According to research by Lifeway Research, 98% of pastors believe their church is a safe haven for abuse survivors
Research also demonstrates only 8% of survivors of clergy sexual abuse find their church to have been helpful after the abuse took place.
That's a staggering gap.
So friends, don't listen to the voices on the margins. The SBC is growing healthier, not sicker. We still have a ways to go. But you can know that SBC isn't a synonym for apostasy. It's a synonym for brothers and sisters in a different lane heading the same direction as you. End/
@griffingulledge
Thanks for this, Griffen. I have a PhD in biblical counseling. I also did postdoctoral work in trauma counseling in order to become a better biblical counselor. The two are not at odds.
After 7 years in Charlotte, the Brooks fam will be making a significant transition this spring! I’m grateful for my time
@RTSCharlotte
, and I’m excited for future ministry
@SEBTS
. It is good to be back serving my fellow Southern Baptists this way.
Q7: So you're saying this was a good convention:
A: Yes! This convention wasn't conservatism vs. liberalism. It was neo-fundamentalism vs. conservatism. Our convention affirmed that we want to purse racial reconciliation, support the lives of the unborn, 18/
Stuff like this is usually worth ignoring. But about 70% of my students are female, many on Twitter. So ladies, let me just tell you - this is absolute nonsense. And for every ridiculous comment like this, there are 10 of us who are overjoyed that you're doing what you're doing.
And we contracted Guideposts to investigate because of their expertise, not their stance on Pride. This is actually part of the Reformed approach to life - we may learn and be helped by those outside the faith. Neo-Fundamentalism demands absolute separation, which we rejected.15/
Those claiming we have gone "liberal" have a very different definition of "liberal" than theological liberalism. This new liberalism speaks more to how Christians engage with the world than anything else.5/
Q2: Did the SBC elect a "woke extremist" as president?
A: No. We elected a small-town pastor from Texas (Bart Barber). He ran on a platform of charity towards those we disagree with, supporting the sexual abuse task force, and that the SBC can be diverse yet unified. 5/
I'm walking away from this convention encouraged about the direction of the SBC - and I say that as someone thoroughly reformed, complementarian, and conservative. 21/
Friends, my wife has been suffering greatly for almost a year after a surgery gone wrong. Tomorrow morning she has an exploratory procedure with a new set of multidisciplinary specialists. Please pray they are able to identify what's gone wrong and how to address it.
Some churches have women who are titled "Pastor of Music," for instance. However, they are not elders. Indeed, those churches may have only one elder - the lead pastor. So what do you do? We're figuring that out. The issue is one of imprecise terminology, not of liberalism. 9/
Oh, and one last thing.
8. Did a messenger really raise a motion in front of 15,000 people to add a fellowship meal to the Executive Committee calendar?
In a word, yes. Baptists gonna Baptist.
and sought close association with those who protected abusive pastors. Our convention voted 60/40 for Bart (
@bartbarber
) for a reason. Look through his feed and see if he seems like a "woke extremist." 7/
be charitable to those who disagree. And most important, we passed the recommendations of the sexual abuse task force to begin addressing our denomination's cruel treatment of survivors over the last 2 decades. 19/
This 1984 article by Jay Adams is making the rounds again. In truth, there are several more like it by him dealing with other topics such as emotional abuse, "wife-beating," etc. A 🧵discussing this article:
Q1: Did the SBC go liberal?
A: No. All 6 of our seminaries affirm inspiration and inerrancy. All 4 of our presidential candidates affirm inspiration and inerrancy, deity of Christ, biblical miracles, bodily resurrection, virgin birth. 4/
Almost a decade ago my wife and I visited an art installation where you were supposed to write on a wall something you wanted to do in your lifetime to benefit humanity. I wrote, “Write a book worth reading.”
Incredible to see this arrive on the porch today.
Listened to two sermons by Tim Keller today during an afternoon run and was struck by how much he’s talking to the people in the congregation. Every word is focused on how God’s truth connects to their daily questions, struggles, and practices.
Q5: Did the SBC endorse LGBT+ lifestyles?
A: No. We adopted a resolution declaring them sinful. The issue is that our legal counsel and investigative partners are national Pride-affirming entities. However, we employ Christian lawyers from that firm.
Life can change in an instant. A good reminder of that today. 8 point buck straight into the driver's window while on the highway. Car's totaled, but I avoided any major injury. Thankful for the Lord's protection.
