For all you legislators who pay lip service to doing something about this, look in the mirror. My understanding is that judges are not allowed to revoke for his more recent charges or failure to pay. So, basically, probation conditions are just a suggestion and mean nothing.

In my daughter's case, we were told in so many words that we were lucky he served any time at all. She was on a ventilator for 16 days. She is disabled and has struggled with suicidal thoughts since the crash. This IS our justice system.

Before the crash, Anya graduated from college in 6 semesters, with a 4.0, while fighting cancer. She was a National Merit Scholar. And she still tries EVERY SINGLE DAY. It is heart-breaking. But sure, 45 days, no restitution. No revoked probation. It's justice theater.

That charge, criminal vehicular operation - bodily harm, a gross misdemeanor, was important because it was the only one that captured on any level the damage he had done to her. He did plead guilty and got <lol> 45 DAYS in the workhouse.

I've seen all MDP body camera, traffic camera and other video of that night, including, yes, the crash itself. Horrifying. He lied repeatedly that night. He never apologized when he plead guilty. He has never acknowledged what he did.

Eventually, the driver was charged with things like reckless driving, careless driving, driving without a license, etc. When traffic cameras were checked, it was clear that he'd run the previous red light and had not braked. He was eventually charged and pled guilty to 1 charge.

About that restitution. You can only request lost pay not covered by other means before a disability determination and physical items (apple watch that was crushed and clothing destroyed). The restitution (less than $20K) does not begin to cover the lifelong devastation.

To this day, Anya's life is precarious. While she was on a ventilator and with a feeding tube, she was unable to take a vital cancer med for her ultrarare cancer. That cancer had been 100% in control before the crash. Afterward, she had a recurrence, with additonal mutations.

What an unbelievable lack of security from @instagram . My daughter's account was hacked and by the time she got the alert that the email had been changed, the person had already changed the name of the account.

Today, after 16 days on a ventilator, 19 days in ICU and 28 days at HCMC, Anya was discharged to an acute rehab center. Her arduous recovery after being hit by an SUV while crossing Hennepin Avenue will continue for many months.
