Academic life hack: If you're giving an online presentation and want to be able to see your notes without looking down, the app 'Transparent Note' lets you overlay notes on top of your presentation while still seeing the rest of the screen! 🤯

I've just submitted the first paper of my PhD for publication! 🎉 It's a big experimental 3-study registered report, with 2 complete studies (N = 773) and 1 proposed follow-up. This is a good day!
#AcademicMilestone
Props to the students today who spontaneously called out "BABY DON'T HURT ME" after I asked "what is love?" during a lecture on sexual romantic relationships
Things I never realised would feature so heavily in a career in academia:
• Doodle polls
• Gantt charts
• Writing to-do lists on mini whiteboards
• JISC mailing lists
• Expenses claim forms
• Laminated name badges
• University sandwiches
• Room booking systems
• Twitter
There's been a lot of ~discussion~ on Academic Twitter recently about positionality, reflexivity, and ethics in qualitative research. This feels like a good time to remind quantitative researchers that this applies to *all* paradigms. [see our paper, ]
Wild new research tool alert!🤯If you plug a research question into , it uses AI to not only find relevant papers but pulls out ANSWERS from the papers. Adding to my list of things that would've changed the game at the start of my PhD
#AcademicTwitter
Reviews back for a qualitative content analysis paper:
Reviewer 1: "There is literally no statistical analysis. Therefore, this paper contains no results."
Reviewer 2: "the sample size is far too small"
👍 Cool 👍
Over the past year, I've been a participant in different interview studies to help me get an 'insider' perspective on qualitative research and understand what it really feels like to be a participant. It has been SO insightful. Some thoughts! 1/8 🧵
Another day, another cool research tool that's blown my mind. If you enter your favourite paper into the
@ConnectedPapers
website, it produces a web of interrelated work (including citations, date published etc). So nifty for scoping reviews!
Re-sharing this nifty tool because it's legit changed my academic life. You upload your paper and it your compares in-text citations with your reference list, flags deviations from APA formatting, and highlights missing refs. Amazing!
#AcademicChatter
Do I know anyone whose PhD contained *only* null results? Given the bias we have for finding sexy sig results, I'm now getting twitchy about the idea of defending a thesis that reads like "I did some stuff and...I found nothing". (Asking for a friend aka me)

This morning a woman was quickly running towards my bus stop so I asked the driver to wait for her. As she blindly ran past us, I was reminded that some people just run along roads for, like, fitness
After spending all morning coding 5 hours of focus groups in which students discussed their experiences of online teaching, I'm convinced that all research that wants to say something meaningful about the student experience should be qualitative
DELIGHTED to share that today I passed my PhD viva with minor corrections! 🎉Huge thank you to my examiners Dr
@novadsmith
, Dr
@DrJTJohnson
and Prof Robbie Sutton. And my supervisors Dr Russ Hutter and Prof Mark Conner. I'm
#PhDone
and I couldn't be happier 🎉🥲
Gave a lecture today on the philosophy of science and afterwards a student said “so if I put a vase on a stool, does that make it a table?”. I’ve thought about literally nothing since
After spending hours interviewing people about their perspectives on psychology measures I cannot stress enough how the science reform movement would benefit from simply ✨talking to people✨
Me to my supervisors: please be brutal with your feedback on my work! I can take it! I really want to learn :)
Them: I'm not sure about this sentence

What do lay people actually make of the measures we use in psychological research? We interviewed 23 people and spoiler alert, they had a lot to say. New preprint (stage 2 registered report) with Joseph Mason,
@Flavio_Azevedo_
and Amy Palmer!
I see a lot of Psychology ECRs on Twitter discuss the extortionate costs of conference registration/travel. Throughout the first year of my PhD I started compiling a list of travel bursaries suitable for postgrads. Here's a short thread of open funding opportunities: 1/9
Working from home life hack: Every morning Hugh and I have been getting up, getting dressed, and walking a 10-minute 'commute' to work around the block. We do the same on an evening to 'go home again' and it has been *life changing* for establishing home-work boundaries
It’s publication week of my pride and joy, A Feminist Companion to Social Psychology! with
@OpenUniPress
& Wendy Stainton Rogers
(And yes, I did purchase mini book earrings✨)
RT this post for a chance to win a free copy of the book. Winner decided at random on 1st Dec!📚
If your new year's resolution is to embed more

5 years ago today was my A-level
#ResultsDay
. I got a C in Psychology and was advised to rethink my degree subject
In other news, my Psychology PhD is going well 🌟
This blew up a bit - hi new followers! Come for the academic banter, stay for the science chats, pedagogy questions, and photos of my pretty stationery 👋
Turning a thesis chapter into a paper and thought I was being clever by using a shortcut to replace all occurrences of "thesis" with "paper" until I got to "it was hypopapered that..." 🤪
In response to discussions about replicability of qualitative research, I argue that focusing on replication is the wrong standard for what quality/rigour/robustness looks like for this type of research
I recently read a full 2019 PhD thesis online, emailed the author to say I enjoyed it and I liked her methods. She's now sent me a huge bank of resources (including scans of book chapters, her own notes & useful papers) and we're meeting up at a conference next year💘

