So
@ThaoEatWorld
and I are researching why people teach others to ferment and how that might contribute to community building. If you know of anyone who teaches hands-on fermentation workshops in Europe, please help us get in touch with them! 💕
Thinking about the time a professor commented 'please justify in the final version' on my draft and I spent around a 1000 words justifying what I wrote but turns out all she wanted was for me to justify the text alignment 😭
I told someone I spoke English fluently and they were like ‘ok but what language do you THINK in? Surely not English?’. Doesn’t matter pal, I think poorly of you in all 6 languages that I think in.
Watching this video fills me with so much rage. I hope I live to see African nations break free from the shackles of oppressive colonial commerce and regain control over the means of production. May they enjoy the richness of their land and thrive on the fruits of their labour.
My top reasons for moving out of India have been: 1) Indian men 2) a patriarchal society that lets these men get away with inflicting the worst kind of harm on women. Hold them accountable. Lock them up. Impose curfews. Let them earn their right to live in society, idk.
Growing up in India has left me with so much distrust for men in public spaces that I still cant enjoy things like camping, traveling solo, or crowded concerts. And ik I’m not alone in feeling this way. To deny that India has a SA problem is to deny all of our lived experiences.
In the most badass move of the century, my grandmother has just informed me that she wants to pay off the remainder of my student debt with the money she was saving for my wedding. I’m so happy, the tears won’t stop aggggh
Met an Indian professor (with an international career) at the conference here. Five minutes into the conversation:
Him: So you’re Rao as in…?
Me: ??
Him: Where are you from?
Me: Mumbai
Him: Mother tongue?
Me: A mix of at least 3 languages
Him (😩): WHICH CASTE?????
The way Indian men are seething in the comments tells you everything about the state of women’s safety in the country. When people ask why I plan on settling abroad, I tell them honestly that I like walking home in the evening without clenched fists and keys between my fingers.
She is able to walk freely in a country which is not her home.
This person and the replies will explain why.
I am glad she could leave.
Honestly I really wish all our women could just go off somewhere safer.
Since you stole my tweet, I’ll share some unsolicited advice as well. The best thing you can do for your daughters is to teach them how to think for themselves. Help them become independent and responsible adults. Once that’s done, trust them to make their own god damn decisions.
This comment got me thinking. As the father of 2 girls, would I want this for my daughters?
My answer is an emphatic no. Perhaps I AM old fashioned about certain things.
Got engaged to my bf y’day and he naively announced that we lived together (and that our families were welcome to come visit us). The way people’s faces soured at the mention of a live-in relationship, my god! Indian boomers really hate young people living their lives, don’t they
A student asked me today if they can use emojis in their thesis and my first reaction was no absolutely not and then they asked why. I thought for a whole minute but couldn’t come up with a good enough reason so I was like you know what, go ahead, do it 😭
Here it is guys - my PhD thesis in its (almost) final form. 4 years, 75k words, and 7 papers worth of tears, frustration, joy, gratitude, all sitting snug in one big Word document. I did it!
Also,
@madhurarrao
is a star who ended up publishing her master's thesis and was gracious enough to accept me as 2nd author! The pdf is... justified 😉. Check it out: 2/2
Six years ago, this man showed up with a huge batch of handmade, piping hot samosas at a student party in Wageningen. A case of love at first bite hihi
Thanks for the support Twitter but I won’t be dropping any names. Naming and shaming can get toxic real quick and is not something I want to deal with atm. I have forwarded this email to the studios/collectives this artist is associated with. Hopefully that’ll be of some help x
Made my own wedding invites (god bless canva) and accidentally wrote the trademark indian wedding invite line "gifts in blessings only" lines as "gifts only". Parents didn't notice and sent the invites out. I'm excited about the outcome lmao
In three weeks from now I’ll be in India and like clockwork, I’ve been feeling anxious about my weight, skin, hair, tattoos, lack of wedding plans, etc. A stark reminder of why I left in the first place, sigh.
“Oh, you’re doing a PhD? You’ve always been a good student. Pity you didn’t study engineering or medicine” is not the compliment my relatives think it is. It’s annoying and hurtful and makes me very upset.
I’m trying to prove to someone that women being unfairly pushed into taking minutes during meetings is a real thing. If you’ve experienced this yourself or seen it happen to women around you, please interact with this tweet. I really want to show them that I’m not making this up.

