No teacher has ever said to me “I’m doing this for my learners with SEND and it’s working well”. They have said “I’ve introduced this into my teaching & it’s really helping the learners with SEND, amongst others”. The best inclusion happens at the whole-class level #inclusion

The problem with the SENDCO role is it’s too easy to get stuck behind a desk. EHCP applications, annual reviews, external referrals & access arrangements are essential but they must balanced by things that make today better for pupils with SEND and the adults working with them

I’ll never know the same things as the parents of children with SEND. Good things happen when parents/carers and educators listen to each other and work together, cooperatively and with trust.

In meetings I used to refer to parents as ‘Mum’ or ‘Dad’. I only realised how annoying parents find this when I started using Twitter. I haven’t done it since. I just ask what they’d like me to call them. Thanks parents! @Lisa_SEND @mum_sheffield @SENwarriormum @pdadaduk

There’s too much negative language around SEND. We now use ASC not ASD and person-first language where we should (ie student with an EHCP, not EHCP student). I’d like ‘intervention’ to become ‘tuition’ (or similar) and SEN to become ‘additional support’. Would love thoughts.

I'm interested in the schools I work in having a parent advocate for SEND/a group of parents who meet termly to discuss provision for SEND with the SENDCO. Not a Governor - more an 'in the loop' parent/carer. Does your school have this? Any wisdom you can pass on? Please RT #SEND

Every middle leader should consider the SENDCO role on their way to Head/Deputy Headship. If the highest decision makers in a school have been (or are!) the SENDCO, students with SEND are more likely to have truly inclusive school leadership.