5. The single most effective question in any interview (for me) was: "Is there anything else you think is important for me to know, that I haven't yet asked about?". In some cases, this opened up a whole new discussion and felt like my voice was being centred 6/8
Last week I had never used R before and now after 3 classes with
@emilynordmann
&
@LisaDeBruine
I have managed to load up my own dataset from a study, wrangle it, and make my first ggplot 😭 I'm disproportionately proud! Thank you
#PsyTeachR
people!
So, news! I'm staying at
@LeedsPsyc
as a permanent T&S Lecturer in Psychology 🎉 and (the best bit!), I'll be working on my
@leedsteaching
Fellowship and the 'Curriculum Redefined' project in psychology, which is a big overhaul of how/why/what we teach across the university
✨ I am SO excited to finally share our new preprint: "Navigating Open Science as Early Career Feminist Researchers"
Link:
[overly enthusiastic & appreciative thread incoming] 1/6
I am so, SO happy to have been selected as the 2021 winner of the Wilbert J. McKeachie Teaching Excellence Award by
@TeachPsych
😭 I love the teaching part of my job so much and I'm so excited to celebrate at the ACT conference!
Best start to the week ever.

Just to say - this doesn't feel like a particularly fair, kind, or constructive way of starting a conversation about this paper. If you have specific concerns, they can be articulated in a way that doesn't give the vibe of starting a pile-on on an ECR who's done (IMO) a fun study
My lockdown goals on 4th April
• Become an expert in R
• Finish my PhD 2 years early
• Learn (at least) 3 new languages
• Get a top-tier publication
My lockdown goals on 4th May
• Keep myself alive
• ... Netflix?
I got promoted! Woohoo! So grateful to be at an institution that values and celebrates pedagogical research, collaborative scholarship, and contributions to student education ☺️
Congratulations to RitPoSE members on their recent promotions success! Dr Richard Harris (
@HarrisR_Psy
) is now an Associate Professor and Dr Maddi Pownall (
@maddi_pow
) is now a Grade 8 Lecturer

The process of confronting, celebrating, and centring researcher bias is necessary for all methodologies, including quantitative research. New paper with
@themichjam
and
@GiselaGovaart
, where we provide a rationale, worked examples, and reflexive prompts
Finally, participating in a study means talking with a stranger, who you may never speak to again, about stuff which can get personal. This is a big ask and can feel exposing. This all has made me realise the importance of attending to these feelings properly in our research 8/8
So pleased that our paper "Navigating
#OpenScience
as Early Career Feminist Researchers" is now published in Psychology of Women Quarterly! It has been such a joy to work on this over the past year with a team of *amazing* ECRs.
Over the past 5 days I have learned that the very best way to cure a PhD writing block is to take time off, block email notifications, drink flat whites, eat brownies, and be outdoors for a bit 😊
I have news! My new popular science book "Absent Minds: Reclaiming the Missing History of Women in Psychology" is forthcoming with
@headlinepg
! The book will tell the stories of women in psychology who have been written out of history. A dream come true!
Some news! I'm VERY excited to share that I have signed a book contract with
@OpenUniPress
🎉. 'A Feminist Companion to Social Psychology', coauthored with Professor Wendy Stainton-Rogers, will be out next year! This is the first book in a new series of 'Feminist Companions'. Eek!
New paper! So proud of this one. Students wrote postcards to their future graduating self in the first week of term as a transitions activity. I share reflections and examples of the funny, heart-warming loveliness that they wrote here:
New paper with
@HannahRSlack
! There's a lot of literature on PhD wellbeing and academic staff wellbeing, but what about people who straddle this border? We explored the experiences of Graduate Teaching Assistants and show how complex this identity can be
Now out in Royal Society Open Science! We critically review the evidence for teaching open and reproducible scholarship and the associated student outcomes. A monumental
@FORRTproject
team effort with
@Flavio_Azevedo_
and 70 collaborators across the world!
My first sole-authored paper is now out in
@PWQ4U
! In the teaching brief, I share 3 interactive activities that I use to teach feminist psychology in an asynchronous online context using
@padlet
. I also share some tips for using Padlet in online teaching👩🏫
2. The opening few minutes of an interview are essential, from a participants' point of view. Tell me who you are, what are you hoping to get out of this, what you need from me. The best interviews were ones that started with "so, the point of this is..." Give some context! 3/8
Today is my first day of my PhD at Uni of Leeds. It’s finally happening. I am so (very nearly) ready. Any first day words of wisdom, Twittersphere?!
#PhDchat
News! SO excited to be starting a Leeds Institute for Teaching Excellence
@leedsteaching
Fellowship for the next two years with
@HarrisR_Psy
&
@diervilla
on "Global Citizenship in the University Curriculum". This work will involve research, new resources & sharing best practice🥳
My 22/23 academic year resolution is to think more creatively about pedagogical research, to avoid endless student surveys. Super excited to see how this postcard/time capsule project plays out in induction week 🌈📝📮
Now out! Students viewed authentic assessments (e.g., policy briefs, case studies) to be exciting and novel but also unfamiliar and anxiety-provoking. So there is a trade off between creativity in assessment and psychological safety
Buzzing that our paper "Balancing pedagogical innovation with psychological safety? Student perceptions of authentic assessment" is now in press at Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education! with Steph Wake,
@diervilla
, and
@HarrisR_Psy