And I say that as a thoroughgoing complementarian. And it's important to remember that Presby denoms like the EPC have ordained women without plunging into apostasy. We have two ordained EPC ministers at
@RTSCharlotte
. Again, not an issue of liberalism but of words. 10/
and advocating for homicide charges for abortive mothers (without any reference made to fathers).
Most in our convention are traditional pro-life advocates, seeking to end the evil of abortion. There's no drift here. 17/
Q6: Did the SBC endorse abortion?
A: No. A growing vocal minority has adopted the "abolitionist" position instead of the "pro-life" position. Abolitionism rejects halfway measures like fetal pain bills for "normalizing" certain types of abortion 16/
You just can't read the New Testament with unencumbered eyes and come to the conclusion that "God has staked everything on [males]."
Male and female are God's image. And God's not going to consider one half of his image bearers to be bystanders in his plan to save the world.
Excited for this article to publish March 21.
Thesis: This article will argue that biblical counselors of necessity incorporate material drawn from domains of knowledge outside of Scripture, thereby requiring biblical counseling to establish its own robust theory of integration
Coming to an academic journal near you in Spring 2024 (or at least an academic journal accessible by you). Excited to have this piece be released out into the wild!
In counseling domestic violence cases, we err if we only look at impact to determine if a marriage is violent. For instance, if a husband throws a phone at his wife's head with the full intention of hurting her, but misses, violence has occurred.
@aimeebyrdhwt
Even in theological disagreement, Christians ought not treat one another this way. And I especially mean Christian men should not treat women this way. Ever.
Tonight my wife submitted her final paper for certification through
@ABCounselors
. It's been wonderful to watch her diligently seek to equip herself, and the training has been fantastic. Really proud of her, and excited to see how the Lord uses her to help his people.
Q3: Did the SBC endorse female pastors?
A: Yes and No. Look, SBC polity is a mess. Unlike Presby denoms, we have all kinds of different governing structures (and I don't think that's healthy...but that would be a digression). 8/
Unless you've had your head in the sand, it's no secret that the SBC Annual Meeting happened this week in Anaheim. Every year, there are countless hot takes and they're tough to sift through. I am the one voting faculty member
@ReformTheoSem
who is in the SBC. 2/
So if you're looking for a summary from some one who 1) Is winsomely reformed and 2) Was in the room when it happened, please give this thread a perusal. My goal here is to clear up confusion, and what better way to do that then offer a Q&A, WSC-style set of tweets. 3/
Week
#2
of our newly redesigned counseling PhD seminars
@sebts
. This week I’m teaching Theological Studies for the Practice of Counseling.
Today we’re looking at the relationship between theology and the sciences, and worldview formation.
Thanks to
@LondonLyceum
for publishing my book review of Heath Lambert's new book, Biblical Counseling and Common Grace. I hope this contribution advances the discussion surrounding the relationship between theology and counseling.
Just submitted the title for my academic lecture at
@RTSCharlotte
's coming fall convocation, "Herman Bavinck, Patron Saint of Biblical Counselors: How an Old Dutch Theologian Helps Us Make Sense of Biblical Sufficiency."
#BibleCn
Yesterday students from
@RTSCharlotte
presented me with a check to help defray costs from my car accident. What an I credible thing! I was struck by the number of $20 gifts, anonymous and not. The small gifts of broke seminary students.
Ed Litton affirms orthodox trinitarian doctrine and is vouched for by some of our most careful theologians. We can choose to indulge in a hermeneutic of suspicion (which is driven usually by other factors) or a hermeneutic of humility that seeks to clarify and then accepts edits.
What is Redemptive Counseling / Clinically Informed Biblical Counseling? How is it different than nouthetic counseling? How is it different than integrationism?
My colleagues and I SEBTS are happy to release this paper to explain.
I'm so excited to teach the first seminar in our redesigned counseling PhD program
@SEBTS
. If you're looking for a robust, biblically faithful, clinically-informed biblical counseling degree, this is it.
"[A] commitment to the sufficiency of Scripture does not hermetically seal the mind to all further input or interaction. Such commitment is a standpoint on the world, not a blindfold to the world."
This quote from David Powlison is really important for understanding sufficiency.
I really miss David Powlison's voice. So wise and helpful:
"We affirm that wise counseling requires ongoing practical theological labor in order to understand Scripture, people, and situations...
My journal article “Everybody Integrates: Biblical Counseling and the Use of Extrabiblical Material@ just published in the Southeastern Theological Review!
