WONDERFUL NEWS from French Council of State: it's modified the decree allowing hunting of 6000 Curlews in the 2019/20 season, fixing the quota at ZERO to meet France's obligations under #EUBirdsDirective & @unep_aewa , with immediate effect. No more curlews to be shot this season!

Poor, poor River Cam. 1 of most disappointing swims we've had & our 1st in UK for 8 weeks. Should've been divine on this gorgeous summer evening, snorkelling 500m up from Braseley Bridge to Byron's Pool, water 17.4°C (air 23.8). But shockingly, visibility almost nil. #MySwim 🧵1/5

Amazing detective work by Bengt Legnell tracked down the oldest Spoon-billed Sandpiper in the world; the very bird used by Linné to describe the sp. in 1764! From King Adolf Fredrik of Sweden's collection - seems it was collected in Siam, now Thailand - it's now at Uppsala Uni.

Robert Gillmor was among the wildlife art greats & kindest, gentlest of men. Many of his images have become iconic, incl. those he produced for British Birdwatching Fair. This, in 2012, went on to have a life of its own, instrumental in the big advances in saving the Yellow Sea.

Sad news. The immensely talented, kind and brilliant bird artist Robert Gillmor died this afternoon, after a long illness. Many of us grew up with his artwork in magazines, and on book covers. A lovely man, who’ll be much missed. RIP Robert. Sympathy to Susan, Emily & Thomas.

Not only America has sapsuckers! Here's a Rufous-bellied Woodpecker (in Feb, Himalayan foothills, Pangot, Utterkhand, India) making rows of sap wells; like American sapsuckers some populations migrate. At least 3 other Eurasian woodpeckers suck sap. @Britnatureguide @nehaa_sinha

Appalled at poor water visibility (30cm) & patch of scum in River Little Ouse (a chill 7.1°C) down from County Bridge Weir, Euston, despite flowing thro' a reed bed. Could this chicken foot & location of Crown Chicken plant at Snarehill Farm just upstream explain it? #MySwim 1/4

At the Worlington end of my River Lark Swim delighted to find the River Water Crowfoot (Ranunculus fluitans) still in flower, spangling the long tresses gilded by the evening sun. I swim upstream first. It's then a lot faster going back down! #chalkstreams #WestSuffolk 2/22

Yikes a Pike! Floating briskly back down 850m of the lovely Lark at Worlington nearly crashed into this mighty "freshwater shark", who, nonetheless smaller than me, was reluctant to give way; got to admire the gall of this handsome lord of the river. #MySwim #Chalkstreams 🧵1/18

Astonished to find the 1.5km of River Lark from Mildenhall to Worlington includes glorious prime #chalkstream , silken with River Water Crowfoot. I indulged in it sans wetsuit (H2O 19°C) the last 2 eves, 1st entering top left. Here's a cooling🧵on the wonders found. #MySwim 1/22

Actually, I saw perhaps only 10 adult Brown Trout - all 30-45 cm long, on my way up the River Gadder & all were shy - perhaps due to resident otters, or because tricky to navigate the obstacle course quietly. Some of the quite abundant parr were tame, as was this small Pike. 3/13

Another extraordinary thing in the River Gadder at Gooderstone, the like of which I've never seen, are these colonies of what are reminiscent of marine worms or worm snails but perhaps are a type of caddis fly larvae that drill into wood? Am mystified. #Norfolk #Riverflies 7/13

Here's a dark little Brown Trout parr in a favoured spot, clean flinty gravels downstream of one of many fallen trees & other natural woody debris in River Gadder chalk stream. Stream edges lush with Greater Water Parsnip as the water runs clear & coolish 14.9°C (air 18.5). 4/13
