The point of bookstores/record stores like these is not to find something specific when you go in, but to get the treasures hidden inside somewhere
Si crees que las únicas dos opciones para una novela mexicana son escribir sobre ser fifí o escribir sobre la barrialidad en Neza, creo que no deberías ni escribir ni opniar sobre literatura.

My parents had an acquaintance who introduced herself as probably the only Hungarian-Nahuatl speaker since the time of the second Mexican empire
with Barth's passing the canon of the first wave of american postmodernism as represented by this photo has Robert Coover (front row, left, smiling at Gaddis) as its last representative. He is 92 years old.
Pretty funny that I own three books that use the same painting on the cover (the Rilke is flipped, so it doesn’t match the others exaxtly). Might buy nyrb’s Simone Weil book to complete the set
Visited nyc, bought some books, saw one of my favorite paintings. This will be my last post for a while, a friend has talked me into a social media break for two months. See y’all later.

Dreaming of making 2023 the year where I read all the biggest unread (fiction) books in my library, displayed here by (the very imperfect metric of) page count, ascending. The cutoff at the bottom was 700 pages, and the longest—by almost a thousand pages—was of course, Proust.
the coolest math thing to ever happen in mexico is like that algtop congress all the way back in 1956 which every professor still talks about despite not being there, after which hurewicz died falling of a maya pyramid.
Since thinking about the American canon has occupied a solid part of my brain for the last couple months, I'm happy now to offload this task to you...here's our list of 136 Great American Novels. Enjoy and argue.
Zach is one of the people here with the best taste! His excitement/love for Donoso should tell you how much you’re missing by not reading this masterpiece!
The greatest horror novel of all time returns! José Donoso's The Obscene Bird of Night is out today, in a new unabridged translation from

Occupy lived way longer in the collective memory of everyone, even if 2020 seemed closer to a breaking point. Don’t really get why.

coming around to your position after reading the article. I had assumed it was a donation which included some money for research and “make tuition free” was part of the agreement, but in reality it’s just the tuition part lol.
I’ve been mulling this today with back/neck pain but here we go: ten favorite novels in no particular order:
Infinite Jest
Autobiography of Red
Pedro Páramo
Wittgenstein’s Mistress
The Melancholy of Resistance
The Puttermesser Papers
Morirás lejos
Hunger
Giles Goat-Boy
Solaris
Student protestors are going to student protest (good!) and admin is going to do admin stuff about that (generally bad!) but the concept of a “resistance to genocide minor” is straight out of Don DeLillo and incredibly funny.
Incredible story. USC offers a minor in “resistance to genocide”, this girl minored in it, was named valedictorian, and then they cancelled her speech because she might talk about genocide

For almost all real numbers x, the coefficients of the continued fraction expansion of x have the same geometric mean, known as Khinchin’s constant. We have not proven that any specific number satisfies this, although the Euler-Mascheroni constant is a candidate.
“Truly terrifying” lmao chill, it’s a perfectly reasonable illustration for a book of essays on food. And skewered is also a stretch, it’s just not entirely laudatory.
The New York Times just skewered my new book. The review is filled with personal attacks and tone-policing, and includes an aside that I didn't write about my father enough. But what is truly terrifying is the graphic they used, of someone dining on what appears to be my head.

This is false. Teichmüller (and Bieberbach too) actively participated in the Deutsche Mathematik movement (including publishing in their journal) which aimed to eliminate "jewish influence" from the german mathematical practice. Fuck off.

There were quite a few Soviet anthropologists/linguists working in Mexico in the twentieth century, so not as impressive but still really cool!
Very boring for somebody in the NY lit scene to interview their friend about their debut book and write about how they're the voice of their generation, yet again, because they write in updated-alt-lit-internet-speak
The prodigal daughter returns! Anyways here are the books I read while on a twitter break (missing the conference of the birds, no clue where I left my copy)
Lollllllllll Ana Mardoll's dad is one of the leads on Lockheed Martin's F-35 project. I'd figure you'd need that kind of pull in the company to be able to create a cushy job for your failson.
I never know if it’s better to post a single photo or 4 photos whenever I get my film developed. Either way I’m obsessed with this photo so I’m going to post it again.

Oh it gets worse: in another quote tweet she mentioned Zachee Imanitawho, a black trans woman who was recently murdered. This is the only time she has brought her name up.
R.I.P. John Barth. A most original and challenging author, creator of the quote embedded in a quote embedded in a quote embedded in a quote embedded in a quote embedded in a quote embedded in a quote (see his story Menelaiad, collected in his magnificent Lost in the Funhouse).
