This is the Auckland Harbour Bridge. This isn't an illusion or photoshop. In 1974, in the face of rising petrol prices Waka Kotahi (NZTA) opened two lanes to pedestrians and cyclists. We did it then. We can do it now.

E-bikes & e-scooters will do more for the planet (and cities) than electric cars ever will. 6x more e-bikes/e-scooters have been imported into NZ since 2014 than electric cars. Imagine how many people could be zipping around on e-bikes if subsidised.

1,000s of people walk, scoot and cycle over the Wynyard Crossing Bridge every week. But due to a fault, it’s closed until next year. However, it’s, being kept open vertically so a handful of expensive yachts can come and go anytime. Another benefit for the few over the many.

At just 1,020 metres, it would take the average person commuting by bike less than 5 minutes to cross and under 3 minutes with an ebike. Any argument that it’s much to bike or people wouldn’t use a dedicated bike lane, is flat wrong.

In Japan, a 7-day NZD 375 rail pass will get you unlimited rides on any train to any place (including high speed rail). In NZ, a $229 ticket gets you from Auckland to Wellington once. We can do better!

The death of a pedestrian should be acknowledged - even when it’s an inconvenient truth. In 2018 a Giltrap employee hit and killed a someone crossing Great North Rd, in 2021 Giltrap claimed there had been no deaths on the road, to fight improvements.

The Auckland Regional Fuel Tax is gone as of today. The 30% of the revenue was for road safety improvements, which were expected to reduce road deaths and serious injuries by 488. Can you really do something better than that with your 11 cents?
