Just thought of doing a random comparison, of a top rated Chinese University (Tsinghua) and top rated Indian University (IISc).
I am not picking on any institution, but trying to make a comparison. Generally, the top performing institutions are the best funded ones. At least
If you are a senior PhD student and are depending on your advisor (all the time) to tell you what to do next, you are doing it wrong.
It's always better to go to them with a list of options and then use them as sounding board to weigh the pros and cons of each.
Custom Duty for Lab Chemicals raised to 150% from 10%. A chemical that was costing 54,000/- is now 1,29,000/-. How to run experimental chemistry Labs?

To all potential PhD applicants : you don't need to be at a ranked school / program to do good research.
A good advisor and a collaborative research group is many order of magnitudes better for personal and professional growth than being with the opposite at a top program.
Train your PhD students to solve problems. Not just write papers.
Papers are a by-product of scientific research endeavours. Not the final goal.
Paper are just the means of telling the world how you solved a problem.
In India, we get so much further ahead if we could incentivise our students to stay back and do their research *in India*.
We have such a large and talented student pool that we don't even need to import students - although having a large diverse set of people from around the
Attracting the best students from around the world -> grad schools -> academia -> research -> venture capital -> technology development -> large unified market.

@DheerajSanghi
has dropped a lot of truth bombs in this thread.
My experience is not as vast as Prof. Sanghi's, but what he says has been my experience as well.
So, this recently happened.
Thanks

I was recently told that someone as a PI published 40 papers in an academic year.
If I am ever in that position (which I am certain will never happen) I would be happy to just remember the titles of those papers. Which in itself would be an award worthy contribution.
Well,
@TheKenWeb
, as a paying customer, I'd very much like an explanation.
I happily pay for good, original *non-plagiarised* content. Which is what I thought I was doing. Till today.
Mistakes happen. I hope it was a one time indiscretion. And if it was that, it should be
Please remember that PhD stipends are not salaries. They were never intended to be.
In essence, PhDs are paid apprenticeships. You get paid a stipend while you learn the tools of the trade, the trade in this case being research, and how to do it.
That said, there is

37k is peanuts when considering cuties with higher COL. Not to forget that many scholars get married and also start a family while in PhD. Would you say 37k is enough for them as well?
Full Professors on Twitter: Academics should not be judged based on the number of papers they publish. It's the quality of the contributions that matter.
Same full Professors in tenure letters: the candidate hasn't published enough papers, yet. I'd suggest to wait and watch. 🤷🏽

If you are looking for academic careers in India in 2022, please remember this : it is absolutely possible to have a fulfilling and productive career outside of the IIX systems. More so now than 10 years ago, and I foresee many more exciting opportunities in the next decade.
This morning, Spotify, threw up a song called "चार bottle Vodka" into my running playlist from someone called Yo Yo Honey Singh. It is filled with extremely unlikely claims about alcohol consumption. This is a clarification🧵, academic review style
People vastly underestimate the money, time, effort and expertise required to create a lasting academic institution. Especially in India, where higher education is tightly regulated.
Celebrating the brilliance that drives innovation. Qualcomm congratulates the recipients of the 2024 Qualcomm Faculty Awards in India. Looking forward to collaborating with the university faculty members as we shape the future of technology and inspire young minds across the
Man, you put out *one* meme that PhD students (and advisors) can relate to, and all of sudden you feel the pressure to produce more content for the 100 new followers.
In the previous (2023-2024) budget

No wonder their budgets aren't being increased.
We should complain about the GoI not increasing R&D budgets, but we should complain louder about inefficiencies of these
If you are a PhD student, you are working towards earning *your* PhD degree.
You are best served if you use your advisor as an advisor, and not as a task master.
A significant part of the success of your PhD program lies with you.

This is my personal pet peeve.
The idea of replicating the architectural aesthetics of the west (where overall temperatures are low the countries are energy rich) in buildings of North India where it’s summer for 6 months of the year is a terrible, terrible idea.
Acceptable salutations for academics at various stages of their career:
Assistant Prof: Prof
Associate Prof: Prof
Professor: Prof
Professor (HAG): Prof
Let's not create unnecessary class systems by using different salutations for what are largely similar jobs.
