Absolutely elated to announce that I won the Future Investigators in NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology (
#FINESST
)!!! Time to explore new worlds with BARBIE and KEN :)
Proud to announce that I won the Dean’s Award for Excellence in AJEDI Service! At least someone is doing the (unpaid!!) work that the university should be doing 👀
Today, a guy at a train station said I didn’t look like a physics major because I wasn’t a man. I took great pleasure in letting him know that no one seemed to care while I was working on telluric contamination for a NASA mission concept study.

All these well wishes are so wonderful, and this is such a huge step forward for me💚 now in the next 2.5 years I have to write a thesis and defend to get my doctorate - can’t wait for all of you to follow the rest of my journey!
Seeing as I have some new followers, I thought it was high time to introduce myself! My name is Natasha, I am an NSF GRFP fellow studying exoplanet atmospheres. I’m also trying to make a go of the science communication thing - so here’s me communicating :)
Let me try my intro again. Hi, my name is Natasha, I am an NSF Fellow, and I am a PASSIONATE advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion. I will not stand for misogyny and objectification on my page, when it has happened far too much in my career. I am a scientist, not an item.
Resubmitted BARBIE1 with referee edits. Get ready to learn about biosignature detectability all in pink! Here's a sneak peek of my acknowledgements section special mentions. This

Just broke through the research wall I’ve been stuck at for a while - turns out it was a tiny mistake that radiated outwards. I am so lucky to have such supportive advisors that helped me find the mistake and fix it without once saying anything negative 🥹
I got a 21% on a physics exam once. Also had to retake two of my qualifying exams.
I’m still here. I’m an NSF Fellow in a PhD program preparing my thesis. And I’m fighting the inequity of standard examination structures as I do it!
Flex your lowest academic low score.
To remind us that almost everyone fails at some point in life but it isn't the end of the road. Just a memory in the end.
Mine was 27/100 in Engineering Math 2, just a year after I'd scored 99 in 12th boards. Much needed kick in my butt.
Hi yall! I am developing an open resource for applying to post-docs as I go through the process. Please drop any fellowships or positions that are open every year in the comments, and I'll add them to this public spreadsheet! Field specific also welcome :)
Rainy days on campus 🍂 maybe I didn’t feel like a scientist today. Maybe my code didn’t work and I couldn’t fix it. But I got Starbucks with friends today. We talked and laughed and reminisced. Today, I felt like a human who is loved, and that is enough.
Let’s talk about failure. I have failed so many times in my short career - many, many times. And some days it’s easy to pop back up and try again. Other days - not so much. But I’ll be damned if I let myself stay down instead of trying again. Sometimes it just takes longer to do.
I just found out my application for the APS Advanced Graduate Leadership was accepted! Fully funded conference about advancing women and gender minorities into leadership. Ya girl is gonna learn to be even more powerfullll 🦾
If you liked my BARBIE poster, get a close up look AND read more about the process of designing it here! I’m so lucky to work with a group that is emphatically supportive and gives me the space to imbue my personality into my work 💗🪐

In this field abusers are protected, validated, and have careers while those that suffered at their hands get beaten down. And people wonder why there’s a mass exodus of academia? All this week has shown is the utter disregard for ECR health and careers. All I want to do is weep.
I really don’t see myself staying in the field after this week. Like how do I just move forward knowing that there are professors out there who are posting in slack groups about how GM’s inclusion is valid. This is so triggering for SA victims and you guys just don’t care
“Corgi-sized meteor as heavy as 4 baby elephants hit Texas” (!)? either I am seriously mis-informed about the size of a corgi, or that meteor was made of something VERY odd…
Talk is DONE! Thank you to everyone that came - and stayed through the 10 minutes of technological disaster in the middle 😂 also shout out to Todd Henry for being the best session chair EVER and bringing chocolate for all the speakers 🥹
I’m really tired of constantly having the urge to apologize. Almost every email starts with “I’m so sorry for -“ when really? I’m not sorry. I’m oversubscribed, busy, and try to maintain a personal life, and I’m NOT sorry for the delay in response.
My paper is officially on arXiv!! Characterizing and Mitigating Telluric Absorption in Precise Radial Velocities II: A Study of an M2 Type Star -
I think we found some pretty interesting results. THREAD 🧵:
The mental toll it takes to constantly be on guard for yourself and others is gigantic. We need to stop making it ECRs problems and simply ban abusers. Take a firm stance for ONCE
are people in my field aware of the fact that ECRs spend half of their time at conferences actively dodging abusers? leaving sessions before problematic people give their talks, asking chairs to monitor questions from certain people, it is literally constant
Realized that a portion of my calculations is wrong...and I have to redo the last three months of research. Thus is science - at least it isn't a complete rehaul!
And then the two parties switched platforms between 1860 and 1936, largely because of the influence of William Jennings Bryan. If you’re going to talk about politics, make sure that you’re speaking with accuracy, and not misdirection.
Facts:
100% of Republicans voted to free slaves. 23% of Democrats did
94% of Republicans voted to give former slaves citizenship. 0% of Democrats did
100% of Republicans voted to give freed slaves voting rights. 0% of Democrats did
Items I found while cleaning my NASA Goddard office: A moldy coffee cup
A cassette only boombox WITH cassette
Three (3) coffee makers - none working
& an Amazon receipt for 3 astronaut baby onesies. From 2015.
BUT!! I have a real NASA office!! With my stuff!!

From

: The genocide in Gaza demands our attention and our action. As astronomers and members of the global scientific community, we cannot ignore the immense suffering and devastation inflicted upon our colleagues.
I wish I was more surprised that ECR data was used to prop up a known abuser. I wish I was more surprised that it’s ECRs speaking up and putting their careers on the line. Every senior person that isn’t speaking out and taking action right now is a coward and an accomplice.

Considering how many email services also have the feature where you can hit tab and it will AUTOFILL the correct name in, there’s a very conscious choice being made to disrespect the receiver
I’m starting a new project soon, and the amount of stuff I don’t know is DAUNTING and exciting at the same time! Just have to avoid the tendrils of mega imposter syndrome while I work through a mountain of literature…
I have a professor that takes attendance for a grade, but the only thing we do is watch hour-long videos. My man. My dude. Just email me the video so I can ignore it in my room rather than in a classroom.
Girl just walked into my class, looked around for a second, went “nope. Not doing this today.” Turned around, and left. I’ve never related to someone more tbh
So do I learn that the Moon is a part of Mars in graduate school or is that something that should’ve been covered in Introduction to Astrophysics? 🤦🏽♀️
For all of the money we are spending, NASA should NOT be talking about going to the Moon - We did that 50 years ago. They should be focused on the much bigger things we are doing, including Mars (of which the Moon is a part), Defense and Science!

I read that the line traces your location and supports engagement in “nonconsensual active rescue” i.e. the cops can be sent to your location and potentially involuntarily hospitalize you (). I’m being wary until I do further research!
