Woke up to a story acceptance in my inbox!!! 🤠 Had to read the email a dozen times, half-awake and very confused, to make sure it wasn’t a dream or a kind rejection. Incredible way to start the week. Can’t wait to share more soon!
I promise to never do this again (if there’s ever a next time, I’ll at least TRY to play it cool) but this is the first time, so: HELLO I JUST GOT MY FIRST SHORT STORY CONTRACT EVER IN MY EMAIL AND IT’S FROM AN ABSOLUTE DREAM MARKET AND I’M BOUNCING OFF THE WALLS!!!!!!
Contract signed, so: I am over the moon (and still dizzy with shock tbqh) to share that I have sold a story to
@BCSmagazine
! To have my first acceptance come from a magazine that has meant so much to me is just... beyond my wildest dreams. Very very cool day.
I am SO INCREDIBLY EXCITED (a normal, cool amount of excited! not freaking out silently in my house in the middle of the night at all!!!) to report that I have just been accepted to
@ViableParadise
2024! An absolute dream come true.
I sold my first story - and just happened to sell it to my favorite magazine 🥹 Joined another favorite magazine as a first reader, too, and was just accepted into my dream writing workshop! But most of all: I challenged myself to start submitting stories & I did! 🤠
It's really happening! I'm so excited (and also so bizarrely nervous?!) to share my first story soon. Seeing my name on the
@BCSmagazine
website doesn't feel even a little real.
That’s my name! On a magazine cover! 🥹 My first-ever story will be online on the 11th, but you can read it now! Come for the incredible Emily C. Skaftun story, stay for mine!
Hi,
#writingcommunity
! Very late to this trend, which is on brand. I’m MR! (The star of this pic is Winnie.) When I’m not writing about Renaissance literature, I write speculative fiction! Usually sapphic, mostly fantasy, often historical. My first story comes out tomorrow! ✨
Happy to report that we've acquired "Lucinda Espinosa's Twenty-Seventh Death" by
@mruthrobinson
! M.R. has previously been published in Beneath Ceaseless Skies.
Hi, friends! I'm so, so excited to have been accepted to
@ViableParadise
- it's a dream come true. But I'm struggling with the cost and could use a little extra help getting there. I would be beyond grateful for any support or shares:

Treated myself to a very lovely morning at a beloved coffee shop reading through the newest issue of

Sometimes it’s your birthday and then your first story comes out in your favorite magazine and then your perfect friend makes you a perfect cake and it turns out that life is really, really lovely, actually.
A review of my
@BCSmagazine
story in Tangent! I cannot complain about being called “very pleasant,” and it’s extremely cool to be reviewed! Grateful to Victoria Silverwolf for reading and reviewing.
Finally made it out to celebrate and immediately saw a puppy wearing a frog backpack. Could not have asked for a better ending to a very good but very long week.

I read Sunbathers last night! More thoughts later, but for now, let me just say: holy hell, everyone needs to read Sunbathers. Cannot WAIT until we are all talking about this novella.
Since it IS my birthday, maybe you’ll forgive me for bumping this again? 👀 Almost halfway there! Seriously cannot believe it. So endlessly grateful for the shares and support.

Sappy grateful post: I can’t believe I’ve raised 20% of my VP tuition in a day. So thankful. It sucks asking for help and it really sucks being broke, but being supported + encouraged by a generous community of other writers extremely does not suck.
I currently have seven story submissions suspiciously overdue for a rejection, and the only thing I want for my birthday is to not get seven rejection emails today. Just putting this plea out into the universe 🙏
Just got some very affirming feedback on my most beloved story, the story of my heart, the one I was ready to give up on: 😀😌🥳
I think… I want to… rewrite it as a novella: 😦🫣🥴
"Ten Ways of Looking at Snow, Reflected Off an Obsidian Armor" (
@avramargariti
) is dizzyingly gorgeous. I read this story with my heart in my throat and kept looping back to reread paragraphs again and again. Wanted it to go on forever.
"Ghost Apples" (
@lamotdite
) opens the issue with a first line that is at once startlingly violent and achingly tender, and it never loses any of that momentum. I don't want to give anything away, but so many images in this story took my breath away. A lush, beautiful love story.
Saving all my over-the-top “please read” posting for next week, but if you support Beneath Ceaseless Skies on Patreon (which you should do! because it’s the best!) there’s an early ebook up today with a certain story in it… 👀
Me in January, writing my first short story: These are the most perfect 10,000 words I have ever written. I cannot possibly shorten this by a single syllable.
Me today, after rewriting that same story as a 1,000 word flash: I think I could cut this in half.
One more share going into the weekend! So incredibly grateful for all the reads, shares, and kind words so far - it really means the world to me. Thank you!

