A fine of €1m a day sounds a lot but goes to show how much leverage the Commission has over MS by withholding RRF grants. Even if Poland were to refuse to implement the ECJ judgment for a year, the sanction would be €365m - a fraction of the €23.9bn at stake under the RRF.

At the end of the day, today has been a delightful surprise on how well the EU is working: Not only did the EU top job selection go incredibly smoothly but VdL, a Spitzenkandidat, was re-elected with a much wider margin than 2019 and did not even need the votes of the far-right.
