Yesterday at NPR I admitted I was really into jam bands as a teen and none other than Carrie Brownstein looked at me and then said “yeah, I can tell by your pants.” Not totally sure what she meant but kind of iconic nonetheless.
I was one of the people laid off from NPR during this brutal round of layoffs. I’m gutted and heartbroken that I won’t be able to continue working at
@nprmusic
on stories I love with people I admire so much.
for the last few years i have worked on the Tiny Desk Contest as a member of NPR's events team, splitting my time with
@nprmusic
. but yesterday was my last day as a member of the events team! i am now fully a member of NPR Music, a thrilling update for me :)
Hi 👋 I was recently laid off from
@nprmusic
& will soon be looking for work. Here’s a thread of the many wonderful things I worked on in my nearly seven years here 🧵:
i wrote about high school superlatives, friendship, empathy, nostalgia, the past, the present and
@lucydacus
' sweet and wise new album for
@nprmusic
💙
I wrote about Duster, a band who means a lot to me. It's the story of an unlikely comeback featuring millennial burnout, lots of tape hiss & at least one conspiracy theory about a skate video.
Rosetta Tharpe is one of the most important figures in American popular music, but for decades after she died, no one talked about her. For
@nprmusic
's Turning the Tables, I wrote about why -- and how her legacy was rescued.
This weekend I threw a huge party with the greatest person I know to celebrate our love & the community our love has created. Holy moly. Love is so beautiful and I feel so lucky 💙
Barbie starts out the movie with bangs -- and then, by the end, when she is meant to be a liberated woman, she no longer has bangs. I don't like what this implies.
this is true! after ~2 years at NPR Music, first as an intern & then as a temp, i'm now what they call a "regular" employee. sounds anticlimactic but is actually a *total* dream come true!! truly truly grateful.
For Turning the Tables, I wrote an essay about not being an expert on Yoko Ono, and a live performance that changed my life, and how concepts like "expertise" and "knowledge" are actually pretty blurry if you stare at them long enough!
I will have more to say at some point — my last day is in late April; please expect a thread where I gush about all of that aforementioned great work and ask you to tell me about job leads — but in the meantime: this sucks.
btw i'm still looking for work :) i love feature editing, i'm good at newsletters, i know how to write. i really miss helping people make cool stuff happen! arts/culture/music/anything. part time/full time/contract/whatever. email on my site 🫶 tysm 🫶

@xboygeniusx
came to the Tiny Desk and didn’t finish the cupcakes they were gifted so now I’m eating them in the hopes they’ll give me superpowers like songwriting prowess and/or the strength of female friendship
Turning the Tables is
@nprmusic
's project about challenging sexist, hierarchical notions of musical greatness. This year, we're focusing on our personal relationships with music: How do we know when a piece of music is important to us? What does it mean to make a personal canon?
i really really love the
@Palehound
record that comes out tomorrow -- both for how it captures the way our bodies can respond to emotional crises and for how much it simply rocks. reviewed it for
@nprmusic
💚
It feels special to be part of the group of people who can say "Bob Boilen changed my life" but that group is actually enormous — Bob's vision & passion at NPR made so much possible for so many listeners & artists 🥲 It was a total honor & joy to have gotten to work with him.
After 35 years, I am leaving NPR. I've had the thrill of creating Tiny Desk Concerts, All Songs Considered, directing All Things Considered for 18 years and so much more. I love the people I've worked with, but it's time to find new challenges. thank you for listening/watching.
in the past two weeks everyone I know who is working from home has chosen one of the three following hobbies: 1) baking bread 2) playing Animal Crossing 3) threatening to get a dramatic haircut
✨
@Sid_Madden
recognized some members of the 'Homecoming' marching band from past Tiny Desk performances. So she chatted with them about the road to Beychella. The brilliance!
🎉Great news!
@francq__
's extremely lovely album 'Likewise' is out this Friday. Even greater news: You can listen to the whole thing right now on

i can't stop thinking about what my life would look like if i had heard this record as a teen + how much comfort it would have brought me.
NPR’s cafeteria has foods themed for Super Tuesday states today and Massachusetts is represented by fluffernutter French toast. So proud of my home state.
I know I haven’t accomplished much in my life thus far, but I *did* get my mom front row at Dave Matthews’ Tiny Desk concert, and I think that counts for something.

how much less alone + confused i would have felt, how much more aware of queer history + community. this album and band are so powerful.
do you ever find yourself sitting next to men at a bar who are talking about women in such a way that you wish, like truly wish, you could cast a curse????
Mentally I am in the small cabin in Western Mass where Adrianne Lenker recorded her new albums, physically I am adding her new song "Anything" to our Press Pause playlist
i am so excited about this year's
#TinyDeskContest
winner: a thoughtful, charming, gifted songwriter with a unique voice and an important, captivating song
after the two Tiny Desks we produced this week,
@LyndseyMcK
and I got shout-outs in both the queer slack channel & the emo revival slack channel at work ... containing multitudes, feeling seen
I saw Kacey Musgraves and Harry Styles last night and I came away with two deeply held beliefs: the kids are indeed alright & Kacey is single-handedly reclaiming horse girl culture for all of us.
Unsigned artists: Send us a video of you playing an original song and you could play your very own Tiny Desk concert. The Tiny Desk Contest, supported by
@StateFarm
, opens for entries Tuesday, May 11! Learn more:
As my colleagues put it: "As crappy as this year has been for anyone with a shred of empathy, the jams were ample." Here's
@nprmusic
's list of the best songs of 2020.
I wrote an essay about this process and what it means to make a present canon. It's also about the future of gender, the persistence of sexism and the power of Robyn.

anyway here is to my beloved queer community, to my friends who have come out this year, and to outing myself on the Internet 🙃
I temped for ~18 months before I was converted to a “regular” employee. I was lucky enough to have long-term assignments, but it still felt like every single day was an audition for the job(s) I was already doing.
i talked to
@JournalismMusic
about what i'm lucky enough to do for a job/how i'm always in need of pep talks from the smart people around me/why it's good to read books
