Recent weeks have been the most difficult of our lives. On 1/6/2024 our daughter Lily Grace Fitzgibbon was born asleep. We’re grateful for the time we got to spend with her but our hearts are broken. We’re keen to keep Lily’s memory alive and support those who face what we have.

For obvious reasons, the situation in Ukraine hit peak interest in school. Students keen for answers/reassurance. Tip of the iceberg but the ‘conflict at a glance’ looks to the geography, history/politics of the dispute. Hopefully it provides accessible insight. #historyteacher

Weimar and Nazi Germany Topic review continues this week. Overarching umbrella factors for Nazi party growth between 1929-32 and an infographic analysis for Hitler’s rise to Chancellor. Mixing it up between teacher talk and individual recall/explanations. #historyteacher

Year 10 have found instant recall of knowledge tough at times this year. I'm hoping that 'cherry picking' features for the initial 4 mark questions will focus their revision and boost their confidence. ✅💡🍒 #historyteacher #NQT #GCSE

Took an absolute divebomb belly flop out of my comfort zone today launching my 'Making it...' whole school CPD sessions. I'll record each one and will happily share once my colleagues have suffered/advised on if they're worth posting. Terrified but excited! #historyteacher #CPD

Finished Weimar with Y11. Two tasks that have worked well to consolidate understanding are @KKNTeachLearn significance bar chart = broad explained overview of events whilst the challenges to Weimar homework breaks down each uprising. #historyteacher

Always after recall formats that can be applied across KS3/4/5. 'Sniff out the lies' is a basic true or false explain either way task. However, I'm hoping it will raise a smile/lower the stakes for students and make them feel comfortable enough to get stuck in. #historyteacher

Spent this morning putting together a ‘Folding Narrative’. Simple way of chunking key events and structuring an answer visually. Also allows for easier modelling as you can build/explain each stage individually. Hope they work!! #historyteacher

Simple, effective and no doubt the best change I've made to my practice! Routine quizzing, all in one place, at the start of every lesson has provided the biggest beneficial impact with my Year 11 class. We're now onto Book Two and they cant get enough. #historyteacher

Cold War is a goldmine for knowledge recall. Y11 will be giving ‘Cold War Connections’ a go after we tackle more new content to test their long term memories. Link the key terms to to the specific factor and embed in the questions. Mine turned out alright 👍🏼 #historyteacher

After following the ideas from @TMHistoryIcons all day, it's only fair to give something back. All the 'Bare Bones' for C&P, Elizabeth I, Weimar/Nazi Germany and Superpower Relations are complete! I hope they're of use.💡 #historyteacher #TMHistoryIcons19

Needed something that embraced the 'Weimar Terminology Ticklist'/solidify our start on the early Nazi Party. Y11 will return to 'Go Fish' Recall/Factor Selection. Catch (highlight) the fish factors that match the question, define three/embed in extended answer.🐟🎣 #historyteacher

First lesson back regardless of delivery format both student/teacher need reassurance they can still do the business. So, here's my opener for GCSE and we're hammering recall. 1. Don't sit on the fence 10 question test. 2. Content Connections extended writing. #historyteacher

With a growing intent to embed historical scholarship into lessons, the ‘historical jousts’ format is a great introduction to interpretation/debate for KS3/4. 1. Recall 2. Two clashing opinions 3. Separate analysis of each 4. Summative question The hour flies. #historyteacher

In recent days the magnitude/uniqueness of our role as history teachers has hit me. We have a responsibility to open eyes to hate, intolerance and persecution whilst equipping minds to identify, challenge and overcome. What a task, but what an incentive. #historyteacher

A plus from recent assessment changes is the use of the same format across KS3. It’s easier for staff to adapt, builds consistency for students who can directly focus on content and makes tracking progress logistically easier than hunting for pieces through books. #historyteacher

Y11/Y13 have made use of the ‘Definition Dots’ to help their recall of previous knowledge for their last set of mocks. Some of this content hasn’t been covered since last year, and this has been the most effective format to aid definitions/highlight misconceptions #historyteacher

Setting more time aside to complete work I set remotely myself. Great for gauging times, understanding what will work/won’t and finally having a model from which to answer student queries. Still one of the best tips I was given and a must for trainees/NQT’s. #historyteacher