While we disagreed on elections, resolutions, etc. we rejoiced to be together. The things we hold in common are far greater than the things we disagree upon. Please don’t listen to a vocal, factious minority.
Women were the first witnesses to the resurrection, Phoebe is a "servant of the church," Priscilla taught Apollos the word, Lydia was Paul's first convert and served as his patron in Philippi.
Watching new Southern Baptist missionaries be commissioned. Half are sillouhettes, as they're heading to areas where it's best for their identities to remain unknown. These are phenomenal men and women.
3 years ago I was in Kyiv teaching at a seminary and the plan was once for me to return just a few weeks from now to teach again.
Praying not just for a country, but for the names and faces of friends and colleagues. God have mercy.
We need to recognize Adams' approach not simply as "unwise" but as "unbiblical." That is to say, it is against the heart of God in this situation. His advice places heavy burdens around Shirley's neck and places the daughter into a dangerous situation.
Paul reminded how strong his home was because his mother and grandmother had taught him the sacred Scriptures.
Dorcas carried out James' admonition to care for the orphans and widows to the degree that the community grieved when she died.
The Bible was not written to be a comprehensive guide to all of human functioning.
Trauma informed practices involve significant care for the body as it processes through traumatic stress. From breathing techniques to physical exercise to grounding exercise, the Bible’s silent.
This week begins with planning the memorial service for my father in law, who passed away Friday morning after an 18 month battle with melanoma.
Q:
What is your only comfort
in life and death?
A:
That I am not my own,
but belong with body and soul,
both in life and in death.
Thus concludes my “Interpreting the SBC for the Presbyterian Mind” adventures. If you’ve stuck with it this far, well, either congratulations or you need to get a hobby!
Is there an identifiable lane between Integrationism and Traditional-Nouthetic Biblical Counseling? My colleagues at
@SEBTS
and I lay out our vision for clinically-informed biblical counseling in a new journal article:
Being a Christian trauma informed counselor requires a deep and through knowledge of the Scriptures. God has spoken for our benefit. It also requires other knowledge that God has given us to effectively and holistically care for those who are experiencing trauma.
Friends, I'm down for the count with a sinus infection. Teaching an intensive EdD course on abuse and trauma starting tomorrow. Pray the symptoms lift enough for me to be coherent by 9AM tomorrow?
Many thanks to everyone who prayed for Kate today. The exploratory procedure was successful in ruling out many problems, but didn't point to any specific cause for pain and other symptoms. Good news: No structural damage. Frustrating news: The hunt continues.
A really helpful thread on clinically-informed counseling from Joe Hussung here. CI biblical counseling is not juxtaposed against biblical faithfulness, instead, it's an approach that is focused on redemption and biblical flourishing using all available wisdom in its proper way.
A BC Thread on Clinically-Informed Counseling.
As a biblical counselor working for a counseling organization who is "clinically-informed," I thought it would be good to have a thread on why Clinical Information (CI) is important and wise for BC.
It’s been ten wonderful years of marriage to this wonderful woman. Seeing yet another specialist isn’t exactly high romance, but it is a living prayer that answers will be found one day and she can be restored to functional life. In sickness and in health, always.
Abuse isn't necessarily enabled by bad doctrine. It's often enabled by good doctrine which is twisted and perverted in its application.
We're wise to think "How could what I'm teaching be turned into a weapon?" and then work to highlight how it can be misused.
Graduation day! The best part of this picture is the woman holding the other half of the diploma. I may have "earned" it, but let's be real - her servant heartedness and years of sacrifice are far more beautiful and praiseworthy than any degree.
@SWBTS
All of these are my own interpretations of what took place, but realize they are from someone who is a professor at Reformed Theological Seminary, affirms about 99% of the Westminster Confession, and was actually in the room when it happened (the SBC meeting that is, not the WCF)
I'm +22 days since positive covid test and still find myself absolutely exhausted around 2pm every day. I ran 5k a few days ago without any trouble so it's not like I'm down for the count, but the exhaustion is a different category. Anybody else experience this too?
However, if the-Bible-as-trauma-informed means that a counselor is trauma informed simply because he or she is using the Scriptures…that’s another matter.
Trauma informed care certainly involves many other aspects beyond the body - from discerning common cognitive and emotional patterns, intrusive thoughts, etc., but in the interest of keeping this thread a manageable length, I’ll end here.
