Amazing detective work by Bengt Legnell tracked down the oldest Spoon-billed Sandpiper in the world; the very bird used by Linné to describe the sp. in 1764! From King Adolf Fredrik of Sweden's collection - seems it was collected in Siam, now Thailand - it's now at Uppsala Uni.
Today Russia's migratory birds lost their greatest champion & many people who care for those birds lost a great friend & inspiration. RIP Evgeny Syroechkovskiy. Without him the Spoon-billed Sandpiper would likely be extinct. There'd be no Arctic Migratory Bird Initiative. Etc...

Robert Gillmor was among the wildlife art greats & kindest, gentlest of men. Many of his images have become iconic, incl. those he produced for British Birdwatching Fair. This, in 2012, went on to have a life of its own, instrumental in the big advances in saving the Yellow Sea.
