COMING SOON to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: My entry on "Arabic and Islamic Philosophy of Mathematics"
It is now in the queue for the production and publication process!
My edited collection, 𝐼𝑠𝑙𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑐 𝑃ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑜𝑝ℎ𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑅𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑔𝑖𝑜𝑛: 𝐸𝑠𝑠𝑎𝑦𝑠 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝐴𝑛𝑎𝑙𝑦𝑡𝑖𝑐 𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑠, is now available for pre-order.
True, too expensive! The paperback version will be less expensive.
I am humbled and honoured to learn that I have been awarded a Philip Leverhulme Prize in Philosophy and Theology.
Many thanks to
@uomsoss
for nominating me and to
@LeverhulmeTrust
for recognising my work.

A difficult week is ending with some delightful news. Two papers are accepted for publication: "Avicenna on Empty Intentionality: A Case Study in Analytical Avicennianism" is forthcoming in 𝐵𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑠ℎ 𝐽𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐻𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑃ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑜𝑝ℎ𝑦 and /
1/ Najm al-Dīn al-Kātibī’s 𝘈𝘭-𝘙𝘪𝘴𝘢̄𝘭𝘢𝘩 𝘢𝘭-𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘮𝘴𝘪𝘺𝘺𝘢𝘩 has been the most widely read introduction to logic in the Arabic-speaking world. This book is now edited and translated into English by Tony Street, the supervisor of my second PhD.
My paper 'No Easy Road to PSR' has been accepted in JPhil. It's interesting that the two best journals that have ever accepted my papers (i.e., JPhil and AJP) did so without asking for any revisions, while less competitive journals have asked for 2-3 rounds of revisions.
Just updated the outline of my Islamic Philosophy course. So far 68 students have registered to attend this second-year course this year. Looking forward to meeting them next week!
I will be giving a talk tomorrow. Does the fact that God now knows that I will give a talk tomorrow entail that I am not free in giving this talk? One way to know Fārābī's answer to this question is to attend my talk!
My SEP entry on "Arabic and Islamic Philosophy of Mathematics" is translated into Spanish by Karen Martínez García and publsihed in the latest issue of 𝘚𝘢𝘥𝘳𝘢: 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢 𝘥𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘰𝘧𝘪́𝘢 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘢́𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘢 (Vol. 7, pp. 32-56).
Thrilled that my paper, "Classical Islamic Conceptions of God and Revelation: God Is Not a Person but Can Speak", is published in this volume along with papers by leading philosophers of religion like R. Swinburne, J. Kvanvig, M. Wynn, & Y. Nagasawa.
Mohsen Bidarfar, who was known in the Western academia mainly for his edition of Avicenna's al-Mubāḥaṯāt died at the age of 77. It is unbelievable that he edited and wrote so many important works behind the desk of his bookstore in Qum and in his spare time.

will be out in May 2024.
Here is my path:
Pure Math > Mathematical Logic > Phil. of Logic & Math. -> Phil. of Language -> Phil. of Mind -> History of Islamic Phil.
And parallel to them: Phil. of Religion.
With the exception of pure math, I have never stopped working on any of my previous interests.
The latest issue of 𝐹𝑎𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑃ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑜𝑝ℎ𝑦 is finally out and it is open access. I have a paper there, "On the Varieties of Finitism", which is about the Kalām cosmological argument. 1/2
New issue of 𝐴𝑟𝑎𝑏𝑖𝑐 𝑆𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑃ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑜𝑝ℎ𝑦 is out. My paper "Avicenna on Grasping Mathematical Concepts" has appeared in this issue.

An excellent book on Suhrawardī’s Illuminationism by my academic twin, Tianyi Zhang!
(We started our PhD at the same university, in the same year, and under the same supervisor.)
"How did Avicenna understand the Barcan formulas?" By Wilfrid Hodges
Hodges discussion and re-evaluation of Zia Movahed's 2003 pioneering paper on Avicenna's anticipation of Barcan formulas.
I'm going to give my last lecture of the semester in a couple of hours. After that, thanks to the Philip Leverhulme Prize (
@LeverhulmeTrust
), I'll be taking a break from teaching for the next five semesters!
I will be giving a talk at
@UoE_Philosophy

