This is very cool… I was taught Maths by Mr Mosley when I was at 6th form in 1990. I then taught Mr Mosley’s son A level maths several years later. Today I’ve found out that Mr Mosley is my son’s 6th Form tutor and A level maths teacher!

Sports fixtures at local private schools: ‘you’re on cricket pitch number 6’. How we all laugh as we lament our cricket strip that the local authority lawn mower drove through 20 years ago and we haven’t had the funds to replace. Politics of envy? No, it’s politics of equity.

Is it just me? I just can’t see them being organised enough to deliver all the tests to every school in time for the start of the new term. They couldn’t even deliver the laptops six months after they were promised.

@debrakidd @educationgovuk Apparently standardising to a lower grade isn’t downgrading. Who knew? And in bold type they boast that 96% were the same as the CAG or within one grade, as if the ‘within one grade’ bit isn’t the part that screwed over thousands of students.

@AutisticCallum_ @Sara_Rose_G Don’t know if I’m autistic (v. high probability) but this happens to me regularly! This week at Zumba someone asked why one of the others wasn’t there. I said ‘it’s her husband’s birthday’. I went to school with him 35 years ago. Haven’t seen him since. Quickly added ‘I think’.

@Samfr Some of the data-obsessed seem to forget that students are human beings who don’t perform uniformly on the day for a myriad of reasons. Would love to see anyone in any profession predict human performance with 100% accuracy. It’s not possible.

An update… They offered to lower it to £11K or single ad to £1500, which begs the question - why were you trying to rob an extra £6K off us in the first place? They know this is tax payers’ money. It’s just not on.

@jshmtn At one school my head said he couldn’t ‘allow’ me to go to a good friend’s husband’s funeral paid or unpaid as he wasn’t immediate family (the policy). I told him I would be going and he could deal with me afterwards. Imagine not being there for a friend on a day like that.

Would it be better for UK schools do just ditch school uniforms completely? Stories almost daily now about how parents are disgusted with one uniform rule or another, then you have the cost issue etc. is it worth it? Other countries don’t have them and seem to do ok?

@miss_mcinerney They’re also forgetting how many staff were very ill and that we were already having to send year groups home as there weren’t enough staff. On the day before the government announced the closure I was the only member of SLT left in school. We only had two year groups in.

Was just having a coffee at an event in London when another delegate came up to me and said ‘I’m not sure if you remember me but you used to teach me’. I do remember - it was 28 years ago! She was year 7 when I started in 1995!

A happy ending… we put our ad on the free DfE site and were very grateful for lots of reposts on here. Yesterday we interviewed two teachers who were both great. Delighted to have employed a great Art teacher for January. Phew!

@DanielBundred As behaviour lead, the amount of times I’ve seen an incident escalate into something huge because a teacher has triggered a reaction that was completely avoidable, if only they had read the child’s profile on what not to say/do to avoid said situation is ridiculous.

@TabitaSurge I have been there (not a stroke but severe brain illness) and was sent home multiple times. Ended up completely deaf, almost blind and unable to walk before I was taken seriously. Thankfully caught in time for all to be reversible, but shouldn’t have got so far before being seen

@Strickomaster At another school I asked if I could arrive 1/2 hr late so I could take my son to first day of school. They said no because ‘then everyone would ask’. So? As it happened I was working at a different school in September and they said ‘of course! Why wouldn’t we let you go?’

On what was the last day of GCSEs for many of our students, one of our invigilators came to find me to show me a message a student had written on the Physics formula sheet. My heart sank as I wondered what had been written, and then I saw this… we have the best exams team!

@RogersHistory If the teacher is genuinely ‘not up to it’ and it is already known by your boss, then a strong support package should already have been put in place. If not, they are shirking their responsibility and just indulging in toxic gossip.

@adamboxer1 Those on SLT without significant HOD experience can sometimes make the HOD role far more difficult/pressurised than it needs to be for others (especially in a core subject) by making decisions without the benefit of a HOD lens.

@ScottPughsley Another one… kids were making 2-minute timers for a project. Some had made water-based timers and were asking how they would bring water into school. I said ‘don’t worry about bringing in water because I’ve got two massive jugs’. Thought the TA was going to die.

@DrDavidBoyce It’s a tool. It’s OK to understand things AND also use a tool. I don’t think they were around when I was at school, but as an adult I always visualise the SDT triangle when calculating (usually on a long road trip) even though I have a maths degree with a heavy physics content.

@bennewmark It was all a show. We knew when they were coming so spent weeks perfecting and practising our ‘Ofsted lessons’. A specialist saw an A level lesson of mine & said it was the ‘best he’d ever seen’ -we’d practised it 4 times. Students had even planned which q’s they’d ask and when!

School trips can sometimes be pretty stressful to organise, but I’m really having the best time with our year 11’s skiing in Andorra. Makes all the planning worthwhile. If you’ve never been on a school residential, have a go!

This is so true. Attempting to ‘fix behaviour’ is like applying a tiny sticking plaster on a huge gaping wound. Any incoming government must address the criminal lack of funding and provision for complex needs and SEMH.

@Strickomaster Some of us from non-English backgrounds have families that do no fit the very narrow definition of ‘close family’. We may also come from cultures where non-attendance at a funeral is deeply disrespectful. Not only is it archaic, it is discriminatory.

Well that was a day! So much rain that parts of the ceiling gave way in a couple of areas - luckily nowhere near the students! Thank goodness we closed early. The roads now are impassable in many areas now. Just one week to go!
