Lockdown Hero no 2 (by popular request): Augustine Courtauld. In 1933 he spent almost 6 months alone at a weather station in Greenland, last few weeks literally buried in. Afterwards he said it would not have suited someone "of a nervous disposition".

100 years ago .on May 20 1922, George Mallory lead the first attempt one Everest. Amazingly his party reached 27,000 ft, just 2000 short of the summit. Henry Morshead lost two fingers to frost bite. "It may get in the way of my tennis" he wrote to the Everest Committee. #Everest

Doug Scott on Kangchenjunga- I don't really go into it in The Last Great Mountain (he was going to bring out his own book as a follow up to The Ogre) but an amazing ascent in 1979, up the route that Dyhrenfurth tried in 1930.

Interesting that Nepali authorties trying to limit luxury items at EBC this year, citing environmental impact. In Mallory era, luxury was a packing case to sit on and a folding table, though climbers did share a portable rubber bath. #Everest #Mallory

Went to excellent Alpine Club Everest anniversary exhibition day before yesterday in London, great artefacts and photographs including Mallory's notes from 1924 and Irvine's ice-axe. You need to book but a real treat if you're interested in Everest.

100 years ago today:Mallory and Somervell slip off to attempt Sangkar Ri, a training climb for the 1922 expedition. Finch and Wakefield join them but retire early. Somervell suffers from the altitude but presses on with Mallory......

A historical curio re. Jan Morris Everest scoop in 1953- this is the original decoded message. British ambassador made a mistake and thought it said that Bourdillon and Tenzing were first to the summit... fortunately he double-checked.

Not sure bout this. Doesn't follow that cos can't be found, someone took bodies. Since 1999 earthquakes and avalanches, Plenty who die at high altitude never found, or found in fragments many years later. #everest #Mallory