Looking forward to this exciting workshop.
Perhaps another important step towards Neo-Avicennism in the context of contemporary philosophy?
My paper, "Infinite Magnitudes, Infinite Multitudes, and the Beginning of the Universe", is now published in the latest issue of 𝐴𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑖𝑎𝑛 𝐽𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑜𝑓 𝑃ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑜𝑝ℎ𝑦. 1/2
Thanks to an agreement between the University of Birmingham and
@CambridgeUP
, my paper, "Avicenna on Grasping Mathematical Concepts", is now OPEN ACCESS.
Looking at my CV and the cities I've worked in, one might wonder whether I am a professional philosopher or a passionate football fan: Barcelona, Munich, and now Manchester!
Two PhD positions to work on History of Philosophy in the Islamic World at Radboud University under the supervision of Andreas Lammer as a member of his ERC project.
Given the sad circumstances in my home country (
#MahsaAmini
), it is hard to talk about research and personal achievements, which from a more holistic perspective do not much matter. Nevertheless, I am thrilled to announce that my paper, "Avicenna + Zorn = Necessary Existence",
Jon McGinnis's fascinating paper on divine simplicity in Plantinga and Ghazālı̄ is now online. It is part of an open access special issue of
@CUPRelStudies
that I am editing for
@GlobalPhilRel
. The issue is on *The Existence and Nature of Deities*.
The latest issue of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭—whose theme is 'Against Metaphysical Grounding'—is out. It is edited by my colleagues, Fraser MacBride and Chris Daly.

Philosophy Twitter: I would really love it if everyone could participate in answering this question. Who are your favorite top 10 to 12 philosophers? Mine are Boheme, Maimon, Nishitani, Plotinus, Heidegger, E. Stein, Fichte, Malebranche, Kant, Eckhart, F.H. Bradley, & Schelling,
I am delighted to announce that today marks the publication of our book, Philosophers on God: Talking about Existence.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the project!
I am thrilled to announce that my paper, "Dashtakī’s Solution to the Liar Paradox", has been awarded the 2022 Founders’ Award by the Society for Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy (

I'm going to submit the first paper I've completed since the birth of my daughter. If I don't get a desk rejection, I'll take it as a sign that I've managed to reconcile my job with my post-paternal life!
I know it's too early for this conclusion! But I need these small joys! :)

Both books will be published next year by

Pp 6-7: "Were I asked to label my project, I would describe it as an instance of analytical Avicennianism... [T]he term ‘analytical Avicennianism’ can be understood as referring to the general idea of bridging between Avicenna’s philosophy and contemporary analytic philosophy."

contemporary theories on the nature of intentionality. In the latter paper, I have shown that Dretske's (1965) example of *counting to infinity* does not provide a counterexample to the impossibility of actual infinities (on which the Kalam Cosmological Argument relies).
My Book, 𝑵𝒆𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒂𝒓𝒚 𝑬𝒙𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒔𝒎, has been downloaded 4450 times so far! Thrilling indeed. But I am curious to know how many times it has actually been read!
𝑨𝒗𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒂 𝑺𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒚 𝑮𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒑 𝑰𝑰𝑰 will be held as a series of weekly online talks from June 1 to July 13. My talk, which is about Avicenna’s treatment of the Mapping Argument (for finitism) in his different works, will be on June 15.

Looking forward to this exciting conference at

: "Ultimate Reality / Divinity as the Ground: Exploring the Structure of Reality across Eastern and Western Traditions"
A brilliant paper by Mike Almeida! Another piece of evidence for that we still do not know what is the best modal logic to formalize debates regarding the existence of the traditional God.
Again infinity, again Avicenna!
I will talk tomorrow on "Avicenna’s Treatment of the Mapping Argument in ʿUyūn al-ḥikma, al-Šifāʾ, al-Naǧāt, and Dānešnāme-ye ʿAlāʾī" in Avicenna Study Group.
Open Access Special Issue of 𝑅𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑔𝑖𝑜𝑢𝑠 𝑆𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑖𝑒𝑠 on Evil and Suffering in the World. It is edited by Bakinaz Abdalla, my former colleague

is accepted for publication in one of my favourite journals, 𝑂𝑥𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑑 𝑆𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑃ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑜𝑝ℎ𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑅𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑔𝑖𝑜𝑛. There I have combined elements from Avicenna's Proof of the Sincere with Zorn's Lemma to offer a new argument for the existence of God.
This week I started writing my "Very Short Introduction to Ibn Sīnā (Avicenna)" for Oxford University Press
