitivity as a superpower (inspired by hearing
@garbage
and
@skinskinny
talking) and it was GREAT.

JH's new album "Blood" is out NOW on
@laundromat13
Just learning about Tina Bell and her band Bam Bam, written out of grunge history by white dudes claiming it for themselves - thanks
@FeralFive
for sharing this
I'll share my reply here in case anyone else was considering trying to ruining my day with a similarly bitter message 🤯
I will defend our bubble of love and support til the end of time.
It's a peculiar trait of Some People* on the Internet to listen to a song you share and tell you how they think it should have been done. Peculiar indeed.
The song is done. I made it sound how I wanted. I made those decisions. Make your own song that sounds how you want!

Oh hello! I'm Laura aka Penfriend and it's an absolute dream to host this listening party for my new album "Exotic Monsters" - out last Friday!
Thanks so much
@Tim_Burgess
for this invitation, it means a lot. "Weirdo" is in my all-time Top 10!!
#timstwitterlisteningparty
Whatever the teatime results, I know victory is ours. Rat and I made music we love and shared it with YOU without trickery. I celebrated at lunch with a very rare, very large drink and am now cuddling up with Team Dog at home. Waves to you from all 10 of our paws xo
This Very Good Boy left us today. His name was Harry, he was my much-missed pooch Mister Benji's best bud from puppyhood, he lived with my parents and he was very lovely. Cuddle your dogs (if they like cuddles) for me tonight pls.
Today is getting my shit together to record most of an album by the end of the month day.
The Obey Robots LP is happening, the first record I’ll have ever made without my Benjidog sitting / snoozing by my side. Now we’ll find out if they were his songs all along…