Support for Reckoning has flagged a bit since our 2022 fundraiser. We don't want to roll back payrates--we want to pay more, so more marginalized folks can have room to write about environmental justice and teach us how to be better! Plz help if you can?
The story was inspired by a folktale about a human girl who spends her youth dancing with a fairy woman - but ultimately chooses a mortal life, and then spends her whole life grieving that loss. I wanted to reimagine that story's ending, which I find so haunting (linked below).
This was the first short story I ever started - though definitely not the first I finished - and it’s really special to me. It features my favorite kind of love story (messy, inevitable, tragic) and the space western vibes of my dreams. And to have it in FF… too good to be true!
Strongly strongly recommend signing up if you haven’t already. You’ve already missed so many incredible story recs + so many profoundly upsetting food crimes!

Luckily I have no free time right now because making a story longer is probably always a bad idea. But someday I will have a writer pal who wants to swap drafts and I will fling this one at them IMMEDIATELY. And then I will learn how to fix it, and I will be at peace. 😌
"Linden Honey, Blackcurrant Wine" is a slightly-bitter-mostly-sweet sapphic love story told over sixty years. It's about time and loss and love and grief and queerness and shame and yearning. And magic! And trees! All my favorite things!
If you like sapphic love stories, elderly protagonists, hopeful re-visionings of melancholy folktales, and sky-high levels of yearning, I’m hopeful that you’ll like this story too. Can't wait to share it when the time comes.

A heartbreaking loss! Will miss Apparition terribly - so, so grateful for all the work they’ve done and all the incredible stories and authors they’ve put on my radar.
After 7 years of putting our hearts into this passion project, the founding editors have decided Apparition Lit will close at the end of 2024.

Taking a year off from my usual birthday LOTR marathon and themed all-day feast since I just saw them in theaters in June, but thought I’d share last year’s menu (my magnum opus tbh) just for fun!
I could go on, but in the interest of brevity, I'll just note that I loved this issue cover-to-cover! (On that subject, /what/ a cover by
@laurenrayesnow
.) I really hope everyone gets a chance to read this issue of
@HavenSpec

too!
I’m so glad I get to exist in the same timeline as the cyberpunk masochist clowns story 🥲 this story is incredible and I can’t wait to read it again (and again)

Not to be corny but thank YOU for writing it! I wish I could go back in time and tell kid-me that she would someday live in a world where she gets to read SFF stories as queer and raw and beautiful and startling as this one!! Never gets old!
Editor's Note: This story, "We Will Teach You How to Read | We Will Teach You How to Read" is one of the most amazing stories I've ever read. I urge everyone to read it, & I'm so excited to finally share it with you all.

I love these stories so much! Both tender in very different ways, both packed with so many beautiful sentences that you’ll find yourself losing track of all the ones you meant to remember.
ICYMI I have two stories out so far this year! my sapphic winter romance "Ghost Apples" in

“Blood and sand. One to another. Blood and sand.” This is a spectacularly lovely story. I opened the link to save it for later but was so drawn in by the opening that I had to read it right away. So, so good. If you, like me, missed this one in April - remedy that immediately!
I can’t wait to say more whenever I can (I don’t know how this works!) but in the meantime you can find me running circles around my house like a dog with the zoomies
(If this looks familiar, it’s because I posted this last night then felt weird and annoying and promptly deleted it 🙃 But today I am determined to actually live up to the spirit of the original post!!!)
@Catrambo
I think Sofia Samatar's website is really nice; it always sticks in my head as an example of a great website in part because of the "recommended reading" tab, which I visit regularly. As a reader, any chance to learn more about the books my favorite writers love is just the best!
@Danaiwrites
I am my dog’s second-favorite person, and every time it rains when my wife isn’t home, he looks at me like “my other mom would NEVER let this happen. she would simply stop the rain. with her mind.”
Nothing more dangerous than the moments when I joke to my wife that I’m going to abandon my dissertation in order to finish my pirate novel and she says “do it.”

Totally! Just echoing John’s point about discussion quality. I generally think it’s a good thing that it’s less common now to assign that much in college classes. But also of course agree that we should not be teaching excerpts only, and I wish everyone was reading more overall!

Worked on revisions today while my wife studied for the bar. Highly recommend; turns out editing seems really really easy if you pretend the alternative is taking the bar exam.

Really loved your thread about the joys of reading slush; thank you! I used to slush-read novels for a lit agent and wrote looong comments in a template w/ lots of formal categories. Out of curiosity, is the process similarly standardized for short story comments? Or more loose?
@lamotdite
This was the first story I wrote and I’m still thinking about it every day 🙈 Constantly torn between “I’m just this attached because it’s the first” and “I need to drop everything right now and figure out what to do with this story.” Someday! I hope!!
My first time sharing anything from my sapphic fantasy WIP - really glad to know the first line, at least, might be working! Thanks so much for doing this,
@KeirAlekseii
