What happens when a reporter and photographer move to the Texas border for a few months to write about life at the edge of the Rio Grande? Our first story appears today on
@latimes
with help from valley native Verónica G. Cárdenas. Here’s why we did it, in a few tweets.
A year ago, I met transgender migrant Mayela Villegas, 27, in a Mexican border tent camp before she crossed legally to claim asylum in Texas. At the end of May, a friend contacted me to say Mayela had died.
If you’ve received a letter from the Texas attorney general’s office requesting medical records of transgender Texas youth treated at your out of state facility, I’d like to talk to you. The office is refusing to release these public records to the press.
@RobertDinTulsa
I’m a reporter - I’m not stay home. This is America. Btw, none of the government advisories said press had to stay home. If they had, we would have challenged them.
To all the misinformed people saying reporters should stay home after curfew
@MinneapolisPD
@CityMinneapolis
NEVER said that. If they had, we would have challenged it. We’re essential workers. Residents told me the only way they located fires was reports.
#FactsMatter
3/ I told the officer, respectfully, that media are not mentioned as subject to curfew, and since there’s a
#FirstAmendment
and
#FEMA
deemed us essential workers, if they don’t mention it, we’re exempt. If they do mention, it would trigger litigation.

3:30 a.m four asylum seekers came to the Laredo bridge for the first full day of "tent court." This Honduran single mom brought all her belongings, assuming she wouldn't return. She has $5; no phone.

It has been nearly a week since your officers fired at and chased me and other members of the press. Do you intend to investigate, apologize and take corrective action? You did this. You pepper sprayed my colleague, a photographer, in the eyes.
I'm attempting to observe immigration court at Port Isabel detention center courtroom - which is public - but have been turned away twice by guards because reporters must have ICE approval

If you detain, arrest or shoot at the press, YOU are in violation of the curfew.
4/ Does
#kenosha
curfew bar press coverage? I’ll be following up with officials tomorrow. Curious what the mayor thinks. Streets were quiet, many more police out than civilians, no protesters in sight.

Fact check based on state and federal stats: from 2011 to 2018, 5,580 illegal aliens were charged with sex offenses and held in Texas prisons, 797 a year average.
Thousands of illegal aliens who have committed sexual crimes against children are right now in Texas prisons. Most came through our Southern Border. We can end this easily - We need a Steel Barrier or Wall. Walls Work! John Jones, Texas Department of Public Safety.
