When I wrote this essay about Elijah McClain and the policing of Black nonconformity, I thought about how much my nephew and I love to sing to ourselves and dance down the street, lost in our inner worlds. I love being a weirdo. I want the world to let my nephew stay weird too.

In the United States, there's a tendency to embrace nonconformity in principle—but not so for Black men, whose personal quirks can spark fear, policing, punishment, or worse, writes @monicacbell .

I wish we saw graduation from an elite law school as a sign, not of wisdom or morality, but of privilege, luck, and *maybe* book smarts. These institutions can do more -- and I'm in that fight. But we should also stop conflating elite academic credentials w/ personal credentials.

We can stop rewarding only the students who seem most "naturally brilliant"--those who are most verbally fluent in class, those who never ask for help, those who usually seem happy with us. None of those traits are criteria for intellect or academic value. 8/11

#DerekChauvin 's conviction was not about the officers' utter disregard for George Floyd's safety and mental health when he was having an anxiety reaction as they tried to force him into the police vehicle.

When I listened to the recording of the conversation the "trap house" student had with administrators, I was impressed. Indeed, I wish my own tough conversations had such a thoughtful, careful, and blame-free tone.

First-gens often react in 3 ways. (1) Work hard anyway, visibly, and gain the stigmatized rep of "gunner" or braggart. (2) Decide they aren't so smart and re-channel their energy into goals they see as requiring competence, not brilliance. (3) Check out completely. 4/11

This necessary accountability of #DerekChauvin should not distract from the deeper and *more* necessary project of institutional change and societal transformation.

If we’ve talked much in the last year, I’ve probably rambled about my amazing experience in Tulsa just before the pandemic and my admiration for many of the people I met. This essay is one bit of a larger project on democratic reparation after state-sanctioned racial violence.

Recently learned that our paper, "Relationship Repertoires, the Price of Parenthood & the ‘Costs’ of Contraception," was a finalist for the 2019 Frank R. Breul Memorial Prize for best article published in Social Service Review. Surprised; honored. @KathrynEdin @girlziplocked

Most of the incidents that foster legal estrangement in Black communities are akin to the injustices that *preceded* that particular harrowing moment.
