The idea that distant entangled particles "can influence each other instantaneously" is a common myth: QM doesn't actually require any spooky-action-at-a-distance! Instead, entangled particles each carry locked-up information, accessible only when they interact directly.

Locality is the idea that an object can only be influenced by its immediate surroundings, and that interactions cannot propagate faster than the speed of light. In quantum mechanics, locality is challenged by the phenomenon of entanglement, where two distant particles can share

Wigner’s friend won’t prove reality doesn’t exist, but could test many-worlds v Copenhagen collapse. The beauty of thought experiments is that they’re far-fetched yet advance science. @DavidDeutschOxf ’s Wigner’s friend extension led to quantum computing!

A group of physicists wants to use artificial intelligence to prove that reality doesn’t exist. They want to do this by running an artificial general intelligence as an observer on a quantum computer. I wish this was a joke. But I’m afraid it’s not.

Quantum Paradoxes, a series where we resolve quantum paradoxes using the tools of quantum computing, is back with more episodes each Wednesday—the first of which correlates the famous Schrödinger’s Cat experiment with quantum superposition. 1/2

@KAleksovski Imagine two particles, A and B, are fully entangled. We do something to particle A, storing "locked up" info at A's location. This info can only be "unlocked" (i.e. accessed by measurements) using particle B, but it is locally stored at A. See also:

Local QM is fully consistent with Bell's theorem: Bell only rules out hidden variable models, not all local theories. I'll explain this & resolve the EPR paradox in an upcoming @qiskit YouTube video, based on @DavidDeutschOxf 's 1999 paper: .

@SPortoghesi @DavidDeutschOxf That's exactly the common misconception, perpetuated in research papers, courses and popular expositions of quantum theory. Even if particles are entangled, we can fully describe their individual states when using the right mode of description. See also:

Today I got a Facebook memories "On this day" reminder of my sister @Elena__Violaris 's status from 9 years ago, where she spoke about my "oscar-wilde inspired essay [that] shows literature and physics can be reconciled". Amusingly, I've written literature-inspired physics essays,

My new @qiskit video is about the quantum pigeonhole #paradox , which claims that a fundamental principle of mathematics is violated by #quantum mechanics. Find out how to count pigeons on a #quantumcomputer 🔢and code the thought experiment yourself 👩‍💻:

@ZacconeAlessio @DavidDeutschOxf I think quantum computing is a nice example of how a (presently) completely infeasible thought experiment catalysed proposals for technology that there’s a global effort to actually build today (regardless of how long until it’s large-scale & useful) :)

Is there any point in a new interpretation of quantum theory if it has equivalent empirical predictions to other interpretations? There’s been some discussion / talks at the Vienna Quantum Foundations Conference ( #vqf24 ) regarding potential empirical divergences of

Welcome to my office! It was fun to have a quick chat with @OxUniMaths about what I’m up to in there. (Time has indeed flown since then and the paper draft in the background is now on arXiv!)

We've spent the marvellous month of May travelling the Andrew Wiles Building, home to @OxUniMaths , to find out what mathematicians actually do, and why. And we've just arrived at @maria__violaris ' office. Maria has time on her hands. Quantum time. Me and My Maths - Part 2.
