Reflections after a year of caring for inpatients with COVID:
1. This third wave really is different, with very sick young patients
2. Many are previously healthy and have no idea how they acquired it
3. It's remarkable how treatment has evolved
Heartbroken to share news of the death of Dr. Rob Sargeant, master clinician, beloved teacher, and fearless leader
@GIMtoronto
@UofT_DoM
@UnityHealthTO
. Much love and support to
@KarenSargeant

And I can't say enough good things about the nurses: their kindness, skill and professionalism have made the difference for countless patients and their families
Very sad to learn of the death of Dr. Murray Krahn, distinguished scientist and beloved internist

A huge loss for

COVID ward observation: our older hospitalized patients often do not use phones/tablets and are desperate for newspapers, other reading material and radios. Wish these were more available on the wards.

Our op-ed on the role of generalist care in Canada's hospitals. Driven by demographic trends (aging population + rising multi-morbidity) and shifting models of care delivery (50%⬆️in admissions to general medical wards over last decade). 1/4

Congratulations to Dr.
@Steve_Shadowitz
, recipient of the 2018 Canadian Society of Internal Medicine Osler Award! The award recognizes excellence in the field of general internal medicine.
In my 7 days on one of our (now 12!) non ICU
#COVID19
units, I admitted 58 patients for COVID rule out, of whom 50 tested positive. Two died (DNR), 2 went to hospice, and 5 went to the ICU. That is… not my typical gen med service week. Following, some clinical observations.

has required that we change so much - from the way we run our wards to the patient experience. We created to try and help institutions organize and prepare, with a focus on patient-centred care - during the COVID-19 pandemic. Check it out!
Really enjoyed hearing the inspiring

So many truths in this moving discussion between the incomparable Rob Sargeant and

Thank you to everyone who came to our 2nd city-wide GIM WIP Rounds [Work In Progress]. WIP rounds provide early career GIM docs the opportunity to get feedback on research projects they are working on. DM me if you haven't been before & interested in attending the next WIP Rounds

But ongoing pet peeve: I wish hospitals had more tablets/radios/TVs/reading material for isolated patients. Not everyone has a smartphone
Younger patients, getting sicker, faster. Entire families infected by the virus. Intensive care units close to overflowing.
@maywarren11
and I spoke to 7 health workers about the third wave. The conversations were haunting. 1/
Nice work by

PhD candidate and soon-to-be faculty (but not-on-Twitter) Dr. Manav Vyas. Looking at sex differences in overall stroke incidence can mask important differences by age group.
Congratulations to

Agree. The US REGARDS study found that rural residence was associated with an even greater increase in stroke incidence and mortality than observed in our study.
Can findings be extrapolated to the US? Suspect that in US where rural residents tend to be less insured, disparities are even more marked with primary and perhaps secondary prevention. curious if authors have hypoth

We need a line of sight on hospital occupancy like we do COVID counts.
@OntHospitalAssn

I'm imagining a
