Koo usually just listens to humans from afar when they arrive around his territory in their weird swimming machines they call ships, cutters, boats and so on. They make /a lot of/ noise - machines as well as humans.

Koo finally smiles again, tilling his head to the side and pointing to the forest. “No salt water there. Lot of ponds. You drink. I hunt fish, you eat. You live, you stay. I learn” he states finally, earning another long loud breath from the human.

But Koo was aware that most of the humans didn’t even know about merpeople existence (which was for the best for the mers), so maybe the human didn’t understand how good of a mate Koo could make. He will have to prove himself. He was always up for a good challenge anyway.

He's always careful when they're near. He never gets too close to them, because if he remembers only a few things his mother taught him, one of them is that humans should be avoided. He made it his rule number one not to approach any of them long long ago.

And humans are interesting. Koo always wanted to know more about the human world, their huge cities and enormous lands, way bigger than any of his favorite islands. But he also knows that humans mean danger. Especially in a group.

And the second problem is that Koo is shy and the human is really beautiful. Small but well-built, probably strong and very capable of carrying Koo's offspring, if it is possible for a human to have mer's parr (mating season is just around the corner, don't judge him).

Koo suddenly feels defensive, so he lifts himself up from the water, to get closer to the human to dominate him. Human isn't stupid though, he takes a few steps back, but he appears less angry now.

He breaks his rule only this one time, when he sees the most beautiful human he's ever come across (he has seen some humans, okay?). And the said human is drowning. Koo thinks it is his place to help and gain an opportunity to /learn/.

After another deep release of the air from the human's lungs, their eyes meet again. The human finally looks calmer now, which Koo takes as a good sign. But then the human turns around and starts walking towards the forest. Again.

The problem is that Koo never really talked to any human. To anyone in general, aside from his mother, who kept him safe along with all her offspring for the first years of their lives. Not to mention that merpeople language is very different from the one humans use.

Then he looks back at Koo and his expression is bright again, like when he first noticed Koo's presence. "So, if you saved me from drowning and took me here, because that's what you did, right?" Merman simply nods again, sensing that it was a question.

The human turns around and scoops the beach for a while, before he notices Koo's head picking out from the ocean. He smiles (oh, Mother Nature, he really is gorgeous) and runs back to the rocks.

Koo thinks for a minute, staying silent. The human is eyeing him (he clearly doesn’t have much more to do now) all the time, probably still processing if the merman is real or his mind is just playing tricks on him.

But then the human gets up and after spinning in the same spot for a while, he starts walking towards the beautiful forest of the island. And that is where Koo cannot observe and learn. And that is not fair, because that was the whole plan.

Koo thinks about what to do for a moment, but then he agrees with a nod - a thing he saw humans do a lot. This seems to do the job. The human touches his face, whining loudly at the same time, a gesture that Koo doesn't know nor understand.

The human stops talking harshly the moment he realizes that the person or whoever he's looking at isn't one of his kind. His hand, which was almost in front of Koo's face, is taken back quickly as the human jumps, almost tripping.

The island is small though, he thinks, relieved. Even if he gets lost in this forest, he will get back to the beach at some point. But should he? The more he walks between the exotic trees, the more he's sure that he just imagined the handsome merman.

Even his lips are shaded darkly as if he used a black lipstick. His skin is toned, but still a little paler than Jmn's, which makes a great contrast. Just truly beautiful from head to the end of his fin. Too mesmerising to be real.

Jmn waits for a bit, but nothing changes. Merman is nowhere to be found, even when Jmn walks for a while back and forth alongside the beach, doubting his own navigation skills for a moment. He feels betrayed. And a little stupid too.

The trees there form a circle around an actual pond (turns out the merman isn't a liar), a kind of huge one. For a pond, of course. Rays of daylight that break through forest overstory cause water to sparkle beautifully and Jmn immediately forgets about everything else.

Keep him safe in the middle of nowhere and under the condition Jmn is going to do everything as the merman says. “This is a whole damn circus” says Jmn to himself, right before coming out of the forest shadow. “And I am the main clown.”