Husband made something called egg pups (puffs I think but he insists it’s pups) for breakfast and I think I have a new favourite egg dish. Spicy, puffy, eggy all in one ☺️
@aanand_03
I’m sorry but “hasn’t happened to me” is such a futile thing to say under a tweet describing someone’s lived experience. I’m glad you’ve been spared but that’s not the point here.
Why do Indian incels start arguments under my tweets in Hindi? The audacity to assume that everyone speaks the language they speak lmao. Marathit uttar denar mi aaj pasna aslya yedzavyanna.
I hope the Netherlands will drop its charade of being a progressive, immigrant-friendly country now because progressive, immigrant-friendly countries don’t elect racist, conservative, and Islamophobic people to run the government. It’s as simple as that.
Four years ago, when I had just started freelancing, a veteran science communicator advised me to stick to writing because “audio is best left to native speakers”. Took me a while to get over this (terrible) advice but I think I’m ready to record my first ever audio article.
Idk why Europeans are so surprised when I tell them that eating with fingers involves a lot of technique and etiquette. Do they really think that we just throw fists full of food into our mouths with absolutely no skill or finesse? 🫥
Recently received some unsolicited advice about straightening or typing up my hair to make it look more professional. So here’s a very unprofessional

me: mum’s arriving tomorrow, find all the lighters and hide them
husband: but they’re for lighting candles??
me: she’s not going to buy that
husband: you’re almost 30 why do you need to hi..
me: FIND. AND. HIDE.
Spotted a restaurant with ‘Kerala’ in its name so my curiosity led me in for dinner. Cannot believe that I just had the best beef peralan of my life with freshly made appams in Tokyo!
have stopped calling people up at midnight for their birthdays for a while now so I called my mum only in the morning to wish her and she mentioned that she fell asleep last night holding her phone close to her bec she didn’t want to miss my call in case I rang
@samopriya
On its own, nothing. It’s the “surely not English” bit that annoyed me. Plus, I hadn’t told them that I spoke any other language so they just assumed based on how I looked 🤷🏻♀️
🧵Here are my top 10 food shows on Netflix (in no particular order). Feel free to add yours!
A Nation of Broth - a comic artist and two actors set out to explore soup history and culture in South Korea. Watch for beautifully shot scenes of bubbling stews and fresh ingredients.
tour guide: there’s this indian drama that’s super popular in vietnam!!!
me: oh? which one?
tg: uhh can’t remember the name but it’s about indian culture family values, we love it ☺️
me: 🤔
tg: ah yes, it’s called balika vadhu! amazing show :)
me:
This is some universal women sheit about men of their races, you ask white women they'll say "i want to leave this place coz white men are dangerous, patriarchal, oppress and r*pe" you ask black, east asian, arab, south asian women their answer is literally same.
Do other cultures salt/season their fruit too? I thought everyone did it, especially for tropical fruits, but I once sprinkled salt on my guava at work and my European colleagues lost their minds over it so I guess not?
Dutch academics are showing their true colours over Greta’s support for Palestine and I wish I was surprised. For so many of them, climate change and decolonisation only mean grant money and absolutely nothing else.
My mum’s coming to stay with me for three weeks and I’m filled with wicked delight at the prospect of my father and brother being left to fend for themselves in the kitchen. Especially my father because he’s such a stickler for “freshly cooked” food. Time to learn or perish.
A man just…shoved me into oncoming traffic on a very busy road while calling me a cancer whore and screaming fuck Palestine at me. Right outside Rotterdam Central. I feel lucky to not be hit by a car but what the actual fuck?
My brother recently had a terrible job interview where the hiring manager was v hostile for no reason at all. He’s a whole 6ft tall/23 year old adult but I CANNOT stop fuming at the thought of someone bullying this little baby boy. Once a big sister, always a big sister I guess.
The more I study food waste, the more I am convinced that capitalism and food waste reduction cannot co-exist. The current food system is built to exploit resources; it's built to overproduce. Until we choose the planet and its people over profit, there's no progress to be made.
