The General Assembly just passed a Resolution to upgrade Palestine's privileges at the United Nations. 143 member states voted in favor.
A few quick facts about what this means. 👇🧵 (1/7)
Overall, this is a big symbolic victory for Palestine, showing a flood of international support.
However, these privileges are all focused on the UN system. This will not have an immediate impact on the situation on the ground, where innocent civilians continue to suffer.
So, what does this resolution do? It elevates the privileges of 🇵🇸 at the 🇺🇳.
These new privileges are both symbolic, like seating amongst Member States, and more tangible, like the right to submit proposals.
First and foremost, this does NOT afford Palestine full member state status at the UN. They are still a non-member observer state.
Full membership requires approval of the UNSC. The US veto last month blocked that.
For a refresh of the process ⤵️
Annex letter (l) explains the crucial difference between Palestine's elevated status & full UN membership.
1⃣ Palestine will not have a vote in the GA
2⃣Palestine cannot run for membership of UN bodies like the UNSC or ECOSOC.
Annex letter (l) was added yesterday as clarification, after concern about the way this vote could be used to slash UN funding under a 1990 U.S. law.
This statute bars US funds to any UN entity that grants the PLO the same standing as a member state.
The New Agenda for Peace is out! 🇺🇳
Still a bit confused with what this entails? You can read the full publication in the link below, but here's a quick 🧵 that overviews the 5 key areas of recommendation, and 12 points of action. (1/6)
Annex letter (l) addresses the 1990 statue. But 25 GOP Senators intro'd a new piece of legislation this week which would extend the 1990 law to include the privileges this vote awarded.
This is something to watch in the coming weeks.
Horrific findings in the new report from the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel.

Even in the near certain outcome of a U.S. veto, the Palestinians are hoping for 14 votes in favor (which is not a given) to further isolate the US at the UN.
This question will likely be brought to a UNSC vote on April 18.

Our key takeaway? It is difficult to see how the UN can help bring the parties back to negotiations if it does not appoint a new envoy for Cyprus.

Palestine is currently a non-member observer state at the UN 🇺🇳
This means they are recognized as a sovereign state and can participate as an "observer" in the GA.
However, their participation is limited. They cannot vote, run for the UNSC, etc.

on the devastating fighting in Sudan and what the int'l community can/should do.
Now, how realistic is it that Palestine obtains full membership? Not very.
This process will likely get stuck at step 3, as the U.S. will almost certainly end up vetoing the resolution if it comes to a vote.
Regardless, supporters of 🇵🇸 are hopeful they can obtain a symbolic victory.
In 2011, the PA first submitted a request for full membership. There was not enough support then to even push it to a UNSC vote. Now, the political favor has shifted.

The Zero Draft of the
#PactoftheFuture
is out! This draft is not the final doc, but is a good preview of what we can expect come September.
Let's break down what this means, and what the document entails🧵
This week, the Palestinian Authority submitted a request for full membership status. Obtaining this is a 4⃣ step process.
1) the state submits a letter to the SG to request consideration for membership; the SG passes it along to the UNSC
Another layer is that the 1.2 trillion dollar US Congressional funding bill recently passed writes in consequences for UN full membership
The bill states if Palestinians obtain full membership at the UN, none of the U.S. Economic Support funds can be made available for the PA

Speaking as an Arkansan Jew, stop using my identity as political fodder to spew your hatred. Antisemitism is a real and troubling issue, and so is homophobia and transphobia. They are not mutually exclusive.
We deserve better Representatives.
Arkansas - this is an example of real hatred. Antisemitism is real. This new rush to insert liberal political movements into the category of a protected class - LGBTQ, Transgender, etc. - is nothing more than POLITICS that is meant to demonize Christian values. BEWARE
#arpx
2) the UNSC considers whether the state meets the requirements to be a:
"peace-loving state which accept the obligations contained in the present Charter and, in the judgment of the Organization, [is] able and willing to carry out these obligations"
3) The application is either put to a vote or laid aside. To pass a vote it needs nine yes votes and NO VETOES!
4) If it passes, it is sent to the GA. 2/3 membership must vote in favor to obtain full membership.
