this is healthy & working as intended. The Ethereum PoS consensus mechanism doesn't overpay for security like PoW did. If there are more than enough validators, low yield encourages you to put your assets elsewhere validators are in service of Ethereum, not the other way around

Forking repos is good. It's why open source is great, cuz we can iterate and improve on work. But prolly best to say "hey, we're a clone of this other protocol, & here's where we improved" rather than wait for the community to start recognizing vestigial code you forgot to remove

Decentralization is the key feature of blockchains. The purpose of the majority of research proposals rn is how to maintain that decentralization If you're advocating for sacrificing it for efficiency, it's probably bc you expect to be on the winning end of that centralization

@drjasper_eth This is going to happen anyways. MaxEB is the least controversial initial change. Long term, SSF already implicitly accepts, and rainbow staking responds, to the reality that solo staking is simply not sustainable. Smaller still big val set is fine.

Mercenary types framing values of decentralization as "luxury beliefs" in favor of scaling for narrative points is what ultimately kills the value of the chain. I don't think they even know it. This view is so short term Same feeling as optimizing for quarter-over-quarter profit

We can no longer afford to eat the cost of these luxury beliefs. Solo staking in a place where you do not have appropriate bandwidth imposes an externality on the network. If Ethereum doesn't win, the world looks much more dystopian than a world where Ethereum sacrifices a few

Today's ACD discussed target / max blob increases & spent time debating whether complaints about bandwidth constraints are too anecdotal I very much feel bandwidth constraints on *both* networks where I run nodes. The people who let me use their networks complain that it

@nixorokish Bandwidth is my limiting factor. Hardware is cheap; $45-50/month is stretching affordability for my family and also anecdotally in r/ethstaker bandwidth is the bottleneck due to availability in specific locations, e.g. Berlin. Time to walk the walk if decentralisation is a goal.

I honestly think if someone set out to clone @Rocket_Pool and said "We're forking and I think we can do better", people would watch it with anticipation and cheer on the competition (I definitely would). But doing it all sneaky-like feels a little weird

This was contentious! Lots of conversation about whether solo stakers can handle bandwidth increases that would come w increasing blob counts imo, we're right up against limits. Any increase in bandwidth should be heavily data-backed & mitigated w EIPs that decrease bandwidth

PSA: maybe it's not well understood but if a majority client has a bug and you're running that client, your penalities will be higher than a minority client bug situation - and, unlike a minority bug situation, those penalities will grow the longer the situation drags on

here's an extension of the ethstaker blog post i made a couple weeks ago - nailing down what we mean by "solo staker" and what other kinds of stakers there are some of these can be mixed and matched, too! e.g. you can be a home solo staker

@tomxeth if you'd asked a person in 1908 to imagine superior communication methods, they would've lacked imagination too. it's damn near imposs to fathom how far tech can go, unless you're Isaac Asimov or the creators of Star Trek everything we think of as revolutionary will be boring
