And now the #strawban turns to "no single-use plastics, period." Aside from straws (which are a medical necessity for some), there are MANY medical supplies that only come as single-use plastic. When you say this, you mean no more catheters, so people who need them can urinate.

I have not seen a more apt description of how U.S. history was taught in K-12 in my district (in SWMO) in the '80-'00s, when I was there as first a student, and then a long-term sub. It also occurs to me that this is a reason why so few in 2020 knew anything about the 1918 flu.

@mattbc I was #MedicallyAnnoying the entire time I was in school, K-through-MA. Such a huge part of accepting and understanding my disability in the past several years has been recognizing that I have always been chronically ill, even when no one would acknowledge it.

@ArtAporia @unicornthorn @barrydeutsch Giving unasked for advice is rarely just about being helpful helpful. It's about stroking the ego of the advice-giver, about their discomfort with you being as you are (so they need to "fix" you), and a lot of other things. People have a right to be angered or annoyed by that.

I wish more people understood, though, that plenary adoptees are not the only kind of adoptees. Kinship adoptees do exist. We are subject to all of the same adoption laws as any other adoptee, including the denial of our parentage and change in birth certificate.

The course I took in U.S. government in undergrad was better about covering this period, but I think that was largely due to my professor also specializing in Latin American politics and being an unapologetic Marxist (which is also why he was denied tenure at my alma mater).

Y'all should read this thread. In my experience, the stories adults tell kids about "difficult" subjects like relinquishment mostly have the effect of letting kids know that the adults are uncomfortable, and the kids shouldn't ask them questions or tell the adults their fears.

When I hear about people with chronic, but not "life-threatening," illnesses being stuck on waiting lists, I don't have to imagine what that might be like. It's years of getting only basic, symptom-based treatment, while the underlying condition sits there growing worse.

The way the current system works harms ALL adoptees. But different types of adoptees are harmed in different ways. I've felt the need in adoptee spaces to diminish the harm adoption has caused to me because I had some of the things that were taken away from plenary adoptees.
