Over the last few days I attempted #1BRC in Go and managed to hover around ~20s on a 10 core machine! Reading file in chunks was the crucial bit in this version. More CPUs will def help to bring down the time. Blog link in 2nd tweet.

A typical Rails app will serve up to 1.5 requests per second per vCPU. With tuning plus an optimized app, that can be up to about 5 requests per/sec/vCPU. So these days, vertical scaling can buy you 75-250 requests per/sec for 350 a month… not bad. ~5-10x better than Heroku.

@kish2011_ neither gives bragging rights to indicate "move out of cloud". that term is typically when you run your own DC. this is simply switching providers for cheaper costs. And every major cloud provider gives you an option run dedicated (another term for bare metal) instances.

I kinda disagree. When I was younger I had so much time to experiment with distros/tools/editors/configs etc. Now I just want something with sane defaults and good out of the box experience 🙈

It's actually the same thing with Linux. I know others feel differently, but I think most beginners and early stage developers are actually better off just using a Mac (or Windows). Less room for error, more guardrails. Level up in a safe space, then explore the world.

Programming is easy, but Java makes it frustratingly difficult. Instead of business logic, Java makes us focus on abstraction & extensibility. A simple IF is required to be modelled as multi-level abstraction, because SOLID, whyy! Verbosity does necessarily improve readability.

Talking with devs at AWS & AWS customers, one thing that AWS does better than almost any vendor: Talking to customers. Ask yourself: which other vendor called you, to want to meet and have *their PM* directly talk to you? AWS does this all the time. Hard to believe but true:
