NDP loyalists are getting upset when it is pointed out, but it is simply a fact.
Icons such as Tommy Douglas and Jack Layton didn't earn their places in history by being Liberal party fartcatchers like Jagmeet Singh.
They stood up on principle.
What NOT to say in a subway full of riders to the pregnant woman who politely asked for a seat “you’re pregnant, not sick”. All of us standing within earshot spent the next 3 stops explaining how inappropriate, inconsiderate and rude he was.
7 years later, so much has changed, but my heart is still filled with love, hope and optimism that together we can build a better world. Think about the community, city, province, country and world you want and work to make it happen.

Toronto just passed a plan to implement a Vacant Home Tax. The purpose of housing shouldn’t be to boost an international investment portfolio. Housing is about people. This could add thousands of units back to the market and fill vacant houses in our neighbourhoods.
For 7 years I’ve faught for a tiny change to Toronto water budget to make large industrial water polluters pay the full cost to clean effluent. Last year lost on a tie. This year....PASSED.
These two beautiful red foxes showed up this AM in construction site behind Christie Pits Park - downtown TO. I’m going to name them Razzle and Dazzle.
10 years ago today my dad died. It was a painful loss, but our community & country sent us love in a time of sorrow. I’m eternally grateful. His goodbye letter was meant to console & inspire us to build a more loving Canada. Join us tonight for a concert.
Again, TO Deputy Mayor concerned with expanding washroom access in winter because of homeless people using them. Parks General Manager giving great answers - public washrooms are for the public - that means everyone.
City Council debate can get heated. As long as it’s respectful, it’s healthy. But yesterday it turned ugly. During the debate on winterizing washrooms, the deputy mayor equated more winter washrooms with encouraging homeless encampments. This is wrong practically and ethically.
So Ford government own a web domain used by a private sector industry lobby group to advance a government policy that will cost taxpayers $1B and our Attorney General is advertising the campaign. What the hell is going on at Queen’s Park?
Woke up this AM thinking about my dad. Thinking about the world and the road ahead. In honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day, I don't think he'd mind me sharing a short recording of a story he told me days before he died.
From a government choking our public education system of resources, downloading childcare costs, and on the eve of a strike in public schools - nobody believes you care about teachers or our kids.
Hearn Power Station secretly sold for a song to well connected Tory insiders. No transparency, no open process, no RFP & no competition. A key Portlands property & no engagement with the City or Federal gov't. No consultation with Waterfront Toronto or the public.
You interfered in a criminal court case.
You fired your Attorney General for not letting your corporate cronies off the hook.
You shut down a parliamentary investigation into your corruption.
You're covering up something. And we will find out what.
Privatization is a trap, a grift of capitalism, promising more for less, but after governments give up assets that make it impossible to preform a service - prices soar and public money is siphoned from the pockets of workers to corporate profits. And we keep falling for it.
I was stoped last week by a mom in an SUV driving her teenage daughter to school who complained to me that we had turned Shaw street into a “pedestrian and cycling mall”. I wish my answer was less nuanced and more direct “That was the goal”.
Tell me this isn’t the best “traffic” you’ve ever seen. A school “bike bus” in Barcelona, happens each Friday & has been growing from an initial 5 kids when it started. Safety in numbers — do you really think you couldn’t do this in your city? Via

Premier Ford calls Toronto Public Health a “bastion of lefties” says they spend ridiculous amounts of money - like a competition for condom packages. Province and City in war over cuts to public health which Toronto pegs at $1 billion over ten years
#onpoli
Let’s recap. In first 5 months, Doug and his team have now attacked: public schools, children’s education, the environment, child welfare, green industry, democracy, tenants, welfare recipients, universities...
When people are forced to work because they can’t afford to take an unpaid sick day, the employer is putting them and their colleagues at risk. When a government cancels paid sick days for all workers in the province, they are putting all of us at risk.
This didn't happen without the hard work of thousands of people who raised their voices, stood up, and fought back. Organizing can have impact. Together, we can have impact.
BREAKING: Premier Doug Ford confirms his government is reversing cuts to municipal public health, child care cuts, etc. to Ontario’s municipalities, pausing Bill 108.
#onpoli
“Since the start of the pandemic, Toronto’s city-run LTC homes have reported an average of 3.2 deaths per 100 beds compared to a rate of 11.2 at for-profit homes in the city...”.
Treat long-term care like health care, and then resource it appropriately.
In a city with 1% vacancy, this is very dangerous. Landlords already illegally evict tenants through renovictions & sleazy claims - all in the name of profit. Shame on Ontario Conservatives for helping them ruin people’s lives. And how does this possibly boost rental housing?
Premier Doug Ford’s government is looking to make it easier for landlords to evict tenants by slashing the waiting periods for eviction notices and allowing private bailiffs to remove renters.
@robertbenzie
:
City Councillors workload cannot be compared to MPs and MPPs. We have far higher case loads (people call us about more stuff), a larger legislative agenda to cover (no portfolios, we must each cover every issue) and in goriwng wards we also cover development. You cannot compare.
Ontario must realize, it is not Ford alone - it is his caucus, his Staff, lobbyists, businesses and individual supporters that give him such destructive powers - they can take away their support anytime they want. It’s time to fight again via

My thanks to the residents of University Rosedale who have put their trust and faith in me. I will fight for a Toronto where nobody is left behind, where we are a leader fighting climate change and building opportunity for all communities.

A Toronto deputy mayor just characterized the vacant property tax as a tax on “homeowners”. Sure, they own a house, but I’d argue - if nobody lives in it - it’s not a home.
Home office mishap. Conference call with councillors & staff disrupted by toddlers😔. I left room to referee. Door locked behind me😠. Didn’t have a key😡. Only keyed door inside my home 🤯.I’m no locksmith. Had to get back to the call🤬. So I did what I had to do. 😎
This must stop. The actions taken in Lamport, yesterday in AP, and previously in TB escalated the situation needlessly. Directions from the City brought us to this point. This is not a compassionate and humane approach to housing. It's violence to make poverty invisible.
LISTEN: Premier Doug Ford reacts to being booed last night at the opening of the Special Olympics Youth Games in Toronto on TSN.
"Boy...you know something? I haven't heard that much energy in a long time. Boy that's the first event I've ever been booed."

Dad took me to labour protests and picket lines from an early age. Those demonstrations had purpose and they didn’t infringe on the rights of others. They did not promote hate. What we are seeing in Ottawa and across the country is different.
Just 2 speakers into the debate, and team Tory vote to end debate on judicial inquiry into violence at Lamport and other park encampment removals stopping all others from speaking to the item. 🤬 These pictures are real, it happened and nobody wants to talk about it.
We are now learning that Mayor Tory has know about this for several days and has not brought it to council to prepare. This is totally irresponsible. We need a better champion for TO.
We will continue to fight for love, hope, justice, for equality, for a clean environment, for a better Ontario - we will just need to fight a lot harder for the next four years.
Green candidate Greg “the Green Man” De Luca says he is neither “pro-choice” nor “pro-life.”
He says “medical professionals and family members” should be required to sign permission slips before women are allowed to go ahead with an abortion.

Reports coming from city staff that todays provincial announcement MAY have inadvertently killed the Toronto Green Standard for new buildings. If this is true, the province just made it impossible for TO to get to net zero by 2040, 2050 or 2100. This needs to be fixed.
Devastating news about the death of a 18 yr old cyclist tonight. This death was avoidable. The City must change its priorities like cities across the world have and put road safety first.
Growing up in an intergenerational household was a blessing. My Ama was the heart and soul of our busy home - for me, my parents, cats and a generation of Toronto progressives. I will miss our late night talks, sharing her kitchen & her endless support
Premier Doug Ford addresses more than 1,000 Rural Ontario Municipalities Association delegates. Ford says he calls Toronto "the bubble" so it's good to talk to "real people."

Second, public toilets should be a human right. Most 24h restaurants are closed, so people experiencing homelessness have few options to practice basic hygiene. While our city struggles with a homelessness crisis, we still need to meet basic human needs. Washrooms included.
Today 15,000 Toronto residents got vaccinated. Tomorrow will be the same. We will continue to work together to overcome this pandemic. Weekly protests for over a year have tried to disrupt our city & have harassed our neighbours & businesses. We have stood up to hate & division

Life is filled with moments of joy & sadness. If your response is tears of joy or a deep cry - own it. It is a healthy response & don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. I cried when my daughter came into the world, when my dad left it & every time I read “Oh the places you’ll go”
#TrudeauCried
, as started by a Toronto Sun columnist, is a new low. The list began with Trudeau crying at his father's funeral. Then at Auschwitz. Then at the Quebec mosque shooting victims' funerals. Even Fox News rarely goes this far, Heather Mallick:
If 2/3 is needed overturn veto - the magic number is 7. If mayor can convince 7 councillors to support them - they could do whatever they wanted without question. That concentration of power and democratic deficit should concern everyone - left or right.
Toronto City Council has requested help from the provincial government to build housing, fight climate change, fund infrastructure, address the homeless crisis, and fund transit - we never ask for centralizing power and erode the voices of the community in debate. :(
There’s a frightening tone and pattern developing in Ontario that has moved beyond any rational political debate. I really hope there’s a move by reasonable PC members to try to restore some sanity to the political discourse of their party. If you’re out there, I hope you succeed