South Asian friends, if I asked you to prepare 'dal' without any further instructions, what would it contain? Which lentils? Which spices? Any additional must-haves? I'm trying to see (well, show) something 👀
This week has really been a week of good news for me. The Dutch immigration authority recently granted me permanent residence in the EU. After six years of living visa to visa, I feel so light, so free :)
Made fun of my dad all my life for repurposing free bags he got from the kiranawala but now it’s a fashion trend in Europe?? I owe the man an apology lmao
met a friend’s friend today
she (white, tall, blonde, blue eyed): as an expat, my favourite thing about the netherlands is that there’s no racism here :)
me: …
she: well, at least i’ve never experienced it :)
Did your parents teach you how to manage your money (savings, investments, debt, etc)? As an adult in her late 20s trying to figure this stuff out on her own, I sometimes wish my parents had sat me down and explained the basics at least.
Recently met this guy who’s doing a PhD at a Prestigious University™️ and he went on and on about how getting a PhD at his uni is so much harder than anywhere else. At the end of it I was like ‘ok, I’m glad l had it easy:)’ and he looked SO deflated bec I refused to engage lol
What a privilege it was to put my name on the famed
@MaastrichtU
wall(s) of PhD graduates! Not a lot of names on there sound like mine and that made it extra special. Here’s hoping that more women of colour write their names here in the years to come 🩷
Me: You’ve ignored most of my feedback on your draft?
Student: All your comments were “perhaps you could…” and “consider xyz”. The other (male) supervisor’s comments were “do this”, “change that”, etc so I thought that those were mandatory but not yours.
me: 🫠🫠🫠
She said that watching me defend my PhD made her realise how deeply passionate I was about what I do and that I should be able to do it without worrying about debt. Thank u ajji, lysm ♥️
Met a friend who works for Big Oil over dinner and he casually mentioned how much money he makes. The amount was so obscenely big that I had down a whole glass of wine to keep myself from screaming.
Visited a local primary school to see what school meals look like in Finland. I went in expecting potatoes, meatballs, and sandwiches but the kids are eating butter chicken and mixed veg curry for lunch???
My department has a board with all staff’s pictures and it’s been bothering me that literally everyone is one it other than me; even people who’ve joined after. Decided that it was time to stop being bothered and do something about it. (Oh, the things we do to belong!)
I know this isn't a big deal but my papers (all first author publications!) just reached 50 citations. Kinda thrilling to know that my work is actually useful to other researchers in some small way :')
Watched Laapataa Ladies last night and I’m so moved by the sensitive, lucid storytelling. Quite the visual treat too! I hope Kiran Rao has lots more in store for us.
Oh the JOY of this moment! This man - my PhD advisor, prof Aalt Bast - has spoilt me rotten with his doting, big-hearted mentorship over the past 4 years. He’s laid such a solid foundation for my sense of self-worth that I feel nearly bulletproof as I take on Big Academia.
Twenty fkin one years of formal education in English, a whole PhD written and defended in English, a dozen peer reviewed publications in English. Yet, here I am - preparing for an English language proficiency test because “admin requires it” ☺️🔫
Haven’t said anything about what’s happening in India because I don’t have the bandwidth to deal with RW trolls atm but man, the heartbreak and grief are real. I wonder if we and our collective spirit of pluralism will recover from this.
*woman calls out sexism in society*
misogynists: you wouldn’t dare to say that about your own father and brother would you
*woman gives specific examples of sexism from her own family*
misogynists: how dare you say that about your own father and brother you ungrateful cow

I have a recruiter in my LinkedIn DMs offering me an unpaid internship alongside my PhD because he thinks it would be a perfect addition to my CV. Tempted to respond with a GIF. Which one should I send?
@OpenAcademics

I’ve joined Bumble BFF to meet other PhD students in my city. Is this weird? I just want someone to eat cake with every time one of my (or their) papers gets cited lol
The way pets get new names is absolutely insane. Sometimes when Pip meows at me, I ask her “kay pahije Pipi la?” (‘what does Pip want?’, in Marathi). My bf, who doesn’t speak the language, has picked this is up and is now calling our cat PIPILA 😭
Ok, I must add that Marathi people also continue with this goofiness when they name their pets because why else would I know a fish named Nilyabhau and a cat named Minakshitai Patil
If you, as an Indian person, think that Slumdog’s Oscar was problematic (bc it’s a story about the oppressed told by the oppressor) and feel differently about the Elephant Whisperer win, I need you to reflect on your very upper caste idea of oppression.
I think the term itself (live-in) is an Indian invention? Elsewhere it’s not even considered different enough to be classified as a whole type of relationship in itself lol