A 70% cut to forest fire fighting in Ontario budget thanks to Ford and company. Curious how this will fit with climate change adaptation. I’m going to guess this ends very badly for northern Ontario.
Is it just me? I find the notion of “slow cooker liners” repulsive. Just add a small layer of cheap plastic to cook your food in so that you can throw it away because you don’t wanna rinse a pot.
Ontario Place has been undergoing partial renovations for years, but Ford has scraped the plans for what? Nobody knows. Board disbanded. Public haven’t been consulted. Power given to his friend. This stinks.
Today, thousands of students in Ontario taught us all an important lessons - stand up for what you believe, being silent is being complicit. Thank you. I hope the PC caucus heard them.
A couple years ago Toronto considered a stormwater management fee — used by lots of other cities — but Mayor Tory and council rejected this tool to reduce stormwater runoff and flooding. Fee was cost neutral but would be incentive to property owners to reduce runoff.
I’ve got two kids about to go into Kindergarden. I wish these two monkeys, and all Ontario kids, the best start possible, not packed classrooms and less time with teachers. Early learning for our next generation of leaders is too important to Ontario’s futures.
Small class sizes mean big benefits for students. We can’t let Doug Ford take us backwards and put more kids in crowded classes. Ontario’s students deserve so much better.

NEW: statement from Premier Doug Ford. "The Federal Government encouraged illegal border crossers to come into our country. This has resulted in a housing crisis, & threats to the services that Ontario families depend on. This mess was 100% the result of the Federal Government."
Third, we are relying on deliveries like never before. Many drivers are on the road for hours at a time with NO access to washrooms. It is not fair for us to order in dinner, bang our pots & pans for front line workers, then lock our doors when these people need to pee.
Absolutely none of this surprises me. Ford to spend billions to enrich friends and destroy farmland. Friends with benefits? An inside look at the money, power and influence behind the Ford government’s push to build Highway 413 -
Toronto has a street with more bikes then cars. This was build and improved over time. The intervention isn’t fancy, but it works. It also have lots of help along the way. 🧵
We need to re-evaluate our priorities as a city. We should restore the vehicle registration fee and put it towards improving Transportation in Toronto - roads, Vision Zero and TTC. Expect this to come to a vote during the budget.
29 years ago on December 6th, 14 women were killed at a Montreal university. Today we remember them. Still, Toxic masculinity, sexism & inequality continues. We must renew the call to fight gender violence and inequality in our homes, work places and with friends.
@whiteribbon
News from me. 🧵Torontonians want to build a city they can be proud of, a Toronto that offers a promising future for themselves and their families.
In a city as wealthy as ours, we have a choice. We can choose to address the widening inequality and take care of each other.
Releasing something late afternoon Friday is a blatant attempt to bury it. More cuts to schools and children by Ford and company. It’s like they are completely giving up on future generations.
@LisaThompsonMPP
Breaking: Late Friday, Ford Government sent out masses of memos to School Boards outlining programs that would be cut or axed. So much for their so-called consultation: Ford had already decided where to cut before that even wrapped up....
#OntEdu
It is shocking that amidst a global pandemic the Ford government announces today they will proceed with millions in cuts to public health including communicable disease response.
How could Mayor John Tory not help the City prepare for the bombshell today? He admits he knew and did nothing to prepare. Instead allowed city to descend into chaos.
Listening to

discussion about full day kindergarden with my toddler Phoebe who is entering kindergarden in September. This is an investment in the next generation. In families. In innovation. In our economy. An investment in Phoebe. Doug is trying to throw this away
Trust me, I know childcare can be hard to find, but we don’t start cramming more kids in with less supervision. Late today Ford & company announced changes to private in home childcare that will reduce the level of supervision. This could seriously put children in danger.

Tory and I disagree on some stuff, that’s no secret, but on this fight, I welcome his support and stand with him. We cannot let Ford put residents health and wellbeing at risk. We cannot let him take childcare choices away from families. We cannot let this continue.
“Ward by ward and door to door, I will be reminding government MPPs that they did not seek or receive a mandate to cut public health or child-care,” said Toronto Mayor John Tory.
Trump just told the proud boys to “stand by”. Let’s not forget what this racist and dangerous language does to individuals in Canada. We are not immune to this. It’s our job to stand by to stand up against anti-Black, anti-Indigenous, anti-semitic and misogynistic forces here.

There is no fundamental law of the universe that says for profit developers are the only people who can build housing. Governments used to be the developer. Neo-Liberalism stole it from us and after decades the housing markets has only gotten worse.
2 Years ago today, Premier Ford & company slashed funding to Public Health Units. We’ve all seen their importance since then. Now it’s time for the Premier to correct another mistake - reinstate

and focus vaccinations on those most at risk.
Denying access to washrooms denies people of their dignity - if it’s your delivery driver, your daughter (I yet acknowledged the gender lens to this debate) or your neighbour - that stranger who is struggling to find a place to sleep.
